As a novelist, the alphabet is your best friend... Or rather, your first friend - you wouldnât be doing much writing without it!
Obviously it isnât possible to encapsulate all there is to know about novel writing in an A to Z (this would be a very short course if it was) but hereâs a good overview of what you want to be aware of as you move through the Now Novel process... Things I wish I had known before I wrote my first novel.
Think of it as the Novel Writerâs Alphabet. The Now Novel Writerâs Alphabet.
11 What I have learned to do when I sit down to work on a shitty.docxhyacinthshackley2629
Â
11 What I have learned to do when I sit down to work on a shitty first draft is to quiet the voices in my head. First there is the vinegar-lipped Reader Lady, who says primly, âWell, thatâs not very interesting, is it?â And there is the emaciated German male who writes these Orwellian memos detailing your thought crimes. And there are your parents, agonizing over your lack of loyalty and discretion; and thereâs William Burroughs, dozing off or shooting up because he finds you as bold and articulate as a houseplant; and so on. And there are also the dogs: letâs not forget the dogs, the dogs in their pen who will surely hurtle and snarl their way out if you ever stop writing, because writing is, for some of us, the latch that keeps the door of the pen closed, keeps those crazy ravenous dogs contained.
12 Quieting these voices is at least half the battle I fight daily. But this is better than it used to be. It used to be 87 percent. Left to its own devices, my mind spends much of its time having conversations with people who arenât there. I walk along defending myself to people, or exchanging repartee with them, or rationalizing my behavior, or seducing them with gossip, or pretending Iâm on their TV talk show or whatever. I speed or run an aging yellow light or donât come to full stop, and one nanosecond later am explaining to imaginary cops exactly what I had to do what I did, or insight that I did not in fact do it.
13 I happened to mention this to hypnotist I saw many years ago, and he looked at me very nicely. At first I thought he was feeling around on the floor for the silent alarm button, but then he gave me the following exercise, which I still use to this day.
14 Close your eyes and get quite for a minute, until the chatter starts up. Then isolate one of the voices and imagine the person speaking as a mouse. Pick it up by the tail and drop it into a mason jar. Then isolate another voice, pick it up by the tail, drop it in the jar. And so on. Drop in any high maintenance parental units, drop in any contractors, lawyers, colleagues, children, anyone who is whining in your head. Then put the lid on, and watch all these mouse people clawing at the glass, jabbering away, trying to make you feel like shit because you wonât do what they wantâwonât give them more money, wonât be more successful, wonât see them more often. Then imagine that there is a volume-control button on the bottle. Turn it all the way up for a minute, and listen to the stream of angry, neglected, guilt mongering voice. Then turn it all the way down and watch the frantic mice lunge at the glass, trying to get to you. Leave it down, and get back to your shitty first draft.
15 A writer friend of mine suggests opening the jar and shooting them all in the head. But I think heâs a little angry, and Iâm sure nothing like this would ever occur to you.

Shitty First Drafts
Anne Lamott from Bird by Bird
Born in San Francisco in 1954, Anne Lamott is a graduate of Goucher College
in Baltimore and is the author of six novels, including Rosie (1983), Crooked Little
Heart (1997), All New People (2000), and Blue Shoes (2002). She has also been the
food reviewer for California magazine, a book reviewer for Mademoiselle, and a
regular contributor to Salonâs âMothers Who Think.â Her nonfiction books include
Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Sonâs First Year (1993), in which she
describes her adventures as a single parent, and Tender Mercies: Some Thoughts on
Faith (1999), in which she charts her journey toward faith in God.
In the following selection, taken from Lamottâs popular book about writing,
Bird by Bird (1994), she argues for the need to let go and write those âshitty first
draftsâ that lead to clarity and sometimes brilliance in our second and third drafts.
1 Now, practically even better news than that of short assignments is the idea of
shitty first drafts. All good writers write them. This is how they end up with good
second drafts and terrific third drafts. People tend to look at successful writers who
are getting their books published and maybe even doing well financially and think
that they sit down at their desks every morning feeling like a million dollars, feeling
great about who they are and how much talent they have and what a great story they
have to tell; that they take in a few deep breaths, push back their sleeves, roll their
necks a few times to get all the cricks out, and dive in, typing fully formed passages
as fast as a court reporter. But this is just the fantasy of the uninitiated. I know some
very great writers, writers you love who write beautifully and have made a great deal
of money, and not one of them sits down routinely feeling wildly enthusiastic and
confident. Not one of them writes elegant first drafts. All right, one of them does, but
we do not like her very much. We do not think that she has a rich inner life or that
God likes her or can even stand her. (Although when I mentioned this to my priest
friend Tom, he said you can safely assume you've created God in your own image
when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.)
2 Very few writers really know what they are doing until they've done it. Nor do
they go about their business feeling dewy and thrilled. They do not type a few stiff
warm-up sentences and then find themselves bounding along like huskies across the
snow. One writer I know tells me that he sits down every morning and says to
himself nicely, "It's not like you don't have a choice, because you do -- you can
either type, or kill yourself." We all often feel like we are pulling teeth, even those
writers whose prose ends up being the most natural and fluid. The right words and
sentences just do not come pouring out like ticker tape most of the time. Now,
Muriel Spark is said to have fel.

The Information Disruption Industry and the Operational Environment of the Fu...Vincent O'Neil
Â
Executive Summary:
Use of everyday technology to collect personal data is increasing, and as these efforts become more intrusive, popular resentment is likely to grow.
If that irritation reaches a tipping point, existing privacy protection services will expand enormouslyâcreating an Information Disruption Industry (IDI) dedicated to thwarting the collection, storage, and sale of personal data.
The expanded IDIâs efforts will do direct and indirect damage to a wide range of systemsâeven systems unrelated to personal data collection.
This likely scenario has the potential to seriously impact the information landscape in 2035, if not sooner.

Writing in Different Genres: Why, Why Not, and How ToVincent O'Neil
Â
Presentation outlining some of the reasons why writers might try creating works in more than one genre, complete with definitions, guidance, and examples.
This is a presentation I gave at the 50th annual "Boskone" literary science fiction convention in Boston, Massachusetts in February, 2013. It covers the different ways that Excel can be used to aid in brainstorming, developing an idea, building a plot, and considering alternatives when writing a story
Risk consultant Vincent H. OâNeil argues that financial crises are often fueled by uncertaintyâand that the creation of a hard-number maximum exposure value can help end that uncertainty and clear the way to a solution.
This presentation describes a new method for controlling risk and preparing for the next financial crisis which puts a hard-number Maximum Loss Value (effectively a cap) on every financial arrangement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Â
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Â
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
⢠The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
⢠The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate âany matterâ at âany timeâ under House Rule X.
⢠The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
Â
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnât one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. â The less said the better. Entice the reader to want to read on. I love openings where the reader is thrown into a moment in the characterâs life without introduction or background.â Advice from the Web â The key word is INVOLVE. Grab the reader's attention at once. Don't start off with a long scene-setting passage where nothing happens. There must be something in the first few lines that makes the reader want to reach into the story to find out what happens next.â â Usually a bit of dialogue or something that grabs at the reader, something funny or shocking (depending on the genre). There is also a lot to be said for introducing your main character quickly to get the reader involved. And get to the story from page one.â
6. SPADE & ARCHER Wolf-like eyes? And horizontal â what does that say? Not young Why pleasant? Playful? A girl he might want to avoid? Confirmation; also his assistant is helping him
7. Advice from the Web 2 â A good opening is one that interests the reader, or asks a question. Okay: It was a wet Monday morning. Better: Why did it always rain when Cindy was in trouble? This is better. It tells the reader a number of things, and also raises a question: Why is Cindy in trouble?â â There is no formula for this. Write something that you, as a reader, would find intriguing or exciting. Think of yourself as a storyteller, rather than a 'writer', and imagine how you might get someone else interested if you were telling the story aloud.â
11. Conversational ; telling a story â Wolfeâ identified as the boss; Does this tell us anything about the Narrator? Can we tell who Fritz is, or what his job is? Modesty? Helpful? Response to the âbellâ
23. Description; not a âgreat lineâ? Overdone, or does this tell us something? What does this tell us? Humorous, but there on business Not impressed by wealth?
26. It was one of those sultry early September nights that can lull you into thinking summer will last forever. On Secaucus Road the scent of leaves and baked pavement mixed with the emissions of traffic and industry. Inside Snappers, nicotine and beer fumes and the barmaidâs Anais Anais made all the seasons smell the same, though in summer there was a tinge more sweat in the mix.
27. Conclusions (maybe) Intriguing : Throw the reader into a moment in the characterâs life without introduction or background Interesting : Start with dialogue or action, or something funny (or shocking) Entertaining : Imagine how you might get someone else interested if you were telling the story aloud
28. Conclusions (maybe) 2 Tone : The opening should convey the manner in which the story is going to be told (funny, dark, etc.) Character : Starting with the main character will help the reader identify with that character. If that player has a flaw, perhaps indicate that early on Show : Finding ways to convey a feeling or a description without simply stating it can pull the reader in
