Analysis of the Four Season's Hotel and its business...
INTRODUCTION
Methodology of Report
The following report was derived from the primary use of secondary sources, in addition to
telephone contact with hotel representatives. Secondary sources included research from the Internet,
industry books, company marketing communications, trade and general business newspapers and
magazines, among others. Through all the sources, relevant data and information was extracted into
the report's appendices. After individual analysis and group discussion, the following report was
devised. The mandate of this report is to provide a macro examination of the luxury hotel industry
and specifically the future outlook of Four Seasons Hotel and Resorts, Inc.
Company History and Background
The vision for Four ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Growing at an annual rate of approximately 2–3%, the industry is divided into four tiers, consisting
of budget/economy, mid–scale, first–class and luxury. Though there are countless hotels around the
globe, the major players in the industry are the 10–12 parent companies that operate a chain of
hotels, often with brands that are spread across the four tiers. In addition to international players,
each tier also contains an abundance of smaller hotels that competes in its respective tier .
Within the luxury tier, many of the players do not actually own the hotels themselves, but instead
manage the operation of the business, similar to that of FSH. In the luxury segment, competition for
acquiring new management agreements becomes very high as hotel owners make their choices
based on the quality and value of a company's management service and most importantly, its brand
name. Moreover, guests who choose to stay in luxury hotels are commonly not very price sensitive,
and thus it is essential that a hotel distinguish itself amongst its competition by providing value
added services as well as maintaining an untarnished, reputable brand name and image.
To remain profitable, hotels must operate with around 65–70% capacity . Due to seasonality,
political and economic events, some hotels are finding it difficult to maintain profitable occupancy
levels and have started to provide services along multiple levels within the industry's

Modern Technology Impact
Due to advancement of technology world has become modern, everything has been changed rapidly.
Modern technology is drastically changing the world's living standards that result, people can
achieve everything easily. As we move into the twenty–first century, it is clear to see that we have
become more and more dependent on computers, such as computer are use every filed like School,
Office and Aeroplan. My strongly believed that technology has the biggest impact on the world.
To begin with, Internet and e–mail have changed the way people communicate with each other.
Internet gave many benefits. It is a good means of communication, a fast access to information. We
are communicate with each other, share their ideas, happiness and difficulties. We have a great
opportunity to find out more about countries and history of the world. The modern means of
transportation helps to people to move from one place to another very fast. A few years ago, it was
impossible to imagine waking up in one country and falling asleep in another, as a result of all
mentioned above the boundaries between countries, their traditions and customs are erased.
However, some of them are looking for a better place to live, others want to get new experience and
knowledge. Many families are created between people from different countries.
Probing further, almost every family has their own Television. It is fixed with satellite. Television
programs can be received anywhere in the world. Now people in every

Air Canada's Rewards Program
Air Canada says it is will launch its own rewards program in 2020 and cut ties with Aeroplan air
miles in a move that sent the airline's shares to a 10–year high.
The share price of Aeroplan owner Aimia Inc., meanwhile, plummeted by more than 50 per cent on
Thursday.
Aeroplan air miles will not be transferable to its new program, but Air Canada it will accept
Aeroplan points after June, 2020, "with pricing competitive with other third–party rewards
programs."
Air Canada said operating its own program will boost its financial performance while allowing it to
offer customers better value.
Air Canada launched Aeroplan in 1984, spun it off in 2002 and in 2008 severed financial ties with
the company.
Aimia said on Wednesday recent talks with Air Canada indicated the carrier would not renew the
agreement in 2020.

Johnston said.
Analysts said Air Canada's move has significant implications for Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce and Toronto–Dominion Bank, which offer co–branded Aeroplan credit cards.
"A big question most investors will have is if this announcement implies gradual erosion of a
significant cards portfolio for each bank over the next three years," said Gabriel Dechaine, a stock
analyst with National Bank Financial, predicting Air Canada's move will touch off a new round of
competition among the banks for credit card customers.
With Air Canada launching its own loyalty program, CIBC and TD Aeroplan customers appear
"poachable" by other banks, Mr. Dechaine said.
In a statement, TD said its Aeroplan credit card program will operate as usual, and it does not expect
a material change to its profit when the partnership expires in 2020.
But he said questions remain over transition costs and how Air Canada arrived at the 15–year, $2–
billion forecast for the program's net present

2.4. Fleet age: Air Canada has fleet of close to 400 Air crafts. It is very crucial for Air lines to
maintain the new version of air crafts in its fleet. Air Canada currently has fleet of 787 –Dreamliner,
and many long range latest A330, B777 flights to serve long range destinations. Air Canada also has
purchased latest Boeing 737 Max, the latest short haul flight from Boeing and has placed orders for
B787 ( latest generation of Long haul aircraft from Boeing). Maintaining the average age of fleet is
crucial for Airlines. Airlines use one of the few strategies to keep average fleet age competitive; Buy

The target of Air Canada is to be the most preferred airline for flyers across the world. This can be
achieved by providing the best flying experience to the customers through connectivity and
constantly improving customer service. Other airline carriers are also trying to catch up with Air
Canada on these parameters due to stiff competition. The market has evolved in such a way, that all
the players are trying to beat each other. This finally helps the customers as they have a wide variety
of options to choose from.
The indirect competitors of Air Canada are cruises and trains for longer and shorter distances
respectively. Cruises are known for their luxury and excellent travelling experiences. They are
indirectly competing with airline industry for the same customer base. Also, over shorter distances,
some customers prefer rail services over airlines due to being the cheaper mode of transport.
What competitive advantages and disadvantages do you & your competitors have, especially as they
relate to the service component?

The Importance Of Traveling
You worked really hard to get your miles and points in the bank. Don't let that potential vacation
currency go to waste. Here are some helpful tips to keep your miles from expiring.
Below the useful tips is a table with the major airline and hotel expiration deadlines.
Know The Expiration Dates
Each frequent flyer program has slightly different rules for when their miles expire. For some
international airlines, it can be up to 3 years. For most programs in the US, accounts expire after 18
months of inactivity.
This means that if you let your miles account sit for 18 months, and neither earn nor redeem a mile,
you will lose them all. And this seems to take people by surprise pretty frequently. Points Banking

But it makes sense to link your cards to a dining program, like Rewards Network. It's always a nice
surprise to get an email that you've earned miles after eating at a random cafe in a town you've never
been to before. This free option is worth signing up for.
Move points around
For the most part, you can't transfer points between airlines. You can also transfer points from Bank
Rewards credit cards to airlines.
If you have credit card points through American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate
Rewards, or Citi ThankYou cards, you can transfer those points to selected airline partners.
Members of the Starwood Preferred Guest program can transfer points to over a dozen different
airlines. That's the benefit of a flexible and transferable points programs.
In most cases you'll need to transfer a minimum of 1,000 points. Although Starwood Preferred
Guests Platinum members can transfer as little as one point to an airline program.
Some airlines also allow you to donate a handful of miles to charity, which can be a good option in a
pinch. You can also move miles between one person's account to another.
Keep in mind, some airlines charge a transfer fee this. Not the best option.
Buy Miles
When I was in a pinch a few years ago, I bought a 1,000 miles to keep the loyalty account active.
This was in my novice days when I was still learning. Although spending $15 to reset the clock
seemed like a good idea at the time, there are other

In the beginning of 2014 CEO Ed Clark retired and Bharat Masrani took over in the position. Since
Masrani took position there was an acquisition of CIBC's Aeroplan credit card accounts. TD bought
approximately 50% of CIBC's existing Aeroplan credit card portfolio totaling around 540,000
accounts. The outstanding balance on the accounts was $3.3 Billion with a fair value of $3.2 Billion
(PWC 2015, 33). They also disposed of capital markets, investment banking, and corporate banking
products and services. This includes underwriting and helping to distribute new debt or equity issues
to the public (TD 2014, 25). In 2014, in Canadian retail, the bank's revenue totaled to

TD Bank expectation for interest rate risk is to ensure that earnings are stable and predictable over
time (TD 2014, 86). The bank adopted a disciplined hedging approach to manage the net interest
income from assets and liabilities. The key aspects of this approach are as follows, "evaluating and
managing the impact of rising or falling interest rates on net interest income and economic value,
and developing strategies to manage overall sensitivity to rates across varying interest rate scenarios,
measuring the contribution of each TD product on a risk–adjusted, fully–hedged basis, including the
impact of financial options such as mortgage commitments that are granted to customers and,
developing and implementing strategies to stabilize net interest income from all retail banking
products (TD 2014, 86). "The bank becomes exposed to interest rate risk when their assets and
liability principal and interest cash flows have different interest payments or maturity dates" (TD
2014, 86). This is called mismatched positions
The bank uses derivatives such as wholesale, funding, other capital market alternatives, and product
pricing strategies to manage their interest rate risk (TD 2014, 87).
Variations in the interest rate risk changes the balance sheet significantly as assets and liabilities are
very sensitive towards these changes. (TD 2014, 154)

Air Canada 's Strategic Procurement Plan
Air Canada arranges a proactive strategic procurement plan to obtain different goods and services
that are vital and fundamental for company growth. These strategies are based on analysis of their
historical spending and on educated forecasting of requirements and opportunities. Air Canada is
able to create and improve important relationships with key strategical suppliers due to their
pronounced buying volume allowing them to acquire greater leverage. Air Canada mission is simple
and straightforward which is the connect Canada with the world. Naturally focusing on improving
their financial performance in order to increase productivity and its cost structure. To minimize fuel
emission and other greenhouse gases based on Air Canada's environmental concern. Their vision
consists in building loyalty through quality service and innovation. In order to maintain an effective
supply chain, Air Canada must evaluate suppliers by analysing qualifications and competencies.
These suppliers must demonstrate best practices, maintain a strong financial position, demonstrate a
respect for the environment and meet applicable legal, regulatory, safety, security and operational
requirements. These suppliers must share same vision and mission in achieving growth and
increasing product value. Establishing a win/win relationship to attain objectives and goals. PEST
analysis allows Air Canada to discover new technological advancements within suppliers such as
new products and IT systems. On the

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY REPORT
Although corporate social responsibility has no universal definition, it is understood to be the way
firms integrate social, environmental and economic concerns into their values, culture, decision

better practices within the firm, create wealth and improve society. (Industry Canada, 2011) This
report will represent the critical analysis of the current Corporate Social Responsibility practices of
Air Canada followed by recommendations for improvement.

Although it appears as if Air Canada is selflessly attempting to make the game of hockey a safer
sport, one may question if they are capable of making the rules of a professional sport which has
nothing to do with their core business. Many companies, in an attempt to save face in the public's
eye, have exercised their power to make decisions regarding matters that they have no knowledge or
expertise in. I believe Air Canada has an underlying motive of attempting to increase profitability by
appearing to society as an organization that does not tolerate or condone actions that are frowned
upon by society. Furthermore, Air Canada's headquarters are in Montreal which is the same location
of the aforementioned incident and may represent a conflict of interest.
Another pressing concern in the news headlines recently has been the unfair labour practice
complaint filed by Air Canada against the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) over the
collective bargaining negotiations

Regulatory Environment
Through the Ministry of Transport, the Government of Canada is wholly responsible for the
commercial air transportation that includes maintenance standards, policy, ground, operations
standards, and safety and navigation facilities. The Canadian Transportation Agency independently
acts as a quasi–judicial tribunal that resolves disputes that relate to the consumer and the business.
As an economic regulator, the agency also determines, licenses, permits and issue air transport
related authorities. NAV Canada, non–share Capital Corporation, is privately responsible for
provision of air navigation related services in Canada. The Canadian airport authorities, a not–for–
profit corporation, operate the major airports in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Together with its Contracted Carriers, Air Canada carries more passengers, provides more flights
and serves more non–stop destinations in the domestic market than any other airline. Its main
domestic competitor is WestJet which provided service to 38 domestic destinations in 2016,
compared to Air Canada's 64 destinations. Air Canada is also the largest U.S. trans–border market
provider of scheduled passenger services. The airliner, together with its contracted carriers, provided
than any other airline on 2016, a 45% market share proximate based on ASM. Air Canada, a broad
portfolio of international route rights, provides the largest of scheduled passenger services in the
international market to and from Canada, an estimated market share of 39% in 2016.
Investor Relations and Social Concern
Like any airline, Air Canada aims to be the best in the industry. Its objective is for the continuous
improvement of employee engagement and customer experience. In its pursuance for the global
champion status, Air Canada strategically identifies and implements reduction of cost and initiatives
for generating revenues and pursues growth opportunities that are internationally profitable (Air
Canada – The Official Website", 2017). It also leverages competitive advantages for appropriate
enhancement of margins, largely by increasing connecting traffic through new and existing
international gateways and effectively expanding and competing in the leisure market to and from

The Top 5 Frequent Flyer Programs for International Travel
Picking the right frequent flyer programs for your international travel depends on the region, the
distance (short–haul/long–haul), and your own objectives. Are you looking to get status? Or do you
favor cheap redemptions?
Start by assessing your travel patterns and booking habits (deep–discounted economy vs. full–fare
economy or business/first), and reviewing both the redemption side as well as earning ability of
potential programs. Some programs however generally stand out by their number of partners, ease
of achieving elite status, and overall value. Here's a rundown.
Alaska Airlines MileagePlan
MileagePlan is one of the best programs for international travel for both ... Show more content on

United and Delta charge a premium for award travel on partner airlines (on which you eventually
need to rely at some point for international travel).
American has had really poor saver award availability recently, especially for international premium
classes, which means British Airways is often the only transatlantic award option. And it comes with
a hefty carrier surcharge.
There is however one substantial downside to MileagePlan. Since Alaska isn't a member of any
airline alliance, you usually won't get any elite benefits with their partners.
Air Canada Aeroplan – Star Alliance
Aeroplan isn't as good as it used to be, but can still offer reasonably priced redemptions on excellent
carriers through the Star Alliance network – e.g. 55,000 miles without fuel surcharges from the US
to Europe on Swiss.
I would not call Aeroplan the best Star Alliance program overall, but it is a pretty good value for
most. Elite status however is not especially easy to reach given the spending requirement, but it is a
very useful program for redemption.
You can transfer both American Express Membership Rewards and SPG points to Aeroplan at a 1:1
ratio.
British Airways Executive Club – oneworld
Again, it depends on your travel patterns, but Executive Club is an exceedingly useful program for
specific flights. Availability is generally good, and status can be easy to achieve with some
discounted premium cabin travel – bearing in mind that it would definitely involve

Growing at an annual rate of approximately 2–3%, the industry is divided into four tiers, consisting of budget/economy, mid–scale, first–class and luxury. Though there are countless hotels around the globe, the major players in the industry are the 10–12 parent companies that operate a chain of hotels, often with brands that are spread across the four tiers. In addition to international players, each tier also contains an abundance of smaller hotels that competes in its respective tier . Within the luxury tier, many of the players do not actually own the hotels themselves, but instead manage the operation of the business, similar to that of FSH. In the luxury segment, competition for acquiring new management agreements becomes very high as hotel owners make their choices based on the quality and value of a company's management service and most importantly, its brand name. Moreover, guests who choose to stay in luxury hotels are commonly not very price sensitive, and thus it is essential that a hotel distinguish itself amongst its competition by providing value added services as well as maintaining an untarnished, reputable brand name and image. To remain profitable, hotels must operate with around 65–70% capacity . Due to seasonality, political and economic events, some hotels are finding it difficult to maintain profitable occupancy levels and have started to provide services along multiple levels within the industry's ... Analysts said Air Canada's move has significant implications for Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Toronto–Dominion Bank, which offer co–branded Aeroplan credit cards. "A big question most investors will have is if this announcement implies gradual erosion of a significant cards portfolio for each bank over the next three years," said Gabriel Dechaine, a stock analyst with National Bank Financial, predicting Air Canada's move will touch off a new round of competition among the banks for credit card customers. With Air Canada launching its own loyalty program, CIBC and TD Aeroplan customers appear "poachable" by other banks, Mr. Dechaine said. In a statement, TD said its Aeroplan credit card program will operate as usual, and it does not expect a material change to its profit when the partnership expires in 2020. Here are some helpful tips to keep your miles from expiring. Below the useful tips is a table with the major airline and hotel expiration deadlines. Know The Expiration Dates Each frequent flyer program has slightly different rules for when their miles expire. For some international airlines, it can be up to 3 years. For most programs in the US, accounts expire after 18 months of inactivity. Members of the Starwood Preferred Guest program can transfer points to over a dozen different airlines. That's the benefit of a flexible and transferable points programs. In most cases you'll need to transfer a minimum of 1,000 points. Although Starwood Preferred Guests Platinum members can transfer as little as one point to an airline program. Some airlines also allow you to donate a handful of miles to charity, which can be a good option in a pinch. You can also move miles between one person's account to another. Keep in mind, some airlines charge a transfer fee this. Not the best option.

Start by assessing your travel patterns and booking habits (deep–discounted economy vs. full–fare economy or business/first), and reviewing both the redemption side as well as earning ability of potential programs. United and Delta charge a premium for award travel on partner airlines (on which you eventually need to rely at some point for international travel). American has had really poor saver award availability recently, especially for international premium classes, which means British Airways is often the only transatlantic award option. And it comes with a hefty carrier surcharge. There is however one substantial downside to MileagePlan. Since Alaska isn't a member of any airline alliance, you usually won't get any elite benefits with their partners. Air Canada Aeroplan – Star Alliance Aeroplan isn't as good as it used to be, but can still offer reasonably priced redemptions on excellent carriers through the Star Alliance network – e.g. 55,000 miles without fuel surcharges from the US to Europe on Swiss. I would not call Aeroplan the best Star Alliance program overall, but it is a pretty good value for most. Elite status however is not especially easy to reach given the spending requirement, but it is a very useful program for redemption.
