In the short-term, retailers can use a middleware layer to integrate different systems, but ultimately there should be one platform handling all transactions. 1.1 Is there a Public FAQ for Openbravo for Retail?
Yes, we maintain it in the Forge here.

2.1 Who are the ideal target customers for Openbravo for Retail?
Openbravo for Retail can be deployed to retailers of every size. Thanks to its breadth
and robust platform, Openbravo for Retail can help any kind of retailer leverage IT
to drive better business results:
• Brick-and-mortar retailers, seeking a modern retail solution to improve
operations and customer experience, while also providing support for opening
the web channel. In this case, thanks to its modular design, it is possible the
retailer decide to adopt the complete solution or just only to support the Store
Operations, with our new generation POS, by integrating Openbravo for Retail
with its legacy retail management system.
• E-Commerce retailers, seeking a back office solution to improve their logistic
and financial processes
• Franchisors, seeking a scalable solution with a clear cost model for their
current or new franchisees and owned stores, to increase their network
performance and reduce time-to-market when adding and opening new stores
• Retailers seeking a solution to support international operations, with multi-
language and multi-accounting schema capabilities
Although Openbravo for Retail can fit on any retailer size and sub-industry, it becomes
a much more competitive alternative under these conditions:
• Multiple store retailer
• Annual revenues between 10 to 250M
• Softgoods and Hardgoods

2.3 Does the partner get a commission with Openbravo for Retail?
Yes. Partners receive their regular commission for Certified and Gold Partnership.
2.4 As a partner, how can I test Openbravo for Retail for myself?
Openbravo for Retail is a commercial module. You can use your Partner Key to install it
for commercial and testing purposes. You’ll find a new module, which is a template,
called Openbravo for Retail. You only need to install it.
2.5 Can I combine Standard subscription type with Enterprise or
Unlimited?
Openbravo for Retail enables mix and match selection of the Back Office and POS
components under a compatible Pricing Model based on the level of support.
Specifically, Unlimited Pricing for the Back Office may be combined with Enterprise
Pricing for the POS. Similarly, Unlimited Pricing for the POS Smay be combined with
Enterprise Pricing for the Back Office. However, neither of these two Pricing Models
may be combined with Standard Pricing, due to the premium support that is part of
both Enterprise and Unlimited Pricing. Note that Openbravo for Retail software is
based on Openbravo Professional Edition software.
2.6 Do you have a roadmap for Openbravo for Retail?
Yes. See here.
4. 2.7 What about Java POS in the future?
Openbravo Java POS has been our POS offering for Retail during the last years. It has
been implemented successfully in several worldwide retailers, providing us a deep
business knowledge and industry best practices, and product experience. However,
although it is developed in Java, it is an stand-alone application, which results in a
global client-server Retail solution, far away from the today’s industry tendencies, with
web, mobile and cloud-ready retail applications. Most retailers are already relying on
such technologies and are becoming the de-facto architecture for the future.
Openbravo Web POS is the new kid in the town, with amazing new capabilities,
specially designed to address these new challenges. Its full web and mobile ready
capabilities, together with the Openbravo 3 platform, will convert it in a killer
application, that most retailers would love to have, and will become for sure the key
decision element to adopt Openbravo for Retail. In case of partners, Openbravo Web
POS represents also a big improvement, thanks to its modularity capability, that will let
you share your knowledge and have new revenue streams by publishing new modules.
This will help also to speed up the improvement and adoption of the solution with a lot
of new modules appearing during the next months, thus helping to reuse our global
retail knowledge in a more effective way. Its architecture also becomes the perfect
framework for sub-industry verticals, like Fast Food, Apparel, resulting in a solid
opportunity for those partners interested on these kind of solutions.
From a product perspective, we firmly believe that Openbravo Web POS is the future,
and based on that it becomes the new official POS version within the Openbravo
for Retail, ready to be sold and implemented for new opportunities and projects.
By acquiring it, customers benefit from our deep experience in the industry and POS
products, and from new business and technical capabilities, fully aligned with the new
retailers challenges today but prepared for tomorrow. Our commitment with
Openbravo Java POS will be the same based in our product lifecycle policies,
therefore protecting the investment made by our customers and providing peace
of mind its support and maintenance. This means that customers with Java POS
are not forced to migrate to the new Web POS to receive support, and that we
will continue offering this support during 5 years after the new POS version
launch.
2.8 Can Openbravo for Retail be operated as a stand-alone solution
for stores?
Yes. Openbravo for Retail can be operated as a stand-alone solution. You must only
deploy your Openbravo instance server in the store and install the Openbravo for Retail
solution there. From a subscription perspective, the same general conditions apply,
requiring to choose a subscription type (which includes initially up to a certain number
of backoffice users) and purchase the needed number of POS terminals.
3 Technical
3.1 Openbravo for Retail is a new software distribution, what does
it mean?
It means that Openbravo for Retail is distributed as a new independent solution
included in the Openbravo Product Portfolio. Openbravo for Retail is implemented
5. as an Industry Template that includes Openbravo Core, several retail and generic
modules (Web POS, Retail Configuration, Aging Report etc.) and specific retail
configuration. This Industry Template constitutes a full independent solution, to be used
as a complete solution, and not as optional complementary functionality. At this
moment it is released just as a module to be installed on top of Openbravo core
distribution, but in the coming future it will be released using other deployment vehicles
(like Retail Appliances, etc.).
3.2 Which is the transactions volume that Openbravo for Retail can
manage?
Openbravo for Retail supports a huge number of transactions. See detailed information
about this here.
3.3 How much time can Openbravo Web POS work offline?
Openbravo Web POS supports high activity rate even without connection to the server.
However, the offline mode is not intended to be the normal operation mode, but a
temporary status while the connectivity returns, which means it has been designed as a
tool for enabling sales during short periods.
Openbravo Web POS has been built with HTML5. HTML5 enables the use of a local
database managed by the browser, called Web DB. Even if the terminal is switched off,
data is maintained. It’s because of this database, that Openbravo Web POS is
supported for Chrome and Safari. Firefox and Explorer do not support Web DB.
Considerations:
• The number of orders you can process in offline mode depends on your selling
rate (number of orders per minute) and the order size (average number of lines
per order)
• If you have a constant selling rate of 4 orders per minute (very unlikely), in 12
hours of offline mode you have produced 2880 orders and only filled the 17% of
the initial database size
• The only limit is your device storage space on Android and Windows devices.
The database will grow silently if you reach the initial 50MB size. It will take you
more than 2 years in the Samsung Galaxy Tab and more than 4 in the Windows
7 device
• On the iPad you have a fixed quota of 50MB but you’ll have to remain selling for
3 days in offline mode (at constant rate of 4 orders per minute) to fill the
database
• If you think you’ll have huge amount of master data (products, business
partners, etc) and long offline periods, you must use an Android or Windows
device
• Offline mode is an exceptional fall back mode, it shouldn’t be your normal
operation mode. In online mode, every closed order is sent to the server
immediately. The server will process that order and update stock and execute
any other retail related process

4 Delivery
4.1 Which is the average time for an implementation of Openbravo
for Retail?
Openbravo for Retail is an affordable solution thanks to its subscription model, web
arquitecture but also because of its agile methodology implementation. It lets retailer to
minimize the time-to-market with a rapid implementation process.
The average implementation time depends however in several factors that must be
considered and drive the expectations management in front of your customer:
• Number and complexity of the customizations
• In case of brick-and-mortar the number of stores, thinking on the roll-out
A basic scenario for only supporting the Store Operations, without customizations nor
integrations, and in a single store scenario, could take a few days (including basic
tasks and training). From here and depending on the final scope, we could talk about a
few weeks, or months, for more complex projects including for example complex
customizations, multi-store, and with Head Office Operations and E-Commerce
integration. International requirements will also make increase the complexity and time,
specially due to the final deployment activities, in case for example of a multi-country
deployment.
4.2 Openbravo web POS is build with HTML5, do I need new skills
for delivery?
In most cases, when implementing Openbravo Web POS you will not need to
customize it but use it as is. In that case, the new technology used for this component
will not add any additional burden for delivery. But if you need to adapt it to particular
customer needs then you need to know how to develop on top of this technology,
which requires addtional skills. Openbravo will publish a Web POS Developers
Guide and additional training material to address this new knowledge requirement.
4.3 Will Openbravo provide specific Retail support services?
Openbravo will launch in short a 24x7 support service that will help to address partially
the needs of an industry like Retail. Please contact your CBM for details.
However, Openbravo’s support services do not include by the moment support to
hardware problems, another important aspect in Retail (printers, touch screens…).
When preparing the maintenance contract after going-live, partner must consider all
these aspects.
7. 4.4 Will an Openbravo for Retail solution training program exist?
Yes. We are finishing the training contents, including functional and technical materials.
Stay tuned to our Training communications.
