ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
FOR
EXCHANGE STUDENTS Autumn 2009
The Orientation Week is organised by Uppsala University (International Office) in cooperation with the
International Committee of the Nations of Uppsala and Uppsala Student Union. You are most welcome to
join in as many acitivities as you like.
Orienation Week begins on Monday 24th of August and finishes on Sunday 30th of August. During that week
you will find the International Officer from Uppsala Student Union and members of the International
Committee at Västgöta Nation (Västra Ågatan 18). They will be at your service, Monday to Friday
10.00-17.00, Saturday and Sunday 11.00-16.00. If you have any questions or just want some company
during your first days in Uppsala, drop by at Västgöta Nation – we are there to help you! You must sign up
for those acitivities you will take part in so that we know approximately how many people will come. You
can also pay for the activities (when required) at the reception at Västgöta Nation.
Most activities require student identification for Uppsala University. During the opening hours of the
reception you can collect a temporary student ID at Västgöta Nation free of charge. Remember to bring
the temporary student ID together with a personal identification (passport or other) every time you pay
a visit to a nation to show at the entrance. Please note that this card is only temporary and that the real student
identification card will be obtained when signing up for a specific nation later.

Practical tours
For approximately one hour, some of the nations’ international secretaries will guide you around Uppsala,
pointing out the important things to know. Both concerning student related offices and buildings, such as
nations and the Student Union, but also other places of interest, such as the post office, the closest bank
etc. We meet outside Västgöta Nation.
International Freshmen Reception
All the student nations and the Student Union, the Student Health Centre, some student organisations and
others will be at Norrlands Nation, Västra Ågatan 14, to inform you about their activities and
organisations. During a couple of hours you have the opportunity to ask questions, to eat candy, drink
lemonade and mingle. This is an important chance to get information on what you can engage in during
the semester and also to choose which nation to join. Note that which nation you join should be based on
your own preferences according to your interests, but you can almost always take part in the other nations'
activities as well.
Cultural activities
The International Committee will organize some cultural activities throughout the semester e.g. dinners
with different themes, language exchanges and pub nights. These activities will be announced on the
website of IC: www.kuratorskonventet.se
Nations and Uppsala Student Union
During the semester, your nation will offer you a vast program of different activities, such as singing in a
choir, theatre groups, working in the pub etc. All nations have international secretaries that you can
contact to get help to find which activity suits you. More info about specialities for different nations can
be found in the magazine, Beginners’ Guide, handed out during the Orientation Week.
The nations’ international secretaries are gathered in what is called the International Committee (IC).
The president of the IC is Edvard W Ă–stlund and the vice president is HĂĄkan Berg. Do not hesitate to
contact them with questions. One of the events of the committee is the International Gasque every
semester. This year, the gasque (which is a formal, three-course dinner accompanied by entertainment)
will take place at Västmanland-Dala Nation on Friday, October 16 th. Ticket can be bought at Västgöta
Nation during opening hours August 24-30.
It is compulsory to sign up at the Student Union and to pay a fee of SEK 140. If you do not want to join
an active nation (meaning not being able to enter any of the 13 nations), you can register at Uppsala
Student Union at Ă–vre Slottsgatan 7. Otherwise you sign up and pay at your nation and the fee for
general student services are included. Different nations charge differently but the differences are small.
Uppsala Student Union has services for all students, for example computers; possibilities to print and
people employed to help you with different questions. You are welcome to ask any questions to the
international officer, Karin Nordlund or she can help you find the right person to answer them.
