SIMULATION
Simulation is a quantitative analysis
technique that involves building a
mathematical model that represents a
real-world situation.
3. 3
Advantages and disadvantages
The main advantages of simulation techniques are as follows:
1. flexible and straightforward technique.
2. It can be used to analyse large and complex real-world systems
3. Simulation may be the only method available when it is difficult to observe the
actual reality.
4. Once a model has been constructed it may be used over and over again to analyse
different possible situations.
5. It can be used to study the interactive effect of individual components or variables in
order to determine which ones are important.
6. Usually data for further analysis can be generated from a simulation model.
4. 4
The main drawbacks or limitations of simulation are:
(i) Simulation is a trial-and-error approach that may produce different solutions in
repeated runs.
(ii) Simulation model does not produce answers by itself. It is 'run' rather than solved.
(iii) In very large and complex problems the large number of variables and the inter-
relationships between them makes the problem very unwieldy and hard to programme.
(iv) It is a time consuming and expensive process because a number of simulation nuns
are required to solve a problem.
(v) Each simulation model is unique and its solutions and inferences are not usually
transferable to other problems.
(vi) A good simulation model may be very expensive
