13. Chandipur is a peaceful sea side
resort where the sea recede and
proceed 5 km everyday.
Chandipur is 16 km away from
Balasore. Other places of tourist
interest around Balasore are
Remuna, Panchalingeswar,
Aradi and Chandaneswar.
On June 12, 2001, Defence
Scientists successfully flight-
tested the Supersonic Cruise
Missile BRAHMOS jointly
developed by India and Russia
from the Interim Test Range,
Chandipur, Orissa. With a 280
km range and Supersonic Cruise
capability, this missile is the first
of its kind in the world.

15. Odissi traces its origins to the ritual
dances performed in the temples of
ancient northern India. Today the
name Odissi refers to the dance style
of the state of Orissa in eastern India. l
The current form of Odissi is the
product of a 20th century revival.
The divine love tales of Radha and the
cowherd God Krishna are favourite
themes for interpretation, and a typical
recital of Odissi will contain at least
one or two ashtapadis (poem of eight
couplets) from Jayadeva's Gita
Govindam, which describes in
exquisite Sanskrit poetry the complex
relationship between Radha and her
Lord.

16. . The subject matter of Patta paintings is
limited to religious themes. The
Pattas are now used as stories of
Rama and Krishna are usually
depicted on the pattas. "Rasa Lila",
"Vastra Haran", "Kaliya Dalan" are
some of the recurring themes of
Patta art. Patta chitras of Lord
Jagannath, Balabhadra and
Subhadra, the Navagrahas and the
deities are also famous. In some
parts of Orissa, during marriage
ceremonies, Patta chitras of Durga
and Mahadeva are used. The present
generation of patta painters paint in
the style of the oleography on the
walls of big temple.

applique
work.
The village of Pipli is known for its exquisite appliqué
items and you may chanced upon rows of shops
exhibiting appliqué handbags, dress materials, cushion
covers, pillow covers, and umbrellas. This craft form in
Pipli was encouraged by the nobles of Orissa. The village
of Pipli was set up by the King of Puri who also engaged
many of these craftsmen in the famous Jagannath temple
of Puri

18. Perhaps the most popular item in
Orissan handicrafts iss the
handloom saree. The saressc come
in a variety of designs and colours
to suit every taste and pocket.
Generally the villagers in Sambalpur
district weave the sarees on looms
in the private or corporate sectors.
Sambalpuri cotton saris have a
smooth finish and have a distinctly
original border and pallu. Fish,
conch shell and flower motifs are
woven
