Editor's Notes

  1. All kinds of neat medical peripherals to facilitate the appointment.
  2. A note about the figures on this slide: The percentages reflect clinical events from TSM only. It does not include other utilization (we are unable to apply Therapeutic Areas of Care classification to other utilization and therefore SF, TS, & WCs are never included in TAC reports or reports where LHIN/site specific data is included.)
  3. Mission: To develop and support telemedicine solutions that enhance access and quality of health care in Ontario, and inspire adoption by health care providers, organizations, and the public
  4. A catalyst for change, OTN is leading the transformation of Ontario’s “bricks and mortar” health care system to a virtual one, overcoming the barriers of time and geography to provide the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
  5. The Health Care Office will be used by Ontario’s primary care providers and specialists, as a single point of access to deliver effective patient care by videoconference – either room-based or through their PC/mobile device using a private and secure Internet connection. The Health care office will allow providers to leverage state-of-the-art technologies, such as store forward, to increase access to scarce healthcare resources, to connect with other providers and sites that use Telemedicine and to share information.
  6. The Telemedicine Directory (TM Directory), is the easiest way for OTN referrers, telemedicine coordinators and consultants to find the people and places using telemedicine.
  7. Moving the information, not the patient is the concept behind Otn.teledermSF. Store forward reducs wait times for patients so they can receive a same-day diagnosis and treatment plan without the need to see a dermatologist face-to-face.
  8. Another use of store forward technology, OTN is piloting a retinal screening program which provides routine biannual eye examinations to ensure diabetic retinopathy is detected and treated appropriately for Ontario patients living with diabetes, regardless of where they are located in the province.
  9. The move from room-based to personal computer videconferencing will start rolling out this year.
  10. The Acute Care channel enables rapid access to on-call expertise for trauma, emergency and critical care service across the province. It provides the primary, community, hospital and LTC settings with rapid remote access to urgent/emergent expertise to better manage care, closer to home.
  11. The Learning & Meeting Channel leverages OTN’s network to provide professional education opportunities to Members (organizations and individuals) or administrative events such as group and/or one-to- one meetings. As a result, health professional travel time and costs are reduced. More than 400,000 participants took part in telemedicine-enabled education in 2010/11.
  12. Education Events: 13,965
  13. The OTN Learning Centre offers an online and easy-to-use single point of access to thousands of health education events annually. Health care providers can search the learning opportunities by date, time, location, presenter, therapeutic area of care and sign up for personal learning alerts based on their area of interest.
  14. OTN hosted 1762 webcasts last year, for a total of 62,258 webcast views, a 17% increase over last year.
  15. New feature launched last fall, webconferencing offers a low-cost, feature-rich software conferencing solution designed for distance learning and meetings.
  16. Calculate your savings using the Webconferencing ROI calculator found on the OTN website.
  17. Chronic diseases are a major cause of disability and death, and very costly to the health care system. Nearly 80% of Ontarians aged 45+ have a chronic condition. Of those, approximately 70% suffer from two or more chronic conditions. Using technology to empower patients to self-manage their conditions, thereby reducing the need to go to the doctor or the emergency room – is the basis for this channel of care delivery.
  18. OTN managed a pilot study of THC and these were the results (prepared by Price Waterhouse Coopers). The success of the pilot has led to an expansion, which will begin rolling out this year in three LHINs (Central, NE and Toronto Central) and expand across the province with up to 30,000 patients enrolled by 2015.
