With the medicine technology advances, it is possible to create a patient profile by a full genomic data along with vast amount of patient data from personal fitness devices, medical record, etc. Translational medicine is aim at moving faster from research to patient care by integrating the data across traditional silos which requires a cloud to support multi-tenancy, self-service, big data analysis and HPC workload. OpenStack are good at virtual machine management, while we use VM to serve as a container host which brings virtualization overhead in overlay networking, I/O operations, etc. and it won’t get benefit from some advanced features. In this session, we'll share: How to build an OpenStack cloud for HPC with multi-tenancy and self-services; How to build a bare metal kubernetes cluster with OpenStack Magnum and Ironic; The issues we are facing and how we overcome them; The gaps remaining and what does the community need to improve in the future; More thinking and new ideas.

Among the cool stuff we do at Silk, my colleagues and I develop the Silk CSI Plugin for customers who use our system as the storage layer for their Kubernetes workloads. Before deep diving into the code and as part of my ramp-up on this subject I prepared some slides that cover some basic and important information on this topic. These slides start by recapping some basic storage principals in containers and Kubernetes, continues with some more advanced use cases (including an "offline demo" of persisting Redis data on EBS volumes), and ends with a detailed information on the CSI solution itself. IMHO, reviewing these slides can improve your understanding on this matter and can get you started implementing your own CSI plugin. In the face of ever-growing data processing requirements, existing data center infrastructures struggle to deliver on flexibility and TCO expectations. Intel Rack Scale Design Technology is to evolve the data center design methodology from physical resource aggregation to resource pools and eventually target for future’s service aware orchestration. Meanwhile, as a ubiquitous cloud OS that able to control/orchestrate large pools of compute, storage and network resources, OpenStack can take advantages of it to deliver more optimized flexibility and performance against cost in areas such as deep learning, big data, telecom, etc. Valence is a new OpenStack project announced in Barcelona Summit which is a collection of all things about RSD for OpenStack. Computer networks are undergoing a phenomenal growth, driven by the rapidly increasing number of nodes constituting the networks. At the same time, the number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly increasing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions require the availability of separate, test environments that best reflect the complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, and cyber security training activities, thus enabling enterprises to study cyber defense strategies and allowing security researchers to evaluate their algorithms at scale. The main objective is delivering to researchers and practitioners an overview of the technological means and the practical steps to setup a private cloud platform based on OpenNebula for the creation and management of virtual environments that support cyber-security activities of training and testing, as well as an overview of its possible applications in the cyber security domain. In particular: 1. We describe our infrastructure based on OpenNebula 2. OpenNebula users have a range of storage options available to them, including proprietary appliances, proprietary software and Open Source software projects. This session will present a fully Open Source approach, that tightly integrates with Linux, and makes full use of the mature building blocks within the Linux kernel (LVM, Software RAID, DM-crypt, NVMe-oF Target, DRBD, etc...), and delivers one of the highest performance open source storage stacks currently available. The core goal is to expose the improved performance of NVMe storage devices to VMs and containers. The solution covers both local NVMe drives and NVMe-oF. For interacting with NVMe-oF targets it supports the Swordfish-API and LVM & Linux’s software NVMe-oF target. The solution contains a storage addon for OpenNebula.
