The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece and were revived in the 19th century. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens in 1896. The Olympics have grown from 16 nations and 293 athletes in 1924 to 87 nations and 3,500 athletes in 2014. Key traditions of the ancient Games, like the Olympic flame and oath, were incorporated into the modern Olympics. The Olympic rings symbolize the five inhabited continents and the six colors appear on all national flags. Pierre de Coubertin is credited with reviving the Olympics and establishing the motto "Faster, Higher, Stronger." Winter Olympic sports featured at the 2014 Sochi Games included figure skating, skiing, snowboarding, bobsleigh and hockey.
