ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT
NATURE OF ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT AS A DISCIPLINE:
Oral communication in Context is one of the core subjects of the senior high school
curriculum that is primarily a communication course. This will enable students to
engage in various communicative processes that will develop their macro skills for
the achievement of language proficiency and competencies in both academic and
work-related contexts.
GOAL OF ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT IN SHS:
To enable learners to effectively express their knowledge and understanding
systematically through listening and speaking in a variety of situations.

PERFORMANCE TASK:
The learners will be attending a job fair where they will be
interviewed by various employers. They need to prepare a well-
constructed resume and application letter beforehand based on
the position they are applying for. The employers will evaluate
them based on a given criteria (appearance, greeting,
communication, body language, posture and eye contact,
politeness, general attitude, responses to questions, candidate
integrity, and overall demonstration of interview skills).

GIVE THE CONTEXT
What are the skills and
strategies essential
for the interview?
Communicative
Strategies
Nomination & Restriction
1. Who started the interview? How did
the interview go?
2. What were the limitations of the
questions being asked?
3. How did the applicant respond to the
questions
4. What were the aspects considered by the
applicants in answering the questions?
Cohen (1990)
states that
strategies
must be used
to start and
maintain a
conversation.
Communicative Strategies
These are plans, ways or
means of sharing
information which are
adopted to achieve a
particular social, political,
psychological, or linguistic
purpose.
NOMINATION
A speaker carries out nomination
to collaboratively and productively
establish a topic.
Basically, when you employ this
strategy, you try to open a topic
with the people you are talking to.
NOMINATION
"Do you have anything to say?"
"Have you heard the news about
the prettiest girl in school?"
"Does that make sense to you?
"Now, it’s your turn to ask
questions."
NOMINATION
Keep the conversational
environment open for
opinions until the prior
topic shuts down easily and
initiates a smooth end.
RESTRICTION
Restriction in communication refers to
any limitation you may have as a speaker.
When communicating in the classroom,
in a meeting, or while hanging out with
your friends, you are typically given
specific instructions that you must follow.
RESTRICTION
For example, in your class, you might
be asked by your teacher to
brainstorm on peer pressure or
deliver a speech on digital natives.
In these cases, you cannot decide to
talk about something else.
RESTRICTION
Remember to always be on
point and avoid sideswiping
from the topic during the
conversation to avoid
communication
breakdown.
CONSIDERATIONS
1. Language form
2. Duration of interaction
3. Relationship of speaker
4. Role and responsibilities of the speaker, and
5. Message during communicative situations
Interview Simulation
NOMINATION
•Establish a topic
•Open for opinions
• Topics are organized
sequentially
RESTRICTION
•Limit a topic
•Always on point
•Avoid certain topics
VS
Where is your home?
Do you live in a house or a
flat?

In what way was the topic introduced to the class?
How was the importance of learning the topic emphasized?
In what way was the key concept of the topic taught?
What skill was targeted to develop?
How was this being developed in teaching the topic?
How was this skill assessed?
In what way were the students prepared for the completion of the Performance task?
PROCESS THE TD
1.The topic was introduced to the class through a short video that will
guide the students in their Think/Pair/Share activity discussing the
skills and strategies essential for the interview.
2.By coming up with a short skit, remembering that in conversation, it
is bound by implicit rules. Strategies must be used to start and
maintain a conversation.
3.Through interactive discussion, question and answer
4.Communication and critical and creative thinking
5.Interview simulation
6.Through free-practice/conversation having random topics
7.Through a reflection log: The students will reflect on the importance
of nomination and restriction essential in a job interview.
