  • 33. Discovery ● One of our most popular textbooks is part of a Coursera MOOC ● Other popular textbooks are listed on Amazon and many external websites,such as library sites and directories ● Downloads peak during the start of semester, beginning of a course, or beginning of month

  2. Open Monograph Press was used as a ‘one stop shop’
  3. We are serving content meant to be read on a variety of devices,screen resolutions, and orientations. Our site needed to be flexible as well.
  4. We needed some custom taxonomies: Ability to search and browse books by author
  5. Many of our textbooks’ subject matter can apply to several disciplines. We needed a flexible way to add keywords for subject matter
  6. Very important to us, was the ability to search and browse by college affiliation. In our case the SUNY system.
  7. [PLAY TRANSITION] Many of our authors self-publish on Amazon, iTunes, Lulu and others. We wanted to add those links to their textbook pages on our site. We wanted to show publication metadata and link to any respective urls. For example, we wanted to link OCLC numbers to the textbook’s OCLC listing on Worldcat.
  8. [PLAY TRANSITION] We wanted to have flexible author page templates. Each author’s page would display the author’s biography and respective publications. We wanted the ability for authors to add their own biographical information, photo, and social media links. They haven’t yet done so, but as I’ve learned in the coding universe, ‘it’s better to have and not need, than to need and not have.’
  9. With Open Monograph Press, I had to run database queries to add administrators or to change a user’s permission level. This is not recommended procedure for an average user of a site. We wanted to be able to create roles and change permissions through a user-friendly interface on the site Dashboard.
  10. We needed our site to generate friendly URLs. Also known as “permalinks.” User friendly URLs are great for search engines, analytics tracking, and of course for people to remember. Often an author would want to send their textbook links to their students, to publishers, or share it on Twitter and other social media. It’s a lot easier to share a short and friendly link.
  11. We needed a granular method to distinguish PDF and EPUB download counts. We needed a method that could also include other download formats we may support in the future.
  12. [PLAY TRANSITION] We wanted to create reports for authors, adopters, and other interested parties. Many times an author will call us ‘out of the blue’ asking for download counts.
  13. [PLAY TRANSITION] I created a custom mobile-responsive WordPress theme and imported our textbook description, metadata, and static page content into WordPress.

  19. There are dizzying numbers of apps and browser versions out there, and not every one interprets content the same way, especially with EPUB format. We thought it would help to have a list of the most stable browsers and readers for various operating systems and devices. We also hope this encourages more people to download EPUB versions of our textbooks.
