1. Strokes
I am going to be talking about strokes today.
The warning signs of a stroke and some
preventatives and the recovery. I Have used
my dad a lot as an example as he had a
severe stroke when I was growing up. Also
some of our residents have experienced
strokes so its quite good to have an
understanding of the subject.
2. Firstly I have shown some pictures of an examples of people who
are experiencing some kind of stroke and may not realise what is
happening to them. The faster you notice the symptoms the less
damaging the stroke will be on their long term health.
3.
. The first picture shows a man
with a drooping face This a
result of damage to the lower
part of the facial nerve. The
bleeding puts pressure on
the nearby tissue and nerves.
cells can be killed within
minutes
4. Muscle Weakness
The second picture shows
arm weakness .A stroke can
affect the way your muscles
work. Your brain sends
signals to your muscles,
through your nerves, to make
them move. A stroke can
damage your brain and affect
these signals.
5.
. The Third picture shows
speech problems. Slurred
speech and difficulty putting
words together are big stroke
indicators. My dad had very
slurred speech when waking
from unconsciousness and
really struggled to get his
words out and in the right
order.

6. Who is affected by stroke?
Each year around 120,000 people in the UK have a first stroke,
and about 30,000 have a recurrent stroke. Most cases occur in
people aged over 65. Each year about one in 100 people over
the age of 75 will have a stroke.
But a stroke can occur at any age – even in babies.
I am going to show you an interview of my dad which I recorded.
He tells us in a short story how to stroke affected him.
7. Types of Stroke
Ischemic stroke occurs as a result of an obstruction within a blood vessel supplying blood to the
brain. It accounts for 87 percent of all stroke cases.
8.
A hemorrhagic stroke is either a brain
aneurism burst or a weakened blood vessel
leak. Blood spills into or around the brain and
creates swelling and pressure, damaging cells
and tissue in the brain
9.
A transient ischemic attack (TIA), also called a
“mini stroke,” occurs when a blood clot blocks
blood flow in the brain. The block is temporary
(transient), and unlike an actual stroke, TIA
doesn't generally kill brain tissue.
10. What is a mini-stroke?
A mini-stroke is a set of symptoms similar to a stroke
but the person recovers within 24 hours. They also say
this can be a warning of another stroke.
Unlike a stroke, the symptoms of a TIA soon go.
When my dad experienced a TIA on his brain scan they
could still see the effects of the stroke from years ago.
11. Recovering after a stroke
The injury to the brain caused by a stroke can lead to
widespread and long-lasting problems.
Although some people may recover quite quickly, many
people who have a stroke will need long-term support to
help them manage any difficulties they have . My dad took
18 months to recover and 10 years later he still has some
mild side effects. I am going to show you a video showing a
person recovering after a stroke. It also shows her mobility
improving over time.
12. Preventing stroke
There are many ways we can help ourselves prevent a stroke in. 1-6
people will have a stroke in their lives so its good to take precautions
DIET plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (five portions a day) and whole
grains.
You should limit the amount of salt you eat
Stop smoking and avoiding inhaling other peoples smoke
Cut down on alcohol
Take a baby aspirin a study found that women over age 65 who take a
daily baby aspirin lower their stroke risk. Aspirin helps by preventing
blood clots from forming.
Keeping blood pressure low.
