EMULSION
UNDER SUPERVISION

2. Ophthalamic Preparation are Sterile and they are
divided into :
1- Ophthalamic Solution
2- Ophthalamic Suspension
3- Ophthalamic Emulsion
Introduction

3. • Opthalamic means : they are applied into the eye
or on part of it to give local effect
• Emulsion means : a colloid of two or more
immiscible liquid where one liquid contain a
dispersion of other immiscible liquid
• Example :
water mixture are emulsion when shaken with oil
the oil drops will form a drops and disperse
throughout the water with aids of emulsifying
agent .

4. • Ophthalamic Emulsion Are applied topical to the
Eye to treat surface or intraocular conditions
including : bacterial and fungal and viral infection
of the eye and this make elevation in the
intraocular pressure and glaucoma dry Eye due to
inadequate production of fluid bathing the eye .
• Reasons of Dry Eye :
• 1- Decreased Tear Film Production
2- Increase Tear Film Evaporation so we use
Ophthalamic emulsion to increase tear formation
and decrease the irritation of the conjunctiva in
the dry Eye and increase the contact time
between the drug and the eye .

5. Advantage And Disadvantage
• Advantage :
1- the emulsion dosage form they able deliver poorly water
soluble drug to the eye
drug they are dissolved in nonaqueous vehicle such as castor
oil then emulsified with water by using nonionic surfactant
2- O/W Emulsion is less irritant to the Eye
3- increase the constant time
4- Good bioavailability
5- Ophthalamic Emulsion increase the natural ability of the
eye to produce tears which may be reduced by inflammation
due to chronic dry Eye

6. • Disadvantage :
1- Emulsion Thermodynamically unstable and have a
short shelf-life
2- Improper formulation of emulsion lead to creaming
and cracking of emulsion
3- Improper selection of emulsifying agent lead to phase
inversion and sometimes may lead to cracking
4- difficult to be formulation and manufacturer under
sterile conditions
5- have some side effects like
burning , itching , stinging , redness , pain of the eye
overflow of tears , red eye , discharge blurred vision ,
other vision changes feelings in the eye .

7. Market Products
• 1- DUREZOL OPTHALMIC EMULSION 0,05%
Active ingredient : DIFLUPREDNATE
Indication : they are corticosteroid they are used for
treatment inflammation and pain associated with ocular
surgery , the treatment of endogenous anterior uveitis
Dose : Durezol is usually given 4 times per day for 2
weeks , after first 2 week the dose is decreased to 2 time
per day for 1 week or longer according the doctor’s
instruction .

8. • 2- RESTASIS OPTHALMIC EMULSION :
Active ingredient : CYCLOSPORIN EMULSION 0.05%
Indication : they are Ophthalamic emulsion is indicated
to increase tear production in patient whose tear
production is presumed to be suppressed due to ocular
inflammation associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca .
Dose : usual dose of Restasis is one drop in each eye
twice daily , use Restasis every 12 hours daily
(approximately) .

9. • 3- CATIONORM OPTHALAMIC EMULSION :
Active ingredient : Mineral oil (heavy) , Mineral oil (light)
Indication : is hydrating and lubricating emulsion which
protect the ocular surface and relieves the discomfort
and irritation due to dry eye caused by prolonged use of
contact lenses and environmental condition .
Dose : apply topically for each conjunctival sac , instill 1
or 2 drop as needed or according to your specialist’s
advice , avoided any contact with eye nozzle .
