- 6. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused substance among youth in the United States. Teens often think many more of their peers drink alcohol than actually do. The earlier a teen begins using alcohol, the more likely they are to be dependent on alcohol later in life. Because the teen brain is still developing, alcohol is particularly harmful to teens and can have lifelongeffects. DRINKING FACTS:
