  4. 4. 2 Welcome WELCOME www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Welcome to Experience Osterville 2016! This year, we’ve got even more events, organizations, and businesses to tell you about. You may be reading this in our printed form (available everywhere, but the Library always has extras if you need more for guests!), or as our digital version at ExperienceOsterville.com. Osterville offers great activities and resources for kids of all ages, and this year’s guide is chock-full of ideas to keep your little ones busy. This will be my last time writing the welcome. This June, I will be turning the reins over to a new president of the board. It’s been such a privilege to serve the library and the community. We’ve made great strides not only by opening the beautiful new building, but in developing leadership, staff and a board who can work together to make our village library the best it can be. I’m grateful for all the support I’ve had, and proud of all our accomplishments, including this Guide. Now in its fourth year, thanks to our advertisers, the Guide has raised more than $65,000 to support the library. Be sure to make the library a regular stop when you’re in the village. We’ll be celebrating the arrival of summer with our expanded and enhanced Village Clambake under the tent on the Library green on Sunday, June 26. The clambake kicks off a full week of summer activities, as well as ticket sales for our big fundraiser, the annual Car Raffle. Take a look on page 44 in the calendar section to check out the great set of wheels we’ll be raffling off this summer. For the past couple years, the winning number has been one sold early, so don’t procrastinate! Also, reserve your spot early for the 40th annual OVL golf tournament on Saturday, May 27. We’ll have a great day of golf followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner overlooking the water at the Wianno Club. To keep up with the latest Osterville has to offer, like us on Facebook, and visit ExperienceOsterville.com and OstervilleVillageLibrary.org. About Osterville Village Library OVL is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit corporation that offers both residents and visitors alike free access to educational and informational materials and programs including books, publications, DVDs, CDs, concerts, classes, seminars and exhibitions. We also offer meeting space for community organizations and private functions. We are primarily financed by you, our patrons. 5. 5. 5 POLITICALPAST Perhaps you’ve seen a motorcade or two going through Osterville with the Clintons, the Bushes, or the Romneys. But maybe you didn’t know that Osterville’s political past has deeper roots… In 1840, William Henry Harrison became the 9th president of the United States, and a young girl living in the village of Osterville took notice. Sarah Boult always had a penchant for politics. For the first time, the Whig party took control of the Presidency and Harrison’s “log cabin” campaign emphasized that, “he was one of the people.” Sarah Boult studied in Boston and returned to her native Osterville in 1906, first as Wianno’s summer postmistress and later in a position at the Hyannis Trust Company. She continued her zest for politics – and her collection of political memorabilia, including a rare Harrison jubilee silk ribbon citing, “One fire more and the day is ours.” That ribbon is now in the permanent collection of the Osterville Historical Museum – of which she was a charter member. Boult might have also been inspired by native son Zeno Scudder (1807-1857). Scudder held the highest political office of anyone from Osterville – past or present. Scudder for President? Scudder, born and raised in the village, was also a member of the Whig party and had dreams of setting sail as a ship captain, but his health deterred him. He took up law and served in the Massachusetts state legislature from 1846-1848. He held the title of senate president and his special interest – American fisheries – was familiar ground for this man born by the sea. Zeno then rose to become a U.S. Congressman representing the Massachusetts 1st and 10th districts. He had hopes of higher office and would have perhaps been Osterville’s first U.S. Presidential candidate. But his health failed, and he was forced to resign in 1854 and returned home to Osterville where he died in 1857. A Return to Camelot – Osterville Style Today, many have memories of Camelot – right here in Osterville. cont’d www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Tippecanoe & Osterville, Too! Campaign headquarters for William Henry Harrison in Philadelphia, 1840. Osterville’s native son Zeno Scudder held the highest political office in Osterville’s history. A monument that pays tribute to his service to the country is located at Hillside Cemetery.
  6. 6. President John F. Kennedy and his family would often travel by boat from Hyannisport to Sampson’s Island. They would anchor and enjoy the solitude. The Secret Service was often seen on the beach with their wing-tipped shoes – a clue that a certain VIP was ashore again. The Marlin was the boat of choice for these excursions. It was originally commissioned by Edsel Ford and featured a rumrunner hull. In 1952, the Kennedys purchased the boat. It was used for cabinet meetings, and in fact, Kennedy learned of the Berlin Wall being built while aboard. The Kennedy connection to Osterville and the Crosby family was well established. Having built Victura, JFK’s wooden Wianno Senior, the Crosbys were already known for their nautical craftsmanship. Victura, now housed at the JFK Library in Boston, still returns to Osterville every winter for care. Jackie Kennedy was a good friend of Mrs. Paul “Bunny” Mellon. The two would often spend afternoons at the Mellon’s Oyster Harbors estate, enjoying the ocean breezes or even sharing a loved pastime – painting. And then there were the horses. Caroline Kennedy and her cousins Maria Shriver, Sydney Lawford, and others, rode horses on the land behind the Osterville Elementary School on Bumps River Road. The stables were located where the Osterville Physical Therapy practice is now. Seeing the horses promenade down Pond Street was commonplace. Osterville has been providing a respite for political leaders and their families for centuries. Keep an eye out for the next motorcade to come through. In an election year, one never knows who we might see. – Jennifer Williams 6 POLITICALPAST President John F. Kennedy aboard the Marlin returning to Hyannisport from an excursion to Osterville. 11. 11. 13 JENWILLIAMS www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Jennifer Morgan Williams Jennifer Morgan Williams was destined to bring the Osterville Historical Museum into the 21st century. Her love of her Cape Cod heritage is matched only by her commitment to future generations to know and appreciate theirs. She learned to swim in the salt seas of Nantucket Sound, had her first date with her husband on Osterville’s shores, and is now raising her four children in the historic Osterville home once owned by her in-laws. It is impossible not to be swept up by the enthusiasm of this articulate museum director with a passion for all things Osterville. Her love of Cape history was evident at an early age when she collected the vintage postcards that make up a significant portion of the recently published Osterville Postcard History Series book – available in the museum gift shop. After majoring in English at Wellesley College, she honed communication and technology skills, earning a Masters degree in Journalism from UMass Dartmouth. The marriage of her passion for history with her facility for technology proved a winning formula when working for the communications depart- ments at Brandeis & Boston University. It also made her the perfect candidate to transform Osterville’s staid museum into an interactive, hands-on headquarters for kids and families. From the touch-screen exhibit describing the museum’s beloved outdoor boat collection to the World War II uniforms and letters of Osterville soldiers, the museum captures the imagination of visitors of all ages and nationalities. As Jen says, “If you haven’t seen us lately, you haven’t seen us at all!” The user-friendly changes are evident at first glance. Not only have the shutters of the 19th-century sea captain’s home been replaced and the walkway made more inviting, but with the help of the Osterville Historical Museum’s board, a quaint picket fence and flowers have been reinstated. The boat shop houses an impressive collection of historic boats, including one built by ninth-generation boat builder, Ned Crosby. Community outreach efforts have resulted in the successful Friday Farmers’ Market which Williams calls “a gift to Osterville.” The Farmers’ Market supports local Farmers’ and vendors while allowing townspeople and visitors to enjoy the lovely grounds of Osterville Young Leaders: Jennifer Morgan Williams Bringing Osterville History into the 21st Century cont’d
  12. 12. the museum. Jen is committed to caring for and sharing the valuable, centrally located outdoor spaces properly. In addition to the annual sold out “Pigs and Pearls” dinner with jazz and auction under a tent, and the children’s Pirates and Mermaids party, the museum hosts several weddings each year. Williams explains, “This is not our main purpose, but it is lovely for members of local families who grew up here to walk to the museum, past their parents’ houses from the local church.“ Wedding parties are treated to a sailors’ valentine station where the youngest members create keepsakes for the bride and groom. Williams sees her role as well as the role of the museum as “creating archives for the next 100 years.” To that end, she must juggle what she calls the three “r’s” of museum management: resources, relationships, and relevance. So far, her love of all things Osterville is keeping all three in perfect balance. – Sara Hoagland Hunter JENWILLIAMS 14

If your timing is right, catch a cuddle or read to Caz, the resident therapy dog. 11 AM Beat the lunch crowd at Fancy’s Market and order the California sandwich to bring to the beach. Not ready for lunch? Get snacks and cold drinks at Cumberland Farms, which has the Chill Zone flavored ice machine. If it’s Friday, bike to the Farmers’ Market at the Osterville Historical Society for food, fun, and treats. Check out the World War II exhibit, the doll collection, and the antique boats. Noon – 4 PM Afternoons are for picnics and swimming. Dowses Beach boasts beautiful views, soft sand, and the warmest salt- water swimming on the Cape. When the Sound side is windy, the Bay side offers crabbing and wading in view of the many boats anchored in picturesque East Bay. For freshwater swimming, head to Joshua’s Pond, which is supervised by lifeguards and surrounded by hiking trails. Nearby Micah Pond is the secret destination of daring locals who swing from the lengthy rope swing. Beach stickers are required for parking at all town beaches. 4 PM Watch the yachts dock at Crosby Boat Yard. Listen for the three blasts as taller boats call for the green drawbridge to open. The Islander restaurant has a comfortable porch for viewing and great appetizers to snack on. 5 PM Before dinner, bike, walk, or drive by the ocean front homes of scenic Sea View Avenue until the road ends at the Osterville cut. It’s the perfect place to watch the boats come in, view the mansions of Oyster Harbors, and admire Sampson’s Island sanctuary, a favorite family picnic spot. 6 PM Your toughest decision of the day may be dinner. For takeout, Osterville Fish Market offers bulging, fresh lobster rolls and delicious fish and chips. Next door, Pizza 1 Subs 2 sells classic, gooey thick crust pizzas. On Main Street, Crisp is the place to go for thin crust pizza with table tennis, cornhole, and a fire pit while you wait. For the young gourmet, Five Bays Bistro is the most sophisticated restaurant in town. See more ideas on page 23. – Sara Hoagland Hunter Jordan Bullock agrees with most kids that it’s being with family and friends that makes Osterville so special. And says, “When I think of Osterville in the summer I think of families on vacation, enjoying relaxing times at the beach or just walking around town.”
  18. 18. KIDSSHOPPING 20 Shopping! When you’ve had enough of salt, sand, and sun, the many shops of Osterville’s Main Street are ready for you. Here are just a few to get you started: Osterville House and Garden owner James Coté will help you find the most popular summer beach toys and games: the Waboba ball which skips and bounces on water, Frisbees, Kadima paddles & ball, and kites. Gift shops next door tempt with soaps, signs, and souvenirs. Oyster Island Emporium sells colorful flip-flops, bright Vera Bradley bags, Cape Cod themed jewelry, and sweet-smelling soaps. With a Twist is full of fresh, fun and affordable jewelry, accessories and gifts. Coastal Style sells a patriotic, red, white, and blue Nerf bat and ball, a cute container for flip-flops, and a seashell nightlight. Young fashionistas like In the Pink with its classic lily shifts and new line of comfy shorts in beautiful pastels, as well as Details and Goods with its range of colors and styles. Island Outfitters is full of nautical looking sweaters, jackets, bracelets, and shoes. For the younger crowd, and anyone looking for adorable baby presents, picture books, toys and snappy backpacks, Pocket Full of Posies is the place. Owner Jenn Wass has created an inviting play area for the little ones waiting while their parents get their beach towels and robes to be monogrammed on site. Books by the Sea sells wonderful children’s books – many signed by local authors, cards, and guides to Cape birds, shells and night skies. Pick up a sailor’s friendship rope bracelet as a souvenir of your stay. Corner Cycle has the latest bikes, from kick bikes with “no pedals” for the youngest bikers to mountain bikes, and flashy colored cruisers in tangerine, violet, or polar blue.

Ten-year-old Annie Cronin says, “There’s something for everyone.” The special Kids Menu features everything from hot dogs to fresh scrod & veggies and includes dessert. Try the melt-in-your-mouth warm lava cake! Dine before 5:30 and enjoy early bird prices. The adjoining take- out market features fresh seafood, hot chowder, and the restaurant’s most popular items. Crisp Flatbread In just two seasons, Crisp has become the go-to family gathering spot. Not only are thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas and pasta available with a variety of yummy, farm-fresh ingredients but outdoor “while you wait” activities feature table tennis, two fire pits, and the ever popular cornhole. Indoor and outdoor tables as well as takeout are available. Liz Kass, mother of three-year-old Coco and five-year-old Barrett praises the fresh salads and the chance for parents to relax by the fire pit while kids play cornhole with friends. Our personal favorite is the s’more making kit, always fully stocked by the fire pit. AMIE Bakery The goodies in the glass cases at AMIE’s would make anyone’s mouth water. From chocolate- dipped and kitty-cat-shaped shortbread cookies to beautiful buttercream flower-topped cupcakes, owner Amie Smith and her on-site bakers do not disappoint. Our favorites are the sugar cookies decorated with sunbathing gummy bears on frosting towels. Chocolate along with peanut butter cup flavored gelato runs a close second. Amie’s mission is mentoring and her private birthday baking parties and cookie/cupcake decorating classes for kids are gaining popularity. cont’d 23 KIDSEATS www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org

Breakfast sandwiches are served all day. Frothy smoothies abound in all flavors. Gone Chocolate When we asked kids to share their favorite Osterville food memory, Gone Chocolate ice cream was at the top of the list. According to our smiling scooper, Fabiola, the most popular flavor for kids is bright, blue Cookie Monster, made from a cookie dough vanilla base. ‘Tweens and teens go for frappes at Gone Chocolate – most often Oreo or mocha chip. All ages love rainbow or chocolate sprinkles and M&Ms on their cones and dishes, although the cotton candy and bubblegum flavors have the goodies mixed right in. 23. 23. 27 PAULCHESBRO www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Paul Chesbro’s roots are firmly planted in Osterville. He remembers Charles Jones and Albert “Allie” Colman driving their horse-drawn wagons in Osterville Center when he was a boy in the early 1940s. Just a few years later, Studebaker cars were parked along the side of the street – a subtle indicator that times were changing. But what had come before? What was it like when his ancestors walked the streets of Osterville? Who were their neighbors? What was their life like way back when? Mr. Chesbro has spent his life in the service of carefully documenting Osterville’s history (without a computer) by poring through records, old photographs, grave rubbings, letters, and newspaper articles from the past. His creative skills, together with a historical detective’s ability to piece together the past have resulted in a series of books with jaw- dropping photographs that make a richly rewarding read. Ironically, it was a trip to Arizona that fueled Paul’s burgeoning passion for learning about his own ancestry and Osterville history. On a tour to the Grand Canyon while visiting a great aunt in Phoenix, he met a woman from Bristol, Rhode Island whose son-in-law was Nelson Blount, the owner of Edaville Railroad in Carver back in the 1950s. Paul had heard his mother mention the name. When he returned home, he learned from his great-aunt, Emily (Crocker) Hallett, that his great-great-grandmother was a Blount. Paul Chesbro Digging into Osterville’s Past cont’d Paul Chesbro at his table in front of the Village Barber Shop, Main St. Osterville
  24. 24. About that time his mother became president of the Osterville Historical Society. Paul started displaying old photos from the museum’s archives in the window of a local bank. When he started writing about village history for the Village Advertiser, the local weekly newspaper, people started to clean out their attics and send him records and photos. He spent hours at the Sturgis Library researching the Barnstable Patriot archives from the 1830s and writing down anything he read about Osterville. He wrote to countless town offices and libraries for records and information to complete the research. A big find came when a house in the village containing all the old town records from 1696 to the Civil War was moved, and the records were given to him. Another monumental discovery was an extremely long letter written by Augusta (Lovell) Rich in 1877 that detailed the lives and locations of the families and their homes in the village. In one of his books, Paul assigned a number to each person mentioned in the letter and then provided related photos, poems, grave rubbings, records, and news items related to that person. Lazarus Lovell (1700-1777) prayed for a church in the village. Paul learned of Mr. Lovell’s wishes in a poem that he received when he was tracking down another Osterville descendant by contacting the office at Mt. Auburn cemetery in Cambridge. Mr. Lovell’s prayers were answered. Paul learned that the Baptist church in the center of the village was built over the foundation of Mr. Lovell’s house. Paul actually got to see the original Lovell homestead foundation when they were adding onto the church. Paul has spent thousands of dollars over the years to research and publish his brilliant books, which are an important part of the collection of local references available in the Osterville Village Library’s Cape Cod Room. If you’re here in the summer, look for Paul at a table in front of the barbershop on Saturday mornings, where he has three separate volumes available to purchase. And don’t be afraid to sit and chat for a while. You’re sure to learn something new about Osterville, and he might even introduce you to the descendants of people featured in your new book as they stroll by. – Diane Spencer

  30. 30. 35 VILLAGETECHNOLOGY www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Osterville and the other small villages of Cape Cod offer a respite from a hectic and homogenized America of strip malls and box stores that increasingly reflects the adage – everywhere is anywhere, and anywhere is everywhere. Polls indicate many Americans, particularly millennials, prefer to live in walkable areas with bike access to work, shopping, and leisure activities. Simultaneously, technology is creating the opportunity for businesses and workers to locate anywhere. As a result, Osterville may in time become more a primary residence than a seasonal respite. Village life sets itself apart. Osterville’s village center offers a mixed-use residential, dining, and retail environment in a coastal setting of enviable natural beauty. Its dense mixed-use character supports environmental stewardship; its small footprint promotes accessibility on foot or bicycle (promoting personal health and fitness); its library is a center of social engagement and historical and cultural awareness. Village cohesiveness fulfills a human desire for community. Technology offers the opportunity to return to a more village-centric lifestyle that allows residents to live, work, and play within their community. The Internet, cloud computing, collaboration and mobility technologies more and more enable seasonal residents of Osterville Village to increase the frequency and length of their visits to this idyllic setting. It makes no sense in the digital age to have hundreds of thousands of people clogging deteriorating infrastructures to go to an office, sit in a cubicle, and work on a computer. Technology is creating options for work that will support more diverse living models. Technological evolution is occurring in healthcare, education and transportation, which will enable more full-time living in areas such as Osterville. Telehealth, remote monitoring, digital records, and online video consultations are allowing retirees, the elderly, and disabled to remain in their homes with independence and dignity. Transportation changes are creating more options for those wishing to age in place. A younger generation values highly forms of transportation that Village Life – More Please! Technology offers village-centric lifestyle cont’d
  31. 31. have less impact on the environment. Regional transportation will improve, personal transport via Uber-type options will increase, and driverless cars will become a reality. Home schooling increases every year. In our local public, private, and charter schools nearly every student carries a tablet to school, textbooks go extinct, homework and lecture switch places, and teacher and student roles fundamentally change as the teacher becomes an enabler rather than an instructor of students. This revolution will create more options for families wishing to make Osterville their primary residence. The table of technology is being set to allow a return to desirable village- based living models. To gain a seat at that table requires that a community have robust physical and mobile access to the Internet. Fiber optics, with its near infinite data-carrying capacity, is the only long-term solution to this challenge. One organization that is looking to marry the ideals of the Village lifestyle with technology is the OpenCape Corporation, a community non-profit that has built a fiber optic broadband network in much of southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape. It is servicing large enterprises and institutions, including the Osterville Village Library. It is now expanding to deliver fiber optics to cell towers to improve wireless service in the region. OpenCape is developing a strategy, and seeking capital, to reach more small businesses and ultimately residential customers in the region. Community and business leaders recognize the Cape must protect its environment, diversify its economy, and attract young families. Growing demand for the village lifestyle and the technology revolution may put villages like Osterville at the forefront of a return to village-based living. – Dan Gallagher VILLAGETECHNOLOGY 36

  33. 33. The 135th Anniversary Project In Search of our Past Susan Belekewicz, Executive Director Osterville Village Library When you walk through the doors of the Osterville Village Library, you enter the modern space of a four-year-old building. But under closer inspection, there are a few indicators that the Library might have a more storied past. An old “Public Library” sign is prominently displayed on the great wall. At the Circulation Desk, a portrait hangs of a gentleman from days gone by, the Library’s founder. And hidden in a corner of the History Room, there is a small picture of an old library building. These treasured relics are sparse evidence that our Library is in its 134th year. Why are there so few vestiges of the past library? What happened to its memorabilia? As an institution that has served as “the heart of the community” for so many years, certainly there is more to be learned about the stories and the history of the institution and its traditions in the village. What are the stories of her past that has served to cement this bond? In 2017, the Osterville Village Library will celebrate its 135th Anniversary. In anticipation of this event, we embark on a research project to unlock the mystery of the Library’s history and to source artifacts and photos, to bring this history to life. Our goal is to capture anecdotal stories from the Library’s past and preserve them for posterity in a documentary video. Patron interviews will be digitally preserved and made available through the Library’s website, to provide for ongoing learning. Memorabilia and artifacts that are loaned to the Library will be used to create a 135th Anniversary commemorative display that will be featured during the summer of 2017. Additionally, the Library plans to publish a book about the library’s history and discoveries made during this research project. Help us preserve the past The project will only be successful with the help of the village. Many of you remember the former building that was on this current site. There are even those who remember the old structure that stood on the current site of Osterville House & Garden, and who can tell stories of Miss Kathy Hinckley, the famed librarian who served the community for 40 years. The Old School House, home to the Library until 1882. Miss Kathy Hinckley, the librarian from 1917 to 1956, at the circulation desk. 34. 34. 41 LIBRARYANNIVERSARY www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Many local families have lived their lives in Osterville for generations. Not only do they have vivid memories of the Library, but of the traditions of the library that have become a part of the way of life in Osterville. Did you know the people whose names in memory grace the rooms of the Library – Bob Smith, Lillian Dixie Morton, Caroline Crossett Rowland, Martha Hitchcock and Mary Mallory Kountze, Anne Williams McGraw, Margaret Fulham Mullin, Alice and Russell True, and Lyndon Paul Lorusso? We not only want to remember these special people and what was important to them about this library and this community, but to also preserve their memory for the appreciation of both today’s and tomorrow’s patrons. The need for this historic preservation is critically important for posterity before this anecdotal knowledge is lost. Join us in this project – share your stories – be a part of this unique opportunity to make history. A storied past without the stories is a past forgotten. It is our turn to capture the Library’s stories – future generations will be grateful we did! – Susan Belekewicz To learn more about the 135th Anniversary Project or if you would like to participate, please contact Susan at 508.420.0550 or at sbelekewicz@clamsnet.org. 9 Parker Rd., Osterville 508.428.4443 www.margorents.com Vacation • Yearly • Short Term
