This first study focuses on the personalized positioning of ads on content pages. It demonstrates a correlation between the level of attention that users devote to a content, and the position of the most noticeable graphic element on the side bar. In particular, we find that the graphic element most noticed by a user is roughly to the side of the point in the article where the user's attention waned. We argue that this finding lays the foundation for increasing display advertising effectiveness by tailoring ad positions on each article page impression to the user viewing it.
This document summarizes some useful tips for performing sentiment analysis. It discusses several factors to consider, including:
1) Using both lexicon-based and learning-based techniques, with lexicon-based providing higher precision but lower recall.
2) Considering statistical and syntactic techniques, with statistical techniques being more adaptable to other languages.
3) Training classifiers to detect neutral sentiments in addition to positive and negative, to avoid overfitting.
4) Selecting optimal tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, stemming/lemmatization, and feature selection algorithms for the given topic, language and domain. Feature selection methods like information gain can improve classification accuracy.
A brief description of the Opinion-Based Entity Ranking paper published in the Information Retrieval Journal, Volume 15, Number 2, 2012.
Slides By Kavita Ganesan.
The document discusses developing an opinion-driven decision support system (ODSS). It proposes that an ODSS should have four main components: 1) a comprehensive set of opinion data, 2) tools for analyzing and digesting opinions, 3) capabilities for searching for entities based on opinions, and 4) effective presentation of opinions to support decision making. Currently, most work focuses on opinion summarization and structured summaries. However, an ODSS requires addressing broader problems like enabling opinion-based search and developing different analysis tools to help users make decisions based on opinions.
This document discusses opinion mining and sentiment analysis. It begins with introductions to sentiment, opinion mining, and the motivation for opinion mining including analyzing large amounts of opinionated online text. It then discusses challenges in opinion mining including distinguishing subjects and targets. It describes classifying sentiment at the word, sentence and document levels. Applications mentioned include information extraction, product reviews, and tracking sentiments. The document provides an overview of key concepts in opinion mining and sentiment analysis.
This document discusses advances in image search and retrieval. It begins with an overview of visual information retrieval and its challenges, including the semantic gap between low-level visual features and high-level semantics. It then covers recent techniques like Google image search and similarity search. The document outlines core concepts like capturing similarity, large datasets, and user needs. It also revisits a 2000 paper on the challenges still facing the field, including the unsolved semantic gap and need for standardized evaluation benchmarks.
This document discusses planning a website by understanding user needs. It explains that user needs can be split into technical and content categories. Technical needs may include navigation, flow of information, loading times and accessibility. Content needs are specific to the target audience and purpose of the site. The document provides examples of content needs for websites for a new band or new game. It prompts defining the specific content and technical needs for a site based on the target audience and assessing what will make the site successful.

This document provides guidance on planning a survey for a website target audience. It discusses questioning methods, structuring questions, and creating a survey. The target audience is defined as young people aged 18-25. Key areas to categorize the audience are identified as age, gender, spending power, and interests/hobbies. Questions should be open or closed, avoid leading respondents, and build a natural sequence. As homework, students are asked to create a 10 question survey on SurveyMonkey covering gender, age, spending power, interests/hobbies and website specifics, and publish it to collect responses from the target audience.
Assessment and Process Automation of Two Success Factors for Websites: Usabil...Sonal Aggarwal
This document outlines a study on assessing and automating the assessment of two key factors of website success: usability and credibility. It discusses various usability testing methods and proposes using cognitive models to evaluate usability. An experiment is described that uses eye tracking to study how users process pictures on webpages at different stages. The results support the assumption that pictures are processed early in attention. The document also proposes developing a navigation support tool based on the CoLiDeS cognitive model to help users, and describes a validation experiment showing the tool reduces time, increases accuracy and lowers disorientation during navigation.
Online surveys can be used to evaluate the usability of a website. There are five main areas of a website that should be evaluated: content, design, navigation, page layout, and features. When designing a usability survey, questions should effectively and efficiently evaluate these areas and comply with them to reliably assess user responses. Various online tools are available to help with usability testing and analysis, such as CrazyEgg, Usabilla, and Google Analytics.

Iab edelman berland native advertising consumer research studySusan Borst
It is a maxim among sophisticated marketers that clicks are a relatively meaningless metric. What matters most is the degree to which consumer attitudes can be formed and reshaped by advertising and marketing communication and then translated into sustainable behavior that benefits marketers and their brands. IAB and Edelman Berland conducted the following study, "Getting Sponsored Content Right: The Consumer View," in order to understand how consumers perceive and feel about in-feed sponsored content. Do consumer attitudes differ by media vertical? Ultimately, the goal is to enable publishers, marketers, advertisers, and agencies to ensure that sponsored content meets consumer expectations and succeeds.
The research focuses on the news genre, specifically general news, business news and entertainment news..

iaetsd Co extracting opinion targets and opinion words from online reviews ba...Iaetsd Iaetsd
This document discusses a novel approach for opinion mining from online reviews based on a word alignment model. The approach regards identifying opinion relations as an alignment process, and then uses a graph-based co-ranking algorithm to estimate confidence for candidate relations. The word alignment model effectively reduces parsing errors compared to syntax-based methods, and the co-ranking algorithm decreases the probability of error propagation. Experimental results show the proposed model achieves better precision than traditional unsupervised alignment models in extracting opinion targets and words from reviews.
1) The document outlines a presentation plan for a lessons learned report on an app idea for sharing goals and arranging activities with peers.
2) User interviews found that people value friends' opinions but don't see them as helpful for achieving goals and don't need approval for their plans.
3) Feedback from potential clients and service providers was positive, seeing opportunities to match goal-oriented users with relevant services.
The usability test report summarizes tests conducted on the Ram Page website. Four participants were observed using eye tracking software as they freely navigated the website for 10 minutes. Both positive and negative feedback was gathered. Positively, pictures drew attention and functionality was good. Negatively, small font size made articles hard to read, event descriptions were confusing, and advertisements were ineffective and missed. The tests provided insights on improving reader engagement and navigation of the website.
The document outlines the 6 steps of the planning phase for an interactive multimedia development project:
1) Developing the concept by brainstorming project ideas and goals.
2) Stating the purpose by specifying goals and measurable objectives to direct the team.
3) Identifying the target audience and their demographics, needs, and preferences.
4) Determining the treatment by defining the tone, approach, metaphors, and emphasis of multimedia elements.
5) Developing specifications by detailing each screen's content, functionality, and user interface.
6) Creating a storyboard and navigation scheme to visualize how screens are linked through buttons and pathways.
The document provides guidance on creating effective online content, emphasizing the importance of understanding audiences, analyzing competition, planning sites both internally and for external users, testing usability, and analyzing user data to ensure content is reaching the intended targets. It also encourages questioning conventional approaches and integrating social media and community input into content development.

https://academy.yandex.ru/events/webmasters_school/yawebm2015/

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

ENGAGEMENT-BASED USER
ATTENTION DISTRIBUTION ON
WEB ARTICLE PAGES
Joint work with Nadav Golbandi, Ronny Lempel, and Limor Leibovich
5. - 5 -
Motivation
• Online display advertising is a multi-billion
dollar business
• Ads are often sold by impression in a model
known as CPI (cost-per-impression) or CPM
(cost-per-mille)
• Advertiser return of investment (ROI) depends
on how much attention is paid to their ads by
users
– Till now the surrogate to that was thought to
be ad location
6. - 6 -
• Varies widely
• Benway and Lane studied “Banner blindness”
– Showed that users didn't find specific information
that they were asked to and if it was embedded in a
banner
– Moreover, ads located higher on a page are missed
more often than ads located lower on the page
• On the other hand, in a different online advertising
scenario --- sponsored search --- the most effective
(and expensive) ad spots on a page are the top ones
• We argue that users are neither blind to display
advertisements nor consume it only before/after the
main content
Main content
Ads
Users’ attention distribution
7. - 7 -
Our scope
• Hypothesis:
– For a given user reading a specific article page, the
best ad location is to the side of the point in the story
where the user's interest tapers off
• Envisioned application:
– Many media sites employ recommender systems
and other machine learned algorithms that predict
users' tendencies to click on stories
– Those algorithms will be enhanced to also predict -
given a user„s click on a story - where the user's
attention will wane
– The highest-cost ad position will then be to the side
of the predicted point of waning attention
8. - 8 -
Measuring ads effectiveness
• Recognition: is the awareness of having
previously experienced the stimuli
– Simply asking the respondent if he/she has
seen a specific ad would qualify as a
recognition measure of exposure
• Recall: is the mental reproduction of some
target item experienced or learned earlier
– To qualify as a recall measure of exposure,
the consumer would need to accurately
describe some aspect of the ad

11. - 11 -
Images choice
• To measure recall in a valid manner, we used images that can
not be recognized easily by a superficial glance on the image
• Our images consisted of a photo of a famous person, whose
name should be familiar to most people but whose face is
much less known, along with a quote of the person with his
name at the end
• Only users who paid enough attention to the image and read
its text would be able to answer who was displayed in it
Instead of embedding ads in the
page, we used images as
surrogates.
We deemed it easier to control
recall aspects by using these
images.
12. - 12 -
Questionnaire page
• Contained questions on both the text and the images:
– Users were not told in advance the type of questions
they will be asked
– Furthermore, they were not able to return to the
article page once they started answering the
questions
• The purpose of the questions on the text is to allow a
confident estimation of the location in the text where the
user stopped reading the article
• The purpose of the questions on images is to measure
advertisements recall
13. - 13 -
Questionnaire page (cont.)
• The questionnaire contained 16 questions:
– 1 question on the overall level of interest they found
in the article
– 12 multiple choice questions, each with 6 possible
answers (one of them is “don't know”)
• 8 were on article‟s text (2 on every paragraph)
• 4 were on the images (1 recall question per image)
– 3 additional questions were to assess the
awareness of users
• E.g. “What was the main topic of the article”?
• Only users that answered correctly at least 2 of these 3
questions were included in the ensuing analysis
14. - 14 -
Classification of reading profiles
• The text shown to users was comprised of 4
paragraphs
• Users were asked 2 questions on every paragraph, and
their answers were coded as ternary response vectors
indicating the number of correct answers (0, 1 or 2) for
every paragraph
– Example: 0 2 1 0
Answered correctly both
questions of the second
paragraph
Answered correctly one
question of the third
paragraph
15. - 15 -
Classification of reading profiles (cont.)
• There are 81 possible response vectors
• Mapped into 5 reading profiles, indicating the number of
paragraphs read by the user -- ranging from 0 to 4
paragraphs
– Assumption: users read linearly (not necessarily
every sentence), from top to bottom
• Ideally, these 5 reading profiles correspond to the
response vectors 0000, 2000, 2200, 2220 and 2222
– In practice, only 21% of the response vectors
matched one of those 5 patterns
• We mapped the rest of the response vectors to one of
the 5 possible reading profiles based on probabilistic
considerations

Main result
• We report:
1. Correlation between workers‟ answers
about the level of their interest in the article
and the predicted reading profile (intuitive)
2. Correlation between the user's reading
profile and the recall measure on ad-
surrogate images (not intuitive)

Main result (cont.)
• 75% of the users were banner blind (consistent
with findings of Benway and Lane)
• We divided the 204 non-image blind worker
assignments into 3 reading profiles:
– very little reading (0-1 paragraphs)
– moderate reading (2-3 paragraphs)
– thorough reading (4 paragraphs)
• We next examined the average image recall
rate as a function of image position

Summary
• First step toward personalized placement of ads based
on attention considerations
• We argue that for a given user reading a specific article
page, the best ad location is to the side of the point in
the story where the user„s interest tapers off, which in
turn can be predicted from the expected user interest in
the content
• These findings lay the foundation for increasing display
advertising effectiveness by tailoring ad positions on
each article page impression to the user viewing it
Editor's Notes
