Abstract:- The City of Los Angeles, with 4 million residents and nearly 50 million visitors annually moving across 469 square miles, is not only one of the most densely populated cities, it also hosts one of the largest, most complex city infrastructures in the world. 6,000 miles of sewer underlie 22,000 miles of paved streets, that connect over 4,500 intersections, 50,000 city connected street lights and 2,000,000 google/waze connected sensors. This network of people and infrastructure are connected through the data and the systems that support them. As data transforms from an unstructured asset into the organizational wisdom that can drive this Smart City, the City of Los Angeles and the Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti work to identify new technologies and strategies for managing and harnessing the growing amount of data available to inform decision-making.

The Web of Things enables embedded sensors to become easily deployed in urban areas for environmental monitoring such as air quality, electromagnetism, radiation, etc. In this presentation, we propose an eco-system for urban computing which combines the concept of the Web of Things, together with big data analysis and event processing, towards the vision of smarter cities that offer real-time information to their habitants about the urban environment. We touch upon near real-time web-based discovery of sensory services, citizen participation, semantic technologies and mobile computing, helping people to take more informed everyday decisions when interacting with their urban landscape. We then present a case study where we demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of this eco-system to the everyday lives of citizens.

Async in .NET
Async code allows long-running operations like network and file access to execute without blocking the UI thread. There have been several approaches to async programming in .NET including the Async Programming Model (APM), Event-based Async Pattern (EAP), and Task Parallel Library. The newest approach is to use async and await keywords which allow suspending methods until async operations complete and make control flow easier to reason about.
Give your web apps some backbone
The document discusses the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern and how Backbone.js implements it for single-page web applications. MVC originated in the 1970s and separates an application into three responsibilities - the model manages the data, view displays it, and controller handles user input. Parallel Processing
Manufacturers have hit limits for single-core processors due to physical constraints, so parallel processing using multiple smaller cores is now common. The .NET framework includes classes like Task Parallel Library (TPL) and Parallel LINQ (PLINQ) that make it easy to take advantage of multi-core systems while abstracting thread management. TPL allows executing code asynchronously using tasks, which can run in parallel and provide callbacks to handle completion and errors. PLINQ allows parallelizing LINQ queries.
Node.js
Node.js is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 engine that allows JavaScript to be run on the server-side. It uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient, especially for real-time applications with heavy network use. While it shares a language with client-side JavaScript, Node.js is meant for server-side applications and not in the browser.

Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

- 5. Combination of Hack and Marathon Competition for teams to create “something” with a restricted set of resources Usually has one or more restrictions Time Subject (language, operating system, application, API, subject matter, demographic) Goal is to demonstrate an idea using software
- 6. A part of the HackDays.ca non- profit, volunteer-run organization Have organized 2 hackathons with over 30 attendees and created 30 applications Approximately half of those applications were created using City of Regina Open Data
