This document summarizes a study on the diversity of software package popularity metrics using data from the npm registry. The study analyzed 9 different metrics for 175,774 packages to determine how correlated the metrics were. Abstract: Software systems often leverage on open source software libraries to reuse functionalities. Such libraries are readily available through software package managers like npm for JavaScript. Due to the huge amount of packages available in such package distributions, developers often decide to rely on or contribute to a software package based on its popularity. Moreover, it is a common practice for researchers to depend on popularity metrics for data sampling and choosing the right candidates for their studies. However, the meaning of popularity is relative and can be defined and measured in a diversity of ways, that might produce different outcomes even when considered for the same studies. In this paper, we show evidence of how different is the meaning of popularity in software engineering research. Moreover, we empirically analyse the relationship between different software popularity measures. As a case study, for a large dataset of 175k npm packages, we computed and extracted 9 different popularity metrics from three open source tracking systems: libraries.io, npmjs.com and GitHub. We found that indeed popularity can be measured with different unrelated metrics, each metric can be defined within a specific context. This indicates a need for a generic framework that would use a portfolio of popularity metrics drawing from different concepts.

FOOPS!: An Ontology Pitfall Scanner for the FAIR principles
This document describes FOOPS, an ontology validation service that checks ontologies for adherence to the FAIR principles. FOOPS tests ontologies against criteria related to findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability. It provides explanations for test failures to help users improve their ontologies. FOOPS validation results include an overall FAIRness score and coverage of FAIR categories to assess ontology quality, though there is no single threshold for what makes an ontology fully FAIR. The document demonstrates FOOPS and lists the types of tests it supports under each FAIR category. It invites feedback to help further improve FOOPS.

The ability to recreate computational results with minimal effort and actionable metrics provides a solid foundation for scientific research and software development. When people can replicate an analysis at the touch of a button using open-source software, open data, and methods to assess and compare proposals, it significantly eases verification of results, engagement with a diverse range of contributors, and progress. However, we have yet to fully achieve this; there are still many sociotechnical frictions.
Inspired by David Donoho's vision, this talk aims to revisit the three crucial pillars of frictionless reproducibility (data sharing, code sharing, and competitive challenges) with the perspective of deep software variability.
Our observation is that multiple layers — hardware, operating systems, third-party libraries, software versions, input data, compile-time options, and parameters — are subject to variability that exacerbates frictions but is also essential for achieving robust, generalizable results and fostering innovation. I will first review the literature, providing evidence of how the complex variability interactions across these layers affect qualitative and quantitative software properties, thereby complicating the reproduction and replication of scientific studies in various fields.
I will then present some software engineering and AI techniques that can support the strategic exploration of variability spaces. These include the use of abstractions and models (e.g., feature models), sampling strategies (e.g., uniform, random), cost-effective measurements (e.g., incremental build of software configurations), and dimensionality reduction methods (e.g., transfer learning, feature selection, software debloating).
I will finally argue that deep variability is both the problem and solution of frictionless reproducibility, calling the software science community to develop new methods and tools to manage variability and foster reproducibility in software systems.

Text search may be used for fault localization in either of the following ways. We can search a repository of past bugs with the bug description to find similar bugs and recommend the source files that were modified to fix those bugs. Alternately, we can directly search the code repository to find source files that share words with the bug report text. Few interesting questions come to mind when we consider applying these text-based search techniques in real projects. For example, would searching on past fixed bugs yield better results than searching on code? What is the accuracy one can expect? Would giving preference to code words in the bug report better the search results? In this paper, we apply variants of text-search on four open source projects and compare the impact of different design considerations on search efficacy.

Big Data: the weakest link

Abstract. In most fields, computational models and data analysis have become a significant part of how research is performed, in addition to the more traditional theory and experiment. Mathematics is no exception to this trend. While the system of publication and credit for theory and experiment (journals and books, often monographs) has developed and has become an expected part of the culture, how research is shared and how candidates for hiring, promotion are evaluated, software (and data) do not have the same history. A group working as part of the FORCE11 community developed a set of principles for software citation that fit software into the journal citation system, allow software to be published and then cited, and there are now over 50,000 DOIs that have been issued for software. However, some challenges remain, including: promoting the idea of software citation to developers and users; collaborating with publishers to ensure that systems collect and retain required metadata; ensuring that the rest of the scholarly infrastructure, particu- larly indexing sites, include software; working with communities so that software efforts count; and understanding how best to cite software that has not been published.

Search Solutions 2011: Successful Enterprise Search By Design
When your colleagues say they want Google, they don’t mean the Google Search Appliance. They mean the Google Search user experience: pervasive, expedient and delivering the information that they need. Successful enterprise search does not start with the application features, is not part of the information architecture, does not come from a controlled vocabulary and does not emerge on its own from the developers. It requires enterprise-specific data mining, enterprise-specific user-centered design and fine tuning to turn “search sucks” into search success within the firewall. For Big Data applications, there is a lack of any gold standards for "good analysis" or methods to assess our certification programs. Hence, we are still in the dark about whether or not our human analysts are making the best use possible of the tools of Big Data. While much progress has been made in the systems aspects of Big Data, certain critical human-centered aspects remain an open issue. Regardless of the sophistication of the analysis tools and environment, all that architecture can still be used incorrectly by users. If this issue was confined to a small number of inexperienced users, then it could be addressed via process improvements such as better training. But is it? What do we know about our analysts? Where are the studies that mine the people doing the data miners?
This presentation offers some preliminary results on tools that combine ECL with other methods that recognize the code generated by experienced or inexperienced developers. While the results are preliminary, they do raise the possibility that we can better characterize what it means to be experienced (or inexperienced) at Big Data applications.

Software Repositories for Research -- An Environmental Scan
Presented at the Software Preservation Network Forum:
"We discuss the results of an environmental scan characterizing the current landscape of software repositories, hubs, and publication venues that are used in research and scholarships. The study aims to characterize the research and scholarship use cases supported by exemplar repositories, their models for sustainability, and the related key affordances, significant properties which the repository offers/maintains. We supplement this with a scan of funder and publisher policies toward software curation and citation; and a summary of key policy resources and guidelines. Using this environmental scan, we discuss a preliminary gap analysis. It hoped that by addressing these key questions, new insights will be provided into the types of decisions research Libraries can expect to make when designing future pilot software curation services."
Towards Reusable Research Software
An increasing number of researchers rely on computational methods to generate the results described in their publications. Research software created to this end is heterogeneous (e.g., scripts, libraries, packages, notebooks, etc.) and usually difficult to find, reuse, compare and understand due to its disconnected documentation (dispersed in manuals, readme files, web sites, and code comments) and a lack of structured metadata to describe it. In this talk I will describe the main challenges for finding, comparing and reusing research software, how structured metadata can help to address some of them, which are the best practices being proposed by the community; and current initiatives to aid their adoption by researchers within EOSC.
Impact: The talk addresses an important aspect of the EOSC infrastructure for quality research software by ensuring that software contributed to the EOSC ecosystem can be found, compared and reused by researchers. The talk also aims to address metadata quality of current research products, which is critical for successful adoption.

Prevalence and Evolution of License Violations in npm and RubyGems Dependency...
This document summarizes a study of license violations in the npm and RubyGems package dependency networks. The researchers analyzed over 750,000 npm packages and 95,000 RubyGems packages to determine: 1) the most prevalent licenses in each ecosystem, 2) the extent that direct dependencies rely on incompatible licenses, and 3) how license incompatibility spreads across indirect dependencies. They found that MIT and Apache licenses are most common, direct dependencies rarely have incompatible licenses, and GPL dependencies cause most indirect violations that decrease with deeper dependency levels.

Abstract. In most fields, computational models and data analysis have become a significant part of how research is performed, in addition to the more traditional theory and experiment. Mathematics is no exception to this trend. While the system of publication and credit for theory and experiment (journals and books, often monographs) has developed and has become an expected part of the culture, how research is shared and how candidates for hiring, promotion are evaluated, software (and data) do not have the same history. A group working as part of the FORCE11 community developed a set of principles for software citation that fit software into the journal citation system, allow software to be published and then cited, and there are now over 50,000 DOIs that have been issued for software. However, some challenges remain, including: promoting the idea of software citation to developers and users; collaborating with publishers to ensure that systems collect and retain required metadata; ensuring that the rest of the scholarly infrastructure, particu- larly indexing sites, include software; working with communities so that software efforts count; and understanding how best to cite software that has not been published.

For Big Data applications, there is a lack of any gold standards for "good analysis" or methods to assess our certification programs. Hence, we are still in the dark about whether or not our human analysts are making the best use possible of the tools of Big Data. While much progress has been made in the systems aspects of Big Data, certain critical human-centered aspects remain an open issue. Regardless of the sophistication of the analysis tools and environment, all that architecture can still be used incorrectly by users. If this issue was confined to a small number of inexperienced users, then it could be addressed via process improvements such as better training. But is it? What do we know about our analysts? Where are the studies that mine the people doing the data miners?
This presentation offers some preliminary results on tools that combine ECL with other methods that recognize the code generated by experienced or inexperienced developers. While the results are preliminary, they do raise the possibility that we can better characterize what it means to be experienced (or inexperienced) at Big Data applications.

Software Repositories for Research -- An Environmental Scan
Presented at the Software Preservation Network Forum:
"We discuss the results of an environmental scan characterizing the current landscape of software repositories, hubs, and publication venues that are used in research and scholarships. The study aims to characterize the research and scholarship use cases supported by exemplar repositories, their models for sustainability, and the related key affordances, significant properties which the repository offers/maintains. We supplement this with a scan of funder and publisher policies toward software curation and citation; and a summary of key policy resources and guidelines. Using this environmental scan, we discuss a preliminary gap analysis. It hoped that by addressing these key questions, new insights will be provided into the types of decisions research Libraries can expect to make when designing future pilot software curation services."
Towards Reusable Research Software
An increasing number of researchers rely on computational methods to generate the results described in their publications. Research software created to this end is heterogeneous (e.g., scripts, libraries, packages, notebooks, etc.) and usually difficult to find, reuse, compare and understand due to its disconnected documentation (dispersed in manuals, readme files, web sites, and code comments) and a lack of structured metadata to describe it. In this talk I will describe the main challenges for finding, comparing and reusing research software, how structured metadata can help to address some of them, which are the best practices being proposed by the community; and current initiatives to aid their adoption by researchers within EOSC.
Impact: The talk addresses an important aspect of the EOSC infrastructure for quality research software by ensuring that software contributed to the EOSC ecosystem can be found, compared and reused by researchers. The talk also aims to address metadata quality of current research products, which is critical for successful adoption.

On Popularity and Quality Metrics of npm Packages
This document reports on an empirical study of the relationship between popularity and quality of packages in the Node Package Manager (NPM) ecosystem. It finds that while software popularity and quality are weakly correlated, maintenance has little impact on popularity. Only a small percentage of packages are deprecated but still used. Front-end packages tend to be more popular compared to other types of packages. The study analyzed metadata from over 1 million NPM packages to address research questions about these relationships.

This study analyzed vulnerabilities in the npm and RubyGems dependency networks. The researchers found that the number of vulnerabilities and vulnerable packages is increasing over time. Vulnerabilities in npm packages are disclosed and fixed faster than those in RubyGems. A single vulnerable package can expose many dependent packages. Over time, packages accumulate vulnerabilities from transitive dependencies, though this effect was mitigated for npm by semantic versioning constraints. The prevalence of vulnerabilities indicates continued effort is needed from all parties to improve software supply chain security.

Abstract:
Container-based solutions, such as Docker, have become increasingly relevant in the software industry to facilitate deploying and maintaining software systems. Little is known, however, about how outdated such containers are at the moment of their release or when used in production. We address this question, by measuring and comparing five different dimensions of technical lag that Docker container images can face: package lag, time lag, version lag, vulnerability lag, and bug lag. We instantiate the formal technical lag framework from previous work to operationalise these different dimensions of lag on Docker Hub images based on the Debian Linux distribution. We carry out a large-scale empirical study of such technical lag, over a three-year period, in a large dataset of Debian images. We compare the differences between official and community images, as well as between images with different Debian distributions: OldStable, Stable or Testing. The analysis shows that the different dimensions of technical lag are complementary, providing multiple insights. Our research offers empirical evidence that developers and deployers of Docker images can benefit from identifying to which extent their containers are outdated according to the considered dimensions, and mitigate the risks related to such outdatedness.

An Empirical Analysis of Technical Lag in npm Package Dependencies
Software library packages are constantly evolving and increasing in number. Not updating to the latest available release of dependent libraries may negatively affect software development by not benefiting from new functionality, vulnerability and bug fixes available in more recent versions. On the other hand, automatically updating to the latest release may introduce incompatibility issues. We introduce a technical lag metric for dependencies in package networks, in order to assess how outdated a software package is compared to the latest available releases of its dependencies. We empirically analyse the package update practices and technical lag for the npm distribution of JavaScript packages. Our results show a strong presence of technical lag caused by the specific use of dependency constraints, indicating a reluctance to update dependencies to avoid backward incompatible changes

The pathway(s) to seeding the massive black holes (MBHs) that exist at the heart of galaxies in the present and distant Universe remains an unsolved problem. Here we categorise, describe and quantitatively discuss the formation pathways of both light and heavy seeds. We emphasise that the most recent computational models suggest that rather than a bimodal-like mass spectrum between light and heavy seeds with light at one end and heavy at the other that instead a continuum exists. Light seeds being more ubiquitous and the heavier seeds becoming less and less abundant due the rarer environmental conditions required for their formation. We therefore examine the different mechanisms that give rise to different seed mass spectrums. We show how and why the mechanisms that produce the heaviest seeds are also among the rarest events in the Universe and are hence extremely unlikely to be the seeds for the vast majority of the MBH population. We quantify, within the limits of the current large uncertainties in the seeding processes, the expected number densities of the seed mass spectrum. We argue that light seeds must be at least 103 to 105 times more numerous than heavy seeds to explain the MBH population as a whole. Based on our current understanding of the seed population this makes heavy seeds (Mseed > 103 M⊙) a significantly more likely pathway given that heavy seeds have an abundance pattern than is close to and likely in excess of 10−4 compared to light seeds. Finally, we examine the current state-of-the-art in numerical calculations and recent observations and plot a path forward for near-future advances in both domains.

Immersive Learning That Works: Research Grounding and Paths Forward
We will metaverse into the essence of immersive learning, into its three dimensions and conceptual models. This approach encompasses elements from teaching methodologies to social involvement, through organizational concerns and technologies. Challenging the perception of learning as knowledge transfer, we introduce a 'Uses, Practices & Strategies' model operationalized by the 'Immersive Learning Brain' and ‘Immersion Cube’ frameworks. This approach offers a comprehensive guide through the intricacies of immersive educational experiences and spotlighting research frontiers, along the immersion dimensions of system, narrative, and agency. Our discourse extends to stakeholders beyond the academic sphere, addressing the interests of technologists, instructional designers, and policymakers. We span various contexts, from formal education to organizational transformation to the new horizon of an AI-pervasive society. This keynote aims to unite the iLRN community in a collaborative journey towards a future where immersive learning research and practice coalesce, paving the way for innovative educational research and practice landscapes.
Authoring a personal GPT for your research and practice: How we created the Q...
Thematic analysis in qualitative research is a time-consuming and systematic task, typically done using teams. Team members must ground their activities on common understandings of the major concepts underlying the thematic analysis, and define criteria for its development. However, conceptual misunderstandings, equivocations, and lack of adherence to criteria are challenges to the quality and speed of this process. Given the distributed and uncertain nature of this process, we wondered if the tasks in thematic analysis could be supported by readily available artificial intelligence chatbots. Our early efforts point to potential benefits: not just saving time in the coding process but better adherence to criteria and grounding, by increasing triangulation between humans and artificial intelligence. This tutorial will provide a description and demonstration of the process we followed, as two academic researchers, to develop a custom ChatGPT to assist with qualitative coding in the thematic data analysis process of immersive learning accounts in a survey of the academic literature: QUAL-E Immersive Learning Thematic Analysis Helper. In the hands-on time, participants will try out QUAL-E and develop their ideas for their own qualitative coding ChatGPT. Participants that have the paid ChatGPT Plus subscription can create a draft of their assistants. The organizers will provide course materials and slide deck that participants will be able to utilize to continue development of their custom GPT. The paid subscription to ChatGPT Plus is not required to participate in this workshop, just for trying out personal GPTs during it.
The debris of the ‘last major merger’ is dynamically young
The Milky Way’s (MW) inner stellar halo contains an [Fe/H]-rich component with highly eccentric orbits, often referred to as the
‘last major merger.’ Hypotheses for the origin of this component include Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), where the progenitor
collided with the MW proto-disc 8–11 Gyr ago, and the Virgo Radial Merger (VRM), where the progenitor collided with the
MW disc within the last 3 Gyr. These two scenarios make different predictions about observable structure in local phase space,
because the morphology of debris depends on how long it has had to phase mix. The recently identified phase-space folds in Gaia
DR3 have positive caustic velocities, making them fundamentally different than the phase-mixed chevrons found in simulations
at late times. Roughly 20 per cent of the stars in the prograde local stellar halo are associated with the observed caustics. Based
on a simple phase-mixing model, the observed number of caustics are consistent with a merger that occurred 1–2 Gyr ago.
We also compare the observed phase-space distribution to FIRE-2 Latte simulations of GSE-like mergers, using a quantitative
measurement of phase mixing (2D causticality). The observed local phase-space distribution best matches the simulated data
1–2 Gyr after collision, and certainly not later than 3 Gyr. This is further evidence that the progenitor of the ‘last major merger’
did not collide with the MW proto-disc at early times, as is thought for the GSE, but instead collided with the MW disc within
the last few Gyr, consistent with the body of work surrounding the VRM.

When I was asked to give a companion lecture in support of ‘The Philosophy of Science’ (https://shorturl.at/4pUXz) I decided not to walk through the detail of the many methodologies in order of use. Instead, I chose to employ a long standing, and ongoing, scientific development as an exemplar. And so, I chose the ever evolving story of Thermodynamics as a scientific investigation at its best.
Conducted over a period of >200 years, Thermodynamics R&D, and application, benefitted from the highest levels of professionalism, collaboration, and technical thoroughness. New layers of application, methodology, and practice were made possible by the progressive advance of technology. In turn, this has seen measurement and modelling accuracy continually improved at a micro and macro level.
Perhaps most importantly, Thermodynamics rapidly became a primary tool in the advance of applied science/engineering/technology, spanning micro-tech, to aerospace and cosmology. I can think of no better a story to illustrate the breadth of scientific methodologies and applications at their best.
