abstract:
The state of Georgia offers an enterprise Drupal platform as a service for state agencies - think SquareSpace for the state. GeorgiaGov Interactive is able to offer a centralized platform that meets the core needs of most agencies, and acts as more of a strategic partner than a pure vendor. Innovations such as responsive designs and accessible websites become an automatic norm instead of a separate lift across 70 agencies. In this way the state of Georgia not only saves taxpayer dollars, but also benefits from a centralized strategy, shared enhancement roadmap, and shared innovation across agencies.
Director of Product for the state of Georgia’s enterprise Drupal platform.
My team at GeorgiaGov Interactive is a division within a state agency
Primary focus is in providing an website services for state entities
agencies provide information and services to constituents
often with limited resources
The majority don’t specialize in IT
As you all know, maintaining website services requires a lot of resources and expertise.
traditional models - each agency has their own individual IT/Web department to support their website, OR
hire an external vendor to build & maintain for them
(with CONTENT being the area where each agency is the subject matter expert.)
this becomes a huge duplication of efforts when spread out across each agency
IT is not most agencies’ area of expertise, so strategy and usability often takes a back burner.
This is where we come in.
by consolidating the IT technology and skillset into a central platform
cost savings by
Meeting shared needs
central governance & best practice (strategy)
agencies focus on their area of expertise - their content
this model speeds innovation
we can prioritize an enhancement roadmap and do it ONCE to serve all these customers
more recent initiatives include…
cloud hosting and open source solutions take it a step further.
It furthers our cost savings, taps into community expertise, and allows us to react more quickly to security risks, changes in technology and innovation.
Our team doesn’t have to focus on a bottom line of making money. We can focus on how to best serve our agencies and - most importantly - all Georgians.
currently we provide these services for over 75 state websites
the online face of Georgia, representing the state - so you don’t have to know the inner workings of state gov’t to find the services you need.
Focusing on serving the community of Georgia
All of this is using tools developed by the open source community, serving the community of Georgia.
You can see why we love Open Source.
