Novus Res developed 5 virtual reality training modules on foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) for the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment to complement existing emergency animal disease training. The VR modules allow users to perform FMD training tasks on a virtual farm and cover topics like biosecurity control points, disease investigations, sampling, and interviewing farmers. A pilot test of the VR modules within the Department aims to prove the concept and evaluate the user experience of VR as an efficient and scalable method for remote FMD training.

- Hello everyone, my name is Corrie Croton, a veterinarian at the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment in Canberra, Australia. I am making this presentation of behalf of Matthew Wilson, Luke Wilson, Nicholas Lyons, Sally Thomson, Nathan Mann as co-contributors to this project. The title of this presentation is: Virtual Reality Technology to Support FMD Training.
- VR is an emerging technology that conducts immersive training in realistic scenarios to occur from any location, whether it be in the office or at home. Research has shown that VR-based procedural task-based training can result in improved learning outcomes when compared to screen-based training (Accenture 2018; Allcoat 2018). Training is one of the strongest areas of growth in the Virtual Reality (VR) industry. For example, in 2017, Walmart purchased 17,000 Oculus Go headsets with the aim of training one million of its staff using VR (Incao 2018). American Airlines and Volkswagen have also implemented VR training programmes. VR hardware has developed rapidly over the past five years and now offers low-cost portable options. An example of this is the standalone headsets Oculus Quest. This means that headsets can now be distributed to train users on a large scale at a time and place of the trainees choosing. Therefore, VR is a scalable technology with potentially many more uses as the technology becomes more advanced over the next five years. For our project, a pilot VR experience was developed to determine how VR could be used to provide training for potential emergency animal disease incursions, specifically foot-and-mouth disease.
- Novus Res developed the VR application using the Unity game engine to operate on the Oculus Quest. The content was based on EuFMD training courses. The Quest was chosen because it is a standalone system with full head and hand tracking, making it ideal for training. Users walk around and use their hands to perform training tasks while on a virtual representation of a farm.
- The modules covered in the demonstration application include establishing biosecurity control points, examination of livestock, taking laboratory samples from livestock, and interviewing landowners. The pilot demonstration will be trialled from November 2020 with a group of users from within the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. Feedback on the demonstration will be collected. This feedback includes information on how effective the user felt the technology was in improving their knowledge of FMD, and possible improvements that could be made for future experiences. Feedback on the internal pilot will help guide the development of further VR training experiences, with the view to scale up adoption and implementation of VR as a training platform to support emergency animal disease preparedness. Additionally, a report is near publication that outlines, in more detail, the use of VR to support FMD preparedness training.
