1) The document discusses how gossip and online social networking can serve as "social glue" to bind people together, like glue binds physical materials.
2) It describes a pilot program called NASAsphere that used an online social network to enable collaboration and knowledge sharing across NASA's geographically dispersed workforce.
3) The pilot was successful, with participation eventually including someone from each NASA center, and a majority of participants recommending the agency adopt it more broadly.
This document discusses how communities work and brands' participation in communities. It provides an overview of how tribal behavior has evolved from pre-industrial to post-industrial to today. People now belong to many online tribes through social media. Communities fulfill various needs like education, finding a sense of belonging, and gaining social currency. Brands can participate by feeding a community's common interests but should never pose as regular contributors. The best practices for brands engaging with communities include observing communities first before initiating any programs and ensuring community engagement is a long-term relationship.

Green Turbine Ivey Presentation November 18, 2009robsklein
Green Turbine has developed a patented technology that converts waste heat into electricity. Their system captures heat emitted by industrial customers and uses it to power a turbine and generate electricity. This process turns what would otherwise be pollution into a revenue stream. They are seeking $5 million in financing to commercialize their 1-50 kW product offering and expand their business. Their financial projections show rapid revenue and unit sales growth, reaching profitability in 2013. Management has extensive experience in cleantech startups and building successful businesses.

Harnessing the 'Bang': from Digital Disruption to Digital TransformationStephen Huppert
This document summarizes Stephen Huppert's presentation on harnessing digital disruption and digital transformation. It discusses how exponential technologies like artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and big data are enabling disruptors to quickly scale by leveraging digital platforms and resources outside their organizations. Examples are provided of how companies like Uber, Facebook, and Airbnb have become large by focusing on these strategies rather than owning traditional assets. The presentation argues that businesses must focus on the customer interface to survive increasing digital disruption.
Here are the key steps in implementing a knowledge management project:
1. Identify a specific problem, process or area for improvement within the organization that knowledge management can address. Starting with a focused project scope allows testing solutions on a smaller scale before broader rollout.
2. Map out the current knowledge flows and gaps related to the target area. Conduct interviews and analyze workflows to understand how knowledge is created, shared and utilized currently.
3. Define objectives and expected benefits. Be clear on what problem the project aims to solve and how success will be measured both quantitatively and qualitatively.
4. Select appropriate tools and technologies. Determine what platforms are needed to capture, codify and distribute knowledge most effectively for the target users

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
