The Liturgical Year:
ORDINARY TIME
• The Liturgical Year is the cycle of feasts and
seasons celebrating the events of the life of Jesus
and his presence in the Church
• Sunday is the Lord’s Day when we celebrate the
Resurrection of Jesus
• We participate in mass on Sunday to give praise
and thanks to God
•Mass is the heart of the life of the Church
• Ordinary Time is a liturgical season that occurs in
two segments
• The first segment is between the Christmas
Season and Ash Wednesday, around 4 weeks long
• The second segment is from Pentecost to the
feast of Christ the King, around 30 weeks
• “Ordinary Time” refers to ordinal (counted) time
• Liturgical color – green, symbolizing hope,
growth and life
• During Ordinary Time, we hear scriptures which
invite us to live out the mysteries of our faith
and the message of the gospel
• The liturgical year gives the context in which we
hear the gospel proclaimed
- Cycle A – Gospel of Matthew
- Cycle B – Gospel of Mark
- Cycle C – Gospel of Luke
• John’s Gospel is read during the Easter Season
every year
