An Environmental Chargeback for Data Center and Cloud Computing ConsumersEdward Curry
Government, business, and the general public increasingly agree that the polluter should pay. Carbon dioxide and environmental damage are considered viable chargeable commodities. The net effect of this for data center and cloud computing operators is that they should look to “chargeback” the environmental impacts of their services to the consuming end-users. An environmental chargeback model can have a positive effect on environmental impacts by linking consumers to the indirect impacts of their usage, facilitating clearer understanding of the impact of their actions. In this paper we motivate the need for environmental chargeback mechanisms. The environmental chargeback model is described including requirements, methodology for definition, and environmental impact allocation strategies. The paper details a proof-of-concept within an operational data center together with discussion on experiences gained and future research directions.

Open Data Engagement - Using Open Data w3c Workshop Tim Davies
The document announces a workshop on June 19-20, 2012 at the European Commission's Albert Borschette Conference Center in Brussels. The workshop will focus on using open data for policy modeling, citizen empowerment, and data journalism. It provides background information on challenges and opportunities related to open data use, engagement, and building complementary systems around open data.
This document discusses different analytics tools for marketing and advertising requirements. It compares paid vs free tools and outlines key factors to consider such as business type, legal risks, integration capabilities, service and support offerings. The panel then provides examples from Budget Direct's experience using Omniture tools for cross-channel campaign measurement and leveraging customer data insights. Integration of tools and a focus on innovation is highlighted as important for maximizing ROI and marketing effectiveness.
The document discusses a thesis proposal about designing an open data system for providing Dutch public transport and geospatial data. The proposal identifies problems with current systems that prevent this data from being reused by businesses. It will analyze stakeholders, business cases, and technical requirements to design a new business model and data warehouse architecture that makes this government data freely available in a structured, machine-readable format. This aims to unlock its economic potential and enable its use by operators, businesses, and travelers.
Datalicious is a data marketing agency that was founded in late 2007. Smarter Planet: How Big Data changes our worldKim Escherich
This document discusses how big data is transforming our world through the increasing instrumentation, interconnection, and intelligence of people, processes, and things. It notes that by 2015, there will be over 50 billion connected devices and over 80% of all available data will be uncertain. The document highlights opportunities that big data creates, such as analyzing information in motion, extreme volumes of information, and managing and planning with data. It also discusses challenges like verifying the veracity of data. Overall, the summary highlights how big data is creating new opportunities through the increasing connections between people, processes, and things.
The End of the Wild-West of Data – Relevance and Regulation: the Cornerstones...auexpo Conference
1) Big data is getting exponentially larger each year due to growth in social media, e-commerce, mobile devices, and the internet of things. However, the quality and relevance of data is more important than just the quantity.
2) When data is enriched by linking it to other contextual data sources and then visualized effectively, it can provide meaningful insights. However, regulations and privacy concerns must also be adequately addressed.
3) While big data can improve efficiency and business strategies, its primary benefit should be better customer service, experiences, and identification of new products/services. End user trust and perception of privacy is paramount.
Information is the principle driver of competitive advantage. How it is collected, analysed and communicated determines our success. No single resource is more critical to organisational survival.
The amount of data in the world is exponentially increasing, to a point where companies capture significant amounts of information about their customers, suppliers, and operations. Millions of networked sensors are being embedded in everything from mobile phones to cars. Social networks and location data from mobile devices will continue to fuel this exponential data growth. These huge data pools are commonly being referred to as "big data".
This talk examines how analytics and big data are exploiting information to drive competitive advantage.

Open data, open innovation, and cloud computing can provide significant benefits but expectations are changing. Citizens and workers expect personalized services, engagement, tools for collaboration and work style, and respect for privacy and security. Leaders expect to consult constituents anywhere, gain insights and manage performance. These trends can be exploited by opening government data through the cloud, which provides a low-cost way to build applications, access data easily, and stimulate public innovation. Microsoft's open government data initiative leverages the cloud to provide open APIs, scale, and reliability for open data portals.

This document discusses smart analytics and big data. It begins by defining the 5 V's of big data: volume, velocity, variety, veracity, and value. It then discusses how analytics can provide competitive advantages for organizations and how the percentage of organizations realizing this advantage has increased significantly in recent years. The rest of the document discusses IBM's work in areas like smarter cities, smart service systems, and T-shaped professionals who have expertise across multiple domains. It provides examples of the large amounts of data being generated and concludes with a discussion of modeling holistic service systems at different levels from an individual to the entire planet.
In the Web of Things initiative, we propose to make smart things first-class citizens of the World Wide Web. This allows to apply widely used Web mechanisms (bookmarking, browsing,...) to things and to use physical devices just like any other service on the Web. In the talk, some of the prototypes that we have been building in our lab are presented. We also ask what will be the "next big thing" in connecting and mashing up real-time, real-world services.

This document discusses big data and its growth. It notes that in 2000, 2 exabytes of new data were produced, while in 2011 1.8 zettabytes of new data were produced. By 2020, data production is expected to grow 40 times to 35 zettabytes. The traditional 3-4 V's of big data (volume, velocity, variety, veracity) are expanding to 5-7 V's with the addition of viscosity, virality, and value. Examples of big data use cases include sensor data from CERN and jet engines, social media data from Twitter, and transactional data from Walmart.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs
