Artificial Intelligence for Societal Impact
Advances in machine learning have impacted our daily and work lives and we see numerous applications of these technologies in online products and services. Through our work at Microsoft Research India, we are finding that ML can have an equally transformative effect on societally important problems such as healthcare, public awareness and education. This talk discusses the potentials and challenges of using AI for societal impact projects and presents two case studies—helping health workers ensure adherence to tuberculosis medication and on enabling better online support for mental health.

1) It is not clear what the gap is. Why does this research need to be done? What has been done so far and how will this project help to close that gap? You cite one study by Bowdoin which clearly stated that PCMH does not affect expenditures or care. So, how is this a gap?
2) You need to provide scientific citations for your statements. You cannot rely on CDC and other websites because they are not peer-reviewed and are less reliable. Offhand, you have very few citations to your work.
3) You need to proofread your work or have somebody else proofread it. You have numerous errors throughout, and it is not the role of me or the rest of the committee to fix these for you. They detract from your overall writing.

Abstract: In a connected care environment, more citizens are engaging in their health care through
mobile apps and social media tools. Given this growing health care engagement, it is important for
health care professionals to have the knowledge and skills to evaluate and recommend appropriate
digital tools. The purpose of this article is to identify and review criteria or instruments that can be
used to evaluate mobile apps and social media. The analysis will review current literature as well
as literature designed by professional health care organizations. This review will facilitate health
care professionals’ assessment of mobile apps and social media tools that may be pertinent to their
patient population. The review will also highlight strategies which a health care system can use to

Abstract: In a connected care environment, more citizens are engaging in their health care through
mobile apps and social media tools. Given this growing health care engagement, it is important for
health care professionals to have the knowledge and skills to evaluate and recommend appropriate
digital tools. The purpose of this article is to identify and review criteria or instruments that can be
used to evaluate mobile apps and social media. The analysis will review current literature as well
as literature designed by professional health care organizations. This review will facilitate health
care professionals’ assessment of mobile apps and social media tools that may be pertinent to their
patient population. The review will also highlight strategies which a health care system can use to
provide guidance in recommending mobile apps and social media tools for their patients, families,
and caregivers.
