Book Study Update The book that was chosen for my book study was Blythe s(1999), Akenfield:
Portrait of an English Village. I have chosen this book because of my many connections to
England. Several years ago, I was provided the opportunity to undertake graduate studies at
Westfield House, and attached House of Fitzwilliam College which is part of Cambridge
University. During my time in Cambridge, I was able to travel the country and visit many of
the places my ancestors called home. Having a cousin who still resides in Kettering, due North
of London, and parents who have just retired from living in Wales, I have a long appreciation for
the people and heritage of this small country. It is these appreciations that have lead me to my
choice of Blythe s (1999) book. After having ordered the book through Amazon, I finally received
my copy on Friday. I have been able to navigate through the introduction and first two chapters of
the book. Akenfield, is not the name of an actual village, but is rather a pen name given to this
East Anglian village as a means of protecting the identities of those involved in the study (Blythe,

On January 16, 1920 the United States went dry. The 18th Amendment was fully in effect and the
country would test this Noble Experiment for the next thirteen years until its repeal in 1933. It is
the only amendment to ever be repealed partly for all the havoc it created. During the 1930 s
Prohibition had caused an increase of crime, higher consumption of alcohol and weakened the
economy.
This movement was supported partly because people thought drinking was a cause of corruption
and was aimed to improve lives. All breweries, distilleries, and saloons were forced to shut down
immediately. The purpose of this law was to ban the manufacture, sale, or transportation of

When prohibition took effect, there was total destruction of the brewing and distilling industry
(Blocker). The closing of breweries, distilleries and saloons led to the elimination of thousands
of jobs, and in turn, thousands more jobs were eliminated for barrel makers, truckers, waiters,
and other related trades. The hope was that revenue from alcohol would shift towards other
businesses instead the opposite happened, having a terrible effect on society (Blocker). One of
the most profound effects of Prohibition was on government tax revenues. Before Prohibition,
many states relied heavily on excise taxes on liquor sales to fund their budgets. In New York,
almost 75% of the state s revenue was derived from liquor taxes (Lerner). With Prohibition in
effect, that revenue was immediately lost. At the national level, Prohibition cost the federal
government a total of $11 billion in lost tax revenue, while costing over $300 million to enforce
(Lerner). The Great Depression was chiefly responsible for the end of prohibition. From 1930 to
1931, income tax revenues fell by 15 percent. In 1932 they fell another 37 percent; 1932 income
tax revenues were 46 percent lower than just two years earlier (Lerner). And by 1933 they were

Maria Montessori felt the teacher was crucial to the development of children. However, she saw the
teacher s role as being very different than it is in traditional education. According to Montessori, the
teacher s main goal is to light the flame of intelligence (Montessori, The Absorbent Mind, p.266) in
the student. The teacher is to be a guide, an inspiration and once the flame is lit, to disappear into
the environment. The focus in a Montessori classroom is on children learning, not on teachers
teaching.
To that end, my primary role as a Montessori teacher, is that of an observer. Through daily
observation and documentation of students progress, I determine when and if a child needs further
instruction and/or support in any given subject. Observation allows me to determine when a child
is ready for new challenges and to scaffold the child from one activity and level to the next. I am
observing to see the true nature of the children, how they interact with people and the environment,
what drives each one, the children s strengths and weaknesses to determine how to nurture each
child s spirit.
At the same time, I am observing the classroom environment. I am observing that the materials

Workers put together a whole dummy oil dock near Dover made from sewage pipes, camouflage

Texting and driving has become a recent issue in today s world. Many teens, as well as adults,
have formed a habit of texting while driving. Texting while driving is distracting and the
possibilities of getting into a car accident while texting and driving are higher than if you are not.
Texting while driving has gotten so ridiculous the government has realized this is an ongoing
problem that is causing accidents. In attempting to prevent this, new laws have been passed,
making the use of cell phones while driving a car, illegal. However, too many people do not
respect or pay attention to this law which put many people lives at risk. There are several
disadvantages of texting while driving, including jail time/prison, fatal crashes, and loss of lives.

The Roman Catholic Church responded treatment of Luther, Huguenots in France, relationship with
the Holy Roman Emperor, the Jesuits and the Council of Trent, treatment of Galileo and other

Tuesday November 4th, 2008. All across the country, eyes are fixated on television screens.
Everyone waits in anticipation. The race is almost called. Then, after hours of waiting, the 47th
President of the United States of America is announced and simultaneously history is made. A
Black man, Barack Obama, has just been elected. However in the time leading up to the election as
well as the years that would follow, Obama faces much animosity, criticism, and hatred. In the
article, The Slow Motion Lynching of President Barack Obama, Frank Schaeffer argues that Obama
is being lynched, unfairly attacked and made victim in large part to the country s racism.
Although I agree that President Barack Obama has been unjustly criticized and attacked,
Schaeffer only names race as the fuel for such criticism and fails to mention other contributing
factors to the lynching of the President. Schaeffer states, President Obama has been lied about,

In 2001 there was a movie released called Black Hawk Down. This movie was based on a true
story of the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. This battle takes place in Somalia. The movie depicts
this battle pretty accurately from who died and the mistake that were made in the mission plan.
The operation was supposed to be easy and go smoothly but like most plans things didn t go as
they planned. If there wasn t any mistakes made during this operation then there wouldn t have
been a movie made after it. The movie got its title because during the operation there were two
black hawk helicopter shot down and most of the time the soldiers were trying to get to the

hold off until the help came. There was only one survivor of this crash and that was the pilot and

Existentialism became an essential part of the 20th century as humanity suffered through great
challenges during that time. The threat of the nuclear bombing, destruction of humanity and
