- JEFF: So how does badging fit into workforce development? The whole digital badges movement can trace back to the accomplishment badges for Xbox that Microsoft introduced around 2005… so it’s been going on for awhile. Open Badges 1.0 was released by Mozilla in 2012, and since then there have been something north of 11 million individual badges created and out there in the wild. Mostly by education providers. And yet industry hasn’t really embraced them… why not?
- DAVE: what’s the problem? One issue seems to be that a lot of the badges aren’t tied to defined competencies – so they aren’t particularly meaningful to industry. (speak to the notion of “digital dog biscuits”
- One of the other issues is that industry – particular larger employers – use software to screen resumés for key words. These programs help filter out resumés to reduce the number of candidates. They tend to be focused on traditional credentials – degrees, diplomas, etc… or on specific job titles. To my understanding – they don’t look for badges – maybe because there are so many of them out there, and because there’s no criteria for rating or ranking particular badges in terms of the specific skills they embody. So employers aren’t ASKING for badges in job postings.
- DAVE: Industry can do 2 things to change this: first, it’s up to industry to start defining the criteria/competencies that need to be demonstrated for particular badges to be awarded – this is part of the larger national framework discussion that comes later in the day!
- JEFF: Second, I think it’s absolutely imperative that HR (and operations?) people start becoming educated on what badges are, how to use them, and start asking for/honouring badges in their hiring and internal employee development practices.
- Open Badges, Open Pathways, Credential Engine - new open standards that allow us to tie badges together in coherent and meaningful ways … both launch this fall.
