The Ubuntu Openstack ecosystem is growing fast. This is good news. But as the options in cloud building grow, so does the task of ensuring interoperability between all the components. At Canonical we have deep experience of conformity and interoperability testing between OpenStack and Ubuntu. To bring this to the wider ecosystem we’ve opened a lab dedicated to testing components’ interoperability. We want to be able to present a wide a range of validated and supportable technical solutions. The talk will present the OIL describe how and why Canonical creates it and how to benefit from it.

The Université Catholique de Louvain has been using OpenNebula in IT academic environment for several years. We were so satisfied that when we decided to implement VDI we looked for a connection broker compatible with this cloud orchestrator. Thanks to OpenNebula + UDS Enterprise VDI joint solution, we will soon be able to give our 37,000 students access to virtual classrooms as if they were in the standard computer classrooms, so that they could access the same software from anywhere, anytime and using any device. The first tests with the solution have been very successful and we are now looking at expanding it to the whole university. In this session we will detail how the VDI infrastructure was built, the different components used and their role in the platform and how the IT staff deploys and manages the virtual desktops. We'll also explain how in the near future we will extend the use of OpenNebula to remote applications.

PRESENTED AT OPENSTACK SUMMIT - BARCELONA 2016 With test driven development, continuous integration/continuous deployment and devops practices now the norm, most organizations understand the importance of testing their applications. But what about the cloud those applications are going to live on? Too many companies miss this critical step, leading to gaps in their operations, which can lead to production issues, API outages, inability to upgrade, and general instability of the cloud. It all begs the question: “Do you even test?" During this session, attendees will learn how Rackspace leverages Red Hat’s Distributed Continuous Integration (DCI) to build a better OpenStack experience for their customers while reducing the time required to not only roll out the latest version of OpenStack to new customers, but also begin upgrading customers within weeks of announcement. In addition to this, the automated testing in DCI raises bugs directly with Red Hat QEs team to shorten the feedback cycle and improve the final product.

Over the past two years the OSL has been building a POWER8 based OpenStack environment working in conjuction with IBM. The purpose of this environment is to provide a stable yet flexible infrastructure for FOSS projects to port and test their code on the new PowerPC 64bit Little Endian (ppc64le) architecture. This session will cover various aspects of the path we took to build and continue to run the environment. Some topics will include some of the initial challenges we faced and how we solved them. In addition, we’ll cover some of the specific porting issues we ran into with ppc64le. We’ll also cover some of the major issues we ran into with OpenStack specifically on ppc64le and how we solved them. And finally, we’ll discuss the future of the cluster and the work we’ve put into designing it. Attendees to this session should have some foundational knowledge of the POWER and OpenStack ecosystem. If you’re interested in architecture porting issues and/or interested in OpenStack deployment war stories, this session might be for you.

When creating a new Microservice you typically need to add a lot of boilerplate to the code, such as logging, metrics, authentication, SSL, secrets/credentials, etc... All this ends up overshadowing the actual logic of the service itself and results in a lot of dependencies and code. Because of this, we at Soluto created a template for the boilerplate, which worked great... Until we had to upgrade one of the dependencies which resulted in huge effort of code upgrades and deployment across each and every service that uses the template. And that’s besides the fact we needed to make a separate template for each language we used (and over the years, the number of programming languages we use at production increased dramatically). We needed a way to simplify all this. We wanted to get rid of the boilerplate while maintaining the functions listed above. So we decided to delegate the entire responsibility to the Kubernetes infrastructure. In this lecture, I will do a live coding session and show you how to remove the boilerplate from your code and move it to the infrastructure, and discuss the benefits and limitations of this approach.

Machine Learning is no doubt the hottest trend in IT nowadays. Deep Neural Network (DNN), a subfield of Machine Learning with mode of operation loosely inspired by the brain, allows us to solve complex problems such as image recognition that has been very difficult to solve using standard programming paradigms. DNN concepts are not new. However, and until recently, applying them in practice could not be realized due to their high computational demands. With the recent development in parallel computing, especially around GPU acceleration and high speed and efficient networking, DNN has become a reality in modern data centers. In this talk we will describe the system requirements to effectively run a machine learning cluster with popular frameworks such as TensorFlow. We will discuss how such a system can be deployed in an OpenStack-based cloud without compromises, enjoying high-performance DNN programming paradigm as well as the benefits of cloud and software-defined data centers.
