A teacher overheard a student whisper about how she was going to talk about using commas. To demonstrate their importance, she wrote the student's quote on the board without commas, which changed the meaning. She then added commas to clarify that the student said the teacher was silly, not that the student was silly. This showed the class how punctuation can alter a sentence's meaning.

- 2. Punctuation can oftensay quite a lot. One day, as a teacher walked into her classroom, she heard Tommy Andrews whisper to the boy next to him:
- 3. "Here is theteacher. I'll bet the silly cow is going to talk about putting in commas."
- 4. The teacher didn'tsay anything but she began to talk about putting in commas, and explained how important they could be. To show what she meant, she wrote the sentence on the blackboard:
- 5. "Tommy Andrews saysthe teacher is a silly cow." The class laughed and Tommy Andrews looked very red.
- 6. "Now," said theteacher, "I'll show how important commas are." She put two commas into the sentence, and it now read: "Tommy Andrews, says the teacher, is a silly cow."
