Greetings,
In August of 2018, over tea and cake in her airy kitchen in Dun Laoghaire, Betty Ann and I talked
about the contents of her home ‘Belcamp’ after her day. She told me of her desire of leaving a
legacy to her speech and drama school. I met Betty Ann several times in her later life, she had
not changed a bit, the same regal stance and trained voice with perfect diction and elocution, just
as I remembered when I was her pupil in Harcourt St. forty-five years earlier. I explained my
gratitude to her and the late Michael for the confidence and poise that their combined teaching
had given me, skills which I have used regularly for rostrum-selling, public speaking and previously
amateur dramatics with the Rathmichael players.
I shared with her my dear mother’s determination in getting me to drama class on time. Not
exactly an easy task in the late 1970’s prior to N11 and M50 motorways. Our journey in my
mother’s Fiat seemed to take an age as we travelled through, rather than by-pass Bray, Shankill,
Cabinteely and Stillorgan from Delgany in County Wicklow. Betty Ann laughed and said that my
mother’s endeavors had paid off.
I noticed on that occasion, the large Amethyst Ring (lot 60) which had caught my eye years earlier
and recalled very vividly Michael’s Grecian gold ring (lot 46) when she showed me her jewellery
collection. It never ceases to amaze me how one can remember those minute details decades
apart. My final meeting with Betty Ann was like the first, it was a joy to be around someone with
such enthusiasm for life and its progress.
The assembly of this sale has been a great pleasure and an honor and has given me a deep sense
of nostalgia for my time at Betty Ann’s school.
I would like to thank her brother Jim and his wife Mary for all their help and assistance, together
with our own team here at O’Reilly’s especially Ethna and Hannah who have worked extremely
hard to bring this sale to the market. I do hope that you enjoy the collection and wish you well
at the auction. I would also like to wish continued success to the school in the future.
Yours Sincerely,
M.D Bernon
Chairman, O’Reilly’s Auction Rooms

Betty Ann was a widely loved and well-known speech
and drama teacher from Dublin. With great energy and
passion, she committed much of her life to teaching
generations of Irish actors, authors, producers,
filmmakers, and others alike, many of whom went on
to be very successful.
Betty Ann grew up on Ruben Avenue, just
off South Circular Road, where she lived
with her parents Frances and Eugene Norton
and her brother Jim Norton. Music, theatre
and the arts were of great importance to
the Norton family, Frances played the violin
and Eugene was a singer. They sent their chil-
dren to drama classes and music lessons and
nurtured their creativity. Jim went on to be-
come a successful actor while Betty Ann
found her calling as a teacher.
She completed her speech and drama diplomas
in the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama in Lon-
don and was ambitious to continue a career
teaching. In 1959 she opened her own drama
school,The Betty Ann NortonTheatre School
and Agency and her
ambitions were met
with success.
In 1965 Betty Ann
took a trip to the
idyllic west of Ire-
land.She was cycling
along a small both-
areen on the Aran
Islands when sud-
denly she lost con-
trol on the uneven
surface. Meanwhile, a man was setting up his
tripod and camera to capture a shot of the
undulating mountains ahead (the winding
path in the foreground made for a lovely
composition). Ready to take the picture he
noticed something coming in to view, it was
Betty Ann on her bicycle, she crashed straight
in to him and they both ended up in a heap
in the ditch. The man was Michael J Cunneen,
from Limerick.
Michael and Betty Ann were married in 1967
and that same year they bought a splendid
Georgian house in Dun Laoghaire called‘Bel-
camp’. Michael had a background in stage
design and drama and together they co-di-

rected the School.Their contribution to the
community of the arts in Dublin went above
and beyond. Generations of students came
through the doors of 57 and 27 Harcourt
Street and subsequently in St Louis secondary
school (when they moved location in 2006).
The Betty Ann Norton Theatre School and
Agency has seen some wonderful Irish talent
pass through its doors, with many students
going on to achieve fame and great success
in their field;Claudia Carroll (actor and writer),
Jim Culleton (Director) Moya Doherty (co-
founder of Riverdance),Amy Huberman (ac-
tor/writer),Vincent Lambe (Filmmaker), Hugh
O’Conor (actor) and Áine Lawlor (Broad-
caster) are just some of the well-known Irish
figures to have attended Betty Ann’s School.
The Betty Ann Norton School and Agency
continues the legacy of its founder with
former student, Ciara Feely as its director.
Ciara’s commitment to teach as passionately
as her mentor Betty Ann is shared amongst
staff members Grace Halton, Dan O’Farrell,
Evie O’Brien, Vanessa Schaefer, Charlotte
O’Reilly among others and they are doing a
fantastic job maintaining the schools highly
regarded reputation.
Betty Ann is survived by her brother Jim
Norton,sister-in-law Mary Larkin,her extended
family and of course the students both past
and present of her theatre school. Her beloved
husband Michael predeceased her in 2017.
Betty Ann’s lessons in speech and drama are
treasured by all who experienced them, and
she is fondly remembered today throughout
many households for the impact she had on
so many lives.
President Michael D Higgins spoke very highly
of this impact when he said that “Betty Ann
Norton gave six decades, with great generosity,
to the world of theatre, the world of the
spirit and performance, a world we must not
lose.”, and he urged us to consider the im-
portance of her legacy stating “The best
tribute to her memory is to support artists
in their campaign to live, and continue at this
difficult time for our theatres, our cultural
spaces and all those who work within them,”.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
The school hopes to use the funds to acquire
a property that will have rehearsal rooms, a
performance studio and co-working space
to be used by the school, it’s graduates and
professional theatre makers as a creative hub.
They aim to create a small, specialised library
to house the wonderful teaching and perfor-
mance archival material that Betty Ann and
her late husband Michael J.Cunneen collected
over the last 60 years. This space will host
school activities and support professional
artists in a city where arts spaces are becoming
increasingly rare.
In addition, the school hopes to expand their
scholarship programme and become involved
in more community-based activities.With the
easing of restrictions, they are looking forward
to producing innovative and exciting live per-
formances such as previous promenade plays
held in OPW venues like Dublin Castle,
Farmleigh House, Rathfarnham Castle and
the Pearse Museum.

Today, we often forget about the importance
of confidence and the power it has to trans-
form our lives, but Betty Ann never misun-
derstood this, she had confidence in abundance,
and she knew how to tap into it.
Almost all who attended her school will
speak of how her lessons changed them,
how still today when they are going for an
interview, or speaking in public, they will hear
Betty Ann’s voice in their head, reminding
them to keep their posture straight and com-
pose themselves, to speak with good diction
and be well mannered. She had a natural
flare for teaching, and she embraced it to the
fullest. Aware of her talents and sure of her
path in life as an educator she is a woman to
be highly admired for her life achievements.
MEMORIES OF BETTY ANN
Ciara (current director, tutor, and former
student of Betty Ann NortonTheatre School)
I was lucky enough to have Betty Ann in my
life for 15 years. Some of my most distinct
memories from adolescence are of Betty
Ann, drama classes and long rehearsals. I re-
member clearly one of my first solo pieces
and her praising me for my use of stage in
the piece and feeling so proud. What I loved
about being a student with Betty Ann was
she really taught the skills you would need to
apply to any performance. We learnt so much
from the bits of constructive criticism or
praise she would provide to each of us as
they were so specific.
After years of observing her teaching style,
now when I am teaching students myself I
can hear her voice with the exact guidance
she would provide in different situations. In
particular some notable Betty Ann phrases
that regularly come into my mind in her
exact inflection are "backs to the audience",
"you're corpsing" and "did ye all fall down a
hole?" As I grew older I was lucky to get to
spend more time with Betty Ann enjoying
Betty Ann Getting her students ready for stage

strawberries and cream at her garden parties,
being treated to afternoon tea in the Merrion
and theatre trips all around Dublin.
Claudia Carroll (author, actor and former
student of Betty Ann’s)
“No one who ever met Betty Ann could
ever really forget her. That voice, so crisp and
annunciated, her calling card.The old-school
glamour;the way she was always so impeccably
dressed, literally dripping with expensive
jewelry. You never saw her without a full face
of make-up - never. Then there was her drive,
her focus, her absolute passion for theater
and drama and acting and the spoken word.
The word ‘legend’ gets bantered around so
much, but I can think of no better way to de-
scribe the life force Betty Ann really was.
You lived for Drama class on a Friday night.
Me,Deirdre Kinahan,Karen Ardiff,Jim Culleton,
Aidan McArdle and so many other classmates.
It wasn’t all fun and messing and improvs;
Betty Ann could be tough on you and God
help you if you turned up to class without
knowing your poem for the Feis or your
theory for your Guildhall exams. She demanded
the same standard of perfectionism from a
nine year old as she would from a grown
adult working at the Abbey or Gate. We
were half terrified of her as kids - it was only
as an adult you came to appreciate the
passion that she brought to everything. If she
was hard on you, it was only because she
really, really cared.
It’s an honour to write the forward for
O’Reilly’s and for the upcoming auction. Betty
Ann’s theatre school was a life’s work for her
and for her equally wonderful, gifted husband,
Michael. I’m rock solid certain that auctioning
so many of her exquisite things as a fundraiser
would be exactly what they'd both have
wished for. And so I’m wishing O’Reilly’s the
greatest success imaginable with the sale.
Betty Ann would expect no less. Warmest
wishes, Claudia Carrol”
Grace (current tutor, former student)
I distinctly remember my first class in the
theatre school. I was a shy child and my
mother sent me to drama classes with Betty
Ann to build my confidence and most im-
portantly to help me speak clearly.
Being the new child, I was told to stand up
and introduce myself to the class. Betty Ann
asked me my name, my age, and what kind of
person I was. I was terrified! All the other
children knew each other and seemed to
burst with confidence! Aged 8, and not
knowing what kind of person I was, I said 'a
normal one' hoping that would be an ac-
ceptable answer. Betty Ann was quick to
correct me and let me know "there's no
such thing as a 'normal' person" and encour-
aged me to be specific. I cobbled together
something about being sporty that seemed
to satisfy her and allowed me to shrink back
into my seat.
Throughout my years as a student Betty Ann
11. 9
always pushed me to have an opinion and
think more critically.Once she got me speaking,
I never stopped. As my confidence grew, I
enjoyed debating with her on drama selections
for exams and staging choices during theatre
trips, but I will always remember that first in-
teraction and I'm glad to say I've never con-
sidered myself 'normal' since.
Evie (current tutor, former student)
From the moment I met Betty Ann at 9
years old she inspired me, she had a spirit
and aura unlike anyone I’ve ever met and to
this day she plays a major driving force and
encouragement in my professional and per-
sonal life. I can honestly say I wouldn’t be the
person I am today without her.
The 10 years in which I knew Betty Ann are
filled with endless fond and meaningful mem-
ories. From Shakespearen tea parties to
female empowerment speeches following
boy problem breakdowns, you never left a
class without a story to tell. A particularly
fond memory I have is of a simpler moment;
we were running extra rehearsals ofThe Im-
portance of Being Ernest in the Presbyterian
Church on York Road and on our break,
Betty Ann brought us into the kitchen to
make tea and enjoy a Caviston’s sponge cake.
Though only a small thing, something about
the memory really sticks out in my mind,
maybe it was her jokes about me spilling my
cup of tea, or her calm yet playful energy that
contrasted with the high stakes of the re-
hearsals and the cold weather outside.What-
ever it is it’s a moment I hold dear and en-
capsulates so much of my experience in the
theatre school into a half an hour snapshot.
