Introduction
1.1 Define the problem
No nation on earth is untouched by the effects of drug abuse. The problem has reached such a
proportion that it has become a global threat. From the impoverished villages where drugs are
grown to the modern cities where they are ultimately sold, drugs follow a complex route that
hits every country in the world; Bangladesh is no exception. As drug abuse and international
drug trade are ever increasing global threats. There are millions of drug-addicted people in
Bangladesh and most of them are young, between the ages of 18 and 30. And they are from all
strata of the society. It also has a deadly impact of it on the society. For the safety of our people
and the society from this deadly game, we have to control illicit drug transportation
immediately. Today thousands of people specially the street children across Bangladesh are
taking drugs on large scale which could sends shivers down the veins of the society. So, in near
future, Bangladesh will face a catastrophe if the alarming drug abuse is not effectively checked
through extensive motivation and prevention. But there is no fruitful work has been done on
this problem in Bangladesh. It is very essential to find out the root causes of this problem to
uproot it. Quite a few people live with drug addictions, and although many are able to escape
the destructive path and become sober, a large number of addicts suffer a relapse and continue
drug use. One of the best ways to enjoy a life free from addiction is to enter a reputable drug
rehab center and stick with a program. Drug rehab centers offer a variety of different programs.
Each addict is different. With this said a technique that works for one individual many not
work for another. Centers features expert health professionals with a background in addiction
medicine, and they can find a drug treatment program to meet every need. Addiction to illicit
drugs frequently results in significant harm to the drug users, to their families and
communities, and to society as a whole. Treatment is difficult because of the nature of
addiction and because of the many adverse ways in which habitual drug use may affect an
individual’s life. The main illicit drugs used in Ireland are generally categorized into two main
groups —opiates, such as heroin and non-prescribed methadone; and non-opiates, including
cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy. The effects of the different drugs on the user may be quite
different. There may also be significant variations in the type of user. Depending on the type of
drugs used and the stage of the addiction, persons seeking help may need to access a wide
range of treatment services (e.g. needle exchange, methadone maintenance, detoxification,
primary care, counseling etc.) and other supports. Aligning services and supports to specific
need is the key to the achievement of successful outcomes.
1.2: Objectives of the study
1. To investigate the way of treatment on drug addicted people
2. To understand the causes of taking drug
3. To examine their present relation with family and social life
4. To examine the pace of recovery of the patient
1.3: Importance of the study
Developing country, Bangladesh besets with a thousand of problems. Drug is one of the acute
problems of them. Drug abuse directly influences the economic and social aspects of a country.
Though the young people are mostly addicted to drug, but it is very alarming that recently young
people are committing to drug. Young generations are mostly addicted to drugs due to various
reasons. We are anxious about this problem. If this problem cannot be removed, our society will
be dropped to the edge of destruction. In this study we will identify the causes and the way of
treatment of drug addicted people.
However it is prepared by our hard work and cordial effort. So, we hope, this study could be
able to make some outcome in future for the nation and for the research.
1.4: Limitation of the study
Despite all positive initiatives taken to conduct this study properly, several biases are common
in this kind of interview survey based research.
Way of treatment on drug addicted people is a sensitive subject. So it is very difficult to
write on this subject in short time. For its sensitive character it is also very difficult to get the
respondents opinion. Most of the respondents don’t want to share the information and
sometime they skip some question also.

Review of literature
Key words: Drug, Drug addiction, Rehabilitation center
Drug:
A drug is a chemical that has medicinal, performance-enhancing or intoxicating effects when
introduced into the body of a human or other animal.
[http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryglossary/g/Drug-Definition.htm, June 11, 2014.]
The term drug refers mainly to chemical or plant-derived substances that affect psychological,
behavioral or physical functions and lead to varying degrees of dependence or addiction.
“The first national drug-abuse survey to include elementary-school children among the
respondents suggests that youngsters become more vulnerable to the lure of drugs once they
leave the familiar environment of primary school and strive to fit into middle school. The new
survey, by PRIDE, an organization based in Atlanta that counsels schools and parents on ways to
inhibit drug use among the young, also bolsters again what many researchers have long said: that
cigarettes, alcohol...” [New York Times News Service, April 8, 1999]
Drug abuse is a gruesome menace in the society with grave biological, social, financial,
psychological and security effect on the individuals, families and the community. It is a curse of
the modern free world and the scientific and technological civilization. The widespread abuse of
drugs has become a human tragedy. In Bangladesh about 80 per cent of the drug addicts are
adolescents and young men of 15 to 30 years of age. Drug abuse is now prevalent everywhere: in
the house, streets, in the workplace, parks, slums, markets and even in educational institutions
both in rural and urban areas. Virtually all segments of society are severely affected by this
problem. Near about 25 million people are drug addicted. The spread of multiple drug use has
aggravated the overall problem, personal and social days function, impairment of health, crime
and other violent behavior. Young people abuse drugs due to complex social and peer groups
influence, frustration, depression, curiosity, sub-cultural and psychological environment that
induce the youths to take drugs. Major risk factors responsible for drug abuse are family
disorganization, parental neglect, parent-child conflict, loss of spouse strife, in discipline,
isolation, lack of emotional support, rejection of love, over protection, unemployment, repeated
failure and personality mal adjustment and easy availability of drugs.

Drug addiction:
a condition characterized by an overwhelming desire to continue taking a drug to which one has
become habituated throughrepeated consumption because it produces a particular effect, usually
an alteration of mental status. Addiction is usuallyaccompanied by a compulsion to obtain the d
rug, a tendency to increase the dose, a psychologic or physical dependence, and detrimental cons
equences for the individual and society. Common addictive drugs are barbiturates, alcohol, and
morphine and other opioids, especially heroin, which has slightly greater euphorigenic propertie
s than other opium derivatives. [Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 8th edition. © 2009, Elsevier]
Abuse of narcotic drugs is a hazard of veterinary practice because of the availability of addictive
agents to registeredveterinarians. The same laws apply to members of the veterinary profession
as to the medical profession and aredesigned to protect them against becoming dependent upon
any drug. Deregistration and a consequent isolationfrom the prohibited substances is the usual
Penalty. [Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary, 3 ed. © 2007 Elsevier, Inc]
“BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on Tuesday unveiled a $20 million
package of proposals to tackle what he described as a crisis of addiction to opioid drugs in the
state, and called for a summit of all six New England governors to address a broader regional
response. A commission appointed by the governor, who in March declared addiction to opiate
drugs a public health emergency, called for steps including a expanding treatment...”

Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related
circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social
and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward
and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors. Addiction is characterized by inability to
consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of
significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional
emotional response. Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and
remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and
can result in disability or premature death.

According to a WHO survey, most drug users are young, their age ranging from 18 to 30 years.
Meanwhile, a separate study conducted by the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition
(JHPN) of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B)
shows that in the capital, 79.4 percent of the users are male and 20.6 percent are female.

Rehabilitation centre:
According to Princeton University's Word Net, rehabilitation is restoring someone to a useful
place in society. As such, a rehabilitation center is a location in which rehabilitation can
occur. People get displaced from society for a variety of reasons. Some may experience an
accident or illness that temporarily makes them unable to function the way they used to. Others
may have an addiction that handicaps them. A rehabilitation center provides a support system
to help restore people to their place in society.
“The failings of many treatment programs — and the comprehensive therapies that have been
scientifically validated but remain vastly underused — are described in an eye-opening new
book, “Inside Rehab,” by Anne M. Fletcher, a science writer whose previous books include the
highly acclaimed “Sober for Good.” “There are exceptions, but of the many thousands of
treatment programs out there, most use exactly the same kind of treatment you would have
received in 1950, not modern scientific approaches,” A. Thomas McLellan, co-founder of the
Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia, told Ms. Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher’s book, replete with
the experiences of treated addicts, offers myriad suggestions to help patients find addiction
treatments with the highest probability of success. Often, Ms. Fletcher found, low-cost, publicly
funded clinics have better-qualified therapists and better outcomes than the high-end residential
centers typically used by celebrities like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Indeed, their
revolving-door experiences with treatment helped prompt Ms. Fletcher’s exhaustive exploration
in the first place.”

According to Dr. Mark Willenbring, a former director of treatment and recovery research at
the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, said in an interview, “You don’t treat a
chronic illness for four weeks and then send the patient to a support group. People with a chronic
form of addiction need multimodal treatment that is individualized and offered continuously or
intermittently for as long as they need it.”

Chapter: 4
Conclusion
The main elements in combating drug addiction include measures to control availability and use
of drugs, treatment of withdrawal symptoms, and restoration of social moral and religious values.
To prevent re-addiction in patients, innovative treatment containing medical, social and religious
aspects have to be put in place. Easy availability of treatment will ensure the elimination of this
socially and physically dreaded disease. Treatment of addiction in our country is still not in a
hopeful stage. Some unqualified and unscrupulous people are engaged in making money out of
this affliction with mushrooming organizations and signboards, which confuse the patients. Such
institutions do not have doctors. Others falsely advertise the availability of services and doctors
from abroad. Such doctors even if available cannot be very effective, unless they are truly
knowledgeable about our social, cultural and economic environment. It is time that experienced
and qualified doctors and health professionals come to the aid of the addict in our society, and
give genuine and prolonged treatment and care. I am distressed that Bangladesh apparently is
drowning with addiction and not much is being done to help. But through our research, we did
spot one light in the vast darkness. Many drug addicts have good intentions, and they want to
become sober and live a somewhat normal existence. However, taking the first step is always the
hardest part. Besides, many addicts are reluctant to go through the withdrawal period, which may
consist of several upsetting physical symptoms that can last up to two weeks. Fortunately, drug
rehab centers strive to make the withdrawal period a more comfortable experience. Under the
watchful eye of caring health professionals, patients receive complete support. Typical
withdrawal symptoms include headaches, nausea, body aches, fever, chills, and so forth. In rare
cases, some patients experience life-threatening symptoms. Drug rehab programs vary, and some
treatment facilities do not offer the best treatment options.

  • 4. Chapter: 1 Introduction 1.1 Define the problem No nation on earth is untouched by the effects of drug abuse. The problem has reached such a proportion that it has become a global threat. From the impoverished villages where drugs are grown to the modern cities where they are ultimately sold, drugs follow a complex route that hits every country in the world; Bangladesh is no exception. As drug abuse and international drug trade are ever increasing global threats. There are millions of drug-addicted people in Bangladesh and most of them are young, between the ages of 18 and 30. And they are from all strata of the society. It also has a deadly impact of it on the society. For the safety of our people and the society from this deadly game, we have to control illicit drug transportation immediately. Today thousands of people specially the street children across Bangladesh are taking drugs on large scale which could sends shivers down the veins of the society. So, in near future, Bangladesh will face a catastrophe if the alarming drug abuse is not effectively checked through extensive motivation and prevention. But there is no fruitful work has been done on this problem in Bangladesh. It is very essential to find out the root causes of this problem to uproot it. Quite a few people live with drug addictions, and although many are able to escape the destructive path and become sober, a large number of addicts suffer a relapse and continue drug use. One of the best ways to enjoy a life free from addiction is to enter a reputable drug rehab center and stick with a program. Drug rehab centers offer a variety of different programs. Each addict is different. With this said a technique that works for one individual many not work for another. Centers features expert health professionals with a background in addiction medicine, and they can find a drug treatment program to meet every need. Addiction to illicit drugs frequently results in significant harm to the drug users, to their families and communities, and to society as a whole. Treatment is difficult because of the nature of addiction and because of the many adverse ways in which habitual drug use may affect an individual’s life. The main illicit drugs used in Ireland are generally categorized into two main groups —opiates, such as heroin and non-prescribed methadone; and non-opiates, including cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy. The effects of the different drugs on the user may be quite different. There may also be significant variations in the type of user. Depending on the type of drugs used and the stage of the addiction, persons seeking help may need to access a wide range of treatment services (e.g. needle exchange, methadone maintenance, detoxification, primary care, counseling etc.) and other supports. Aligning services and supports to specific need is the key to the achievement of successful outcomes.
  • 5. 1.2: Objectives of the study 1. To investigate the way of treatment on drug addicted people 2. To understand the causes of taking drug 3. To examine their present relation with family and social life 4. To examine the pace of recovery of the patient 1.3: Importance of the study Developing country, Bangladesh besets with a thousand of problems. Drug is one of the acute problems of them. Drug abuse directly influences the economic and social aspects of a country. Though the young people are mostly addicted to drug, but it is very alarming that recently young people are committing to drug. Young generations are mostly addicted to drugs due to various reasons. We are anxious about this problem. If this problem cannot be removed, our society will be dropped to the edge of destruction. In this study we will identify the causes and the way of treatment of drug addicted people. However it is prepared by our hard work and cordial effort. So, we hope, this study could be able to make some outcome in future for the nation and for the research. 1.4: Limitation of the study Despite all positive initiatives taken to conduct this study properly, several biases are common in this kind of interview survey based research. Way of treatment on drug addicted people is a sensitive subject. So it is very difficult to write on this subject in short time. For its sensitive character it is also very difficult to get the respondents opinion. Most of the respondents don’t want to share the information and sometime they skip some question also.
  • 6. Chapter: 2 Review of literature Key words: Drug, Drug addiction, Rehabilitation center Drug: A drug is a chemical that has medicinal, performance-enhancing or intoxicating effects when introduced into the body of a human or other animal. [http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryglossary/g/Drug-Definition.htm, June 11, 2014.] The term drug refers mainly to chemical or plant-derived substances that affect psychological, behavioral or physical functions and lead to varying degrees of dependence or addiction. [http://www.forcon.ca/learning/drugs.html] “The first national drug-abuse survey to include elementary-school children among the respondents suggests that youngsters become more vulnerable to the lure of drugs once they leave the familiar environment of primary school and strive to fit into middle school. The new survey, by PRIDE, an organization based in Atlanta that counsels schools and parents on ways to inhibit drug use among the young, also bolsters again what many researchers have long said: that cigarettes, alcohol...” [New York Times News Service, April 8, 1999] Drug abuse is a gruesome menace in the society with grave biological, social, financial, psychological and security effect on the individuals, families and the community. It is a curse of the modern free world and the scientific and technological civilization. The widespread abuse of drugs has become a human tragedy. In Bangladesh about 80 per cent of the drug addicts are adolescents and young men of 15 to 30 years of age. Drug abuse is now prevalent everywhere: in the house, streets, in the workplace, parks, slums, markets and even in educational institutions both in rural and urban areas. Virtually all segments of society are severely affected by this problem. Near about 25 million people are drug addicted. The spread of multiple drug use has aggravated the overall problem, personal and social days function, impairment of health, crime and other violent behavior. Young people abuse drugs due to complex social and peer groups influence, frustration, depression, curiosity, sub-cultural and psychological environment that induce the youths to take drugs. Major risk factors responsible for drug abuse are family disorganization, parental neglect, parent-child conflict, loss of spouse strife, in discipline, isolation, lack of emotional support, rejection of love, over protection, unemployment, repeated failure and personality mal adjustment and easy availability of drugs. • 7. Drug addiction: a condition characterized by an overwhelming desire to continue taking a drug to which one has become habituated throughrepeated consumption because it produces a particular effect, usually an alteration of mental status. Addiction is usuallyaccompanied by a compulsion to obtain the d rug, a tendency to increase the dose, a psychologic or physical dependence, and detrimental cons equences for the individual and society. Common addictive drugs are barbiturates, alcohol, and morphine and other opioids, especially heroin, which has slightly greater euphorigenic propertie s than other opium derivatives. [Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 8th edition. © 2009, Elsevier] Abuse of narcotic drugs is a hazard of veterinary practice because of the availability of addictive agents to registeredveterinarians. The same laws apply to members of the veterinary profession as to the medical profession and aredesigned to protect them against becoming dependent upon any drug. Deregistration and a consequent isolationfrom the prohibited substances is the usual Penalty. [Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary, 3 ed. © 2007 Elsevier, Inc] “BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on Tuesday unveiled a $20 million package of proposals to tackle what he described as a crisis of addiction to opioid drugs in the state, and called for a summit of all six New England governors to address a broader regional response. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors. Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death. [http://mccaonline.com/addiction-defined]
  • 8. According to a WHO survey, most drug users are young, their age ranging from 18 to 30 years. Meanwhile, a separate study conducted by the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition (JHPN) of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) shows that in the capital, 79.4 percent of the users are male and 20.6 percent are female. [The Daily Star, Dhaka, Wednesday, August 14, 2013] Rehabilitation centre: According to Princeton University's Word Net, rehabilitation is restoring someone to a useful place in society. As such, a rehabilitation center is a location in which rehabilitation can occur. People get displaced from society for a variety of reasons. Some may experience an accident or illness that temporarily makes them unable to function the way they used to. Others may have an addiction that handicaps them. A rehabilitation center provides a support system to help restore people to their place in society. “The failings of many treatment programs — and the comprehensive therapies that have been scientifically validated but remain vastly underused — are described in an eye-opening new book, “Inside Rehab,” by Anne M. Fletcher, a science writer whose previous books include the highly acclaimed “Sober for Good.” “There are exceptions, but of the many thousands of treatment programs out there, most use exactly the same kind of treatment you would have received in 1950, not modern scientific approaches,” A. Thomas McLellan, co-founder of the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia, told Ms. Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher’s book, replete with the experiences of treated addicts, offers myriad suggestions to help patients find addiction treatments with the highest probability of success. Often, Ms. Fletcher found, low-cost, publicly funded clinics have better-qualified therapists and better outcomes than the high-end residential centers typically used by celebrities like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Indeed, their revolving-door experiences with treatment helped prompt Ms. Fletcher’s exhaustive exploration in the first place.” [Jane E. Brody, 4 February, 2013; http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/04/effective-addiction- treatment/?_r=0] According to Dr. Mark Willenbring, a former director of treatment and recovery research at the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, said in an interview, “You don’t treat a chronic illness for four weeks and then send the patient to a support group. People with a chronic form of addiction need multimodal treatment that is individualized and offered continuously or intermittently for as long as they need it.” [http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/04/effective-addiction-treatment/?_r=0]

  • 12. Chapter: 4 Conclusion The main elements in combating drug addiction include measures to control availability and use of drugs, treatment of withdrawal symptoms, and restoration of social moral and religious values. To prevent re-addiction in patients, innovative treatment containing medical, social and religious aspects have to be put in place. Easy availability of treatment will ensure the elimination of this socially and physically dreaded disease. Treatment of addiction in our country is still not in a hopeful stage. Some unqualified and unscrupulous people are engaged in making money out of this affliction with mushrooming organizations and signboards, which confuse the patients. Such institutions do not have doctors. Others falsely advertise the availability of services and doctors from abroad. Such doctors even if available cannot be very effective, unless they are truly knowledgeable about our social, cultural and economic environment. It is time that experienced and qualified doctors and health professionals come to the aid of the addict in our society, and give genuine and prolonged treatment and care. I am distressed that Bangladesh apparently is drowning with addiction and not much is being done to help. But through our research, we did spot one light in the vast darkness. Many drug addicts have good intentions, and they want to become sober and live a somewhat normal existence. However, taking the first step is always the hardest part. Besides, many addicts are reluctant to go through the withdrawal period, which may consist of several upsetting physical symptoms that can last up to two weeks. Fortunately, drug rehab centers strive to make the withdrawal period a more comfortable experience. Under the watchful eye of caring health professionals, patients receive complete support. Typical withdrawal symptoms include headaches, nausea, body aches, fever, chills, and so forth. In rare cases, some patients experience life-threatening symptoms. Drug rehab programs vary, and some treatment facilities do not offer the best treatment options. X
