Addiction
By addiction we usually mean continued involvement and dependence
on drugs, including alcohol and tobacco. But addiction can also
include an abnormal dependency on many other things, including
pornography, gambling and food.
South Africa’s 2nd Biennial Anti-Substance Abuse Summit in
Durban, with the theme ‘An Integrated Approach: Towards a Drug-
free Society’, was recently hosted by the Department of Social
Development and the Central Drug Authority (CDA) and was
attended by many ministers and top politicians. However, Charles
Parry and Bronwyn Myers in this issue1 argue persuasively that it is
time to move away from the outdated political rhetoric of a ‘drug-free
society’ and to engage in the work of formulating and implementing
an evidence-based policy.
Problem gambling, another destructive form of addiction, also
potentially has devastating effects on individuals and their families.
Collins and colleagues,2 also in this issue, describe the effective
management of this problem by the industry-supported National
Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP).
Substance abuse can be classified in terms of its potential harms.
Nutt and colleagues3 ranked drugs on the basis of their potential
for physical harm, dependence (addiction), and effects on families,
communities and society, thereby offering a rational solution to a
previously arbitrary classification. Tobacco is one of the most addictive
substances, although its harmful effects are usually only apparent
after long periods of time. Addiction to the more psychoactive
drugs often poses more immediate and bigger problems to families
and societies. It is in the management of these that supporters and
opponents of the decriminalisation of drugs often share a common
view, namely that such people require expert medical and other help
and support and not stigmatisation or incarceration in jail.
A recent book Recovery RSA: A Resource Book for Those Affected
by Addiction4 has made a timely appearance. Compiled by Barbara
Hutton, it draws on the experiences of many experts in the field and is
aimed at addicts, families, significant others, professionals and support
people. There is something of value for everyone with an interest in the
field. The somewhat uneven length and quality of the chapters and the
interspaced personal experiences of those with addictions strangely do
not detract from the value of the book – professionals and lay people
will return to the areas that most interest them.
The reasons for people becoming addicted to psychoactive
substances are dealt with by Rodger Meyer. He describes the
pathogenesis and the process of becoming addicted and notes that
there is still very little agreement among authorities regarding the

Addiction

ABSTRACT : The need for combating drug abuse among youths in Nigeria is very important. This is because many of them who are supposed to contribute to national development cannot do so due to the side effect drug abuse has posed on them. Adult education as an intervention can go a long way to enlighten youths on the dangers of abusing drug, and the need to do away with it. It is against this fact that this paper examines how adult education can be used as a strategy for combating drug abuse among Nigeria youths. The paper examines the prevalence of drug abuse among youths, the importance of drug, types of drug abuse by youths, and the reason youths abuse drug. In addition, the paper addresses the danger of drug, and how drug abuse can be combated via adult education programmes. The paper concludes that Adult Education via mobilization, civic education, remedial education, adult literacy, and vocational education can be used to free our youths from the shackles of drug abuse.

Health care providers, addiction spe-
cialists, and legislators are in agreement
that novel and more effective means
of reducing opioid and other addicting
substance misuse and abuse are critical
at this time in our country. The statistics
are dismal and increasingly alarming,
with more and more individuals at risk.
The widespread availability and use of
the antiopiate pharmaceutical, naloxone,
to reverse life-threatening overdoses is
a beginning and a step in the right di-
rection, but can only be considered an
initial intervention. What should follow
naloxone? We know the answer if the pa-
tient is an anesthesiologist resuscitated
in the hospital. For everyone who is not
a licensed health provider, it is less clear.
Substance abuse treatment in the United
States is predominantly outpatient, short
term, and with few objective checks on
the effectiveness of treatment. Substance
abuse treatment of health professions is
radically different in that it is not a treat-
ment program but is a program of active
care management. This management
includes residential treatment and sus-
tained monitoring of abstinence. Few
addicted patients receive anything that
approximates evidence-based care. [Psy-

pioid prescribing has in-
creased 300% in the past 20
years.1 Addiction medicine
and psychiatry specialists have wit-
nessed first-hand the effects of in-
creased opioid prescribing for nonma-
lignant pain. Chronic pain is a major
public health problem affecting more
than one-third of people in the United
States and up to 30% of the world’s

Opioid Abuse by the Youth
Opioids are substances that act on the opioid receptors so as to produce a morphine like outcome. They are used for pain relief, including anesthesia. They are also used to suppress diarrhoea, replacement therapy for opioid use disorder, suppressing cough as well as for executions in the United States. Opioids apart from being used for medical purposes they are also frequently used for non-medical purposes. When induced they give a euphoric effect and can also be used to prevent withdrawal (Satterley & Anitescu, 2015). In the United States there have been a lot of youths who use opioids for their euphoric effects. Due to their addictive nature, they have seen a lot of youths addicted to the substances which many result to fatal and adverse effects on the substance abuser.
Opioids are responsible for 1.7 deaths in 10, 000 people. Most of these people are young adults between 18 years to 25 years. Due to the rise in the use of this substances there have been introduction of educating the youths about the drugs. This is to create awareness as well as educate the youth on what to expect if they get themselves mixed up with the practice. In this paper we pose the question, what is the role of opioid education to the youth? We will talk about the impact that the program will have on the youths, be it positive or negative (Knaggs, 2019).
Opioids act by binding to opioid receptors, these are found principally in the peripheral and central nervous system as well as the gastrointestinal tract. These receptors mediate both the somatic as well as the psychoactive effects that opioids cause. Opioid drugs include antagonists like naloxegol which are used for opioid induced constipation and partial agonists like the anti diarrhoea drug loperamide (McDONOUGH, 2016). Due to opioids nature of being addictive and might result in fatal overdose, most of them are controlled substances. In the year 2013, between 28 and 38 million people were using opioids illicitly. That is 0.6% to 0.8% of the global population between the ages 15 and 65. In the year 2011, it was estimated that 4 million people in the United States used opioids recreationally and were dependent on them. As of 2015, increased numbers of recreational use and addiction were attributed to over prescription of the medication and inexpensive illicit heroin.

Due to the rise in the use of this substances there have been introduction of educating the youths about the drugs. This is to create awareness as well as educate the youth on what to expect if they get themselves mixed up with the practice. In this paper we pose the question, what is the role of opioid education to the youth? We will talk about the impact that the program will have on the youths, be it positive or negative (Knaggs, 2019).
Opioids act by binding to opioid receptors, these are found principally in the peripheral and central nervous system as well as the gastrointestinal tract. These receptors mediate both the somatic as well as the psychoactive effects that opioids cause. Opioid drugs include antagonists like naloxegol which are used for opioid induced constipation and partial agonists like the anti diarrhoea drug loperamide (McDONOUGH, 2016). Due to opioids nature of being addictive and might result in fatal overdose, most of them are controlled substances. In the year 2013, between 28 and 38 million people were using opioids illicitly. That is 0.6% to 0.8% of the global population between the ages 15 and 65. In the year 2011, it was estimated that 4 million people in the United States used opioids recreationally and were dependent on them. As of 2015, increased numbers of recreational use and addiction were attributed to over prescription of the medication and inexpensive illicit heroin.

Toxicology laboratories provide vital statistics on opiate use, abuse, and mortality, revealing the seriousness of this global issue and allowing schools and organizations to provide needed public education initiatives. Opiates, as a group, impact an individual's mental state, pain tolerance, and respiratory system. Individual effects vary in both the short term and long term. Identifying these effects play a huge role in opiate administration, treatment, and diagnosis. Education is one of the most important preventative measures of abuse. Identification impacts treatment. STATISTICS IDENTIFY RISK FACTORS OPIATE ABUSE AND TOXICOLOGY Overdoses are one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. Still, not all overdoses are fatal. Given prompt medical attention and accurate toxicology reports, patients can be revived, addicts can be rehabilitated, and drug abusers can be identified and helped. Opiates are needed. Abuse is not. Medical professionals still administer opiates as a way to manage intense pain. They have for hundreds of years.
