This presentation introduces technology and the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of it. How assistive technology hardware and software improve people's lives and give them so much freedom, regardless of their abilities. Next, it focuses on the cognitive issues and why UX Designers and Developers need to empathetic and consider specific points as they design and create accessible designs, also known as Universal Design. It closes with tips for designing with empathy and emphasizing the "Empathy is the next differentiator!"
Old presentations such as this are interesting to view - this presentation from 2010 makes little reference to the wide use of mobile devices, tablets or ebook readers.

This webinar will review causes of memory loss and discuss different kinds of memory. It will describe how a functioning memory enables people to accomplish daily life tasks. The webinar defines AT with respect to how improved memory relates to life functions such as communication, safety, making choices about life, and doing what person was once able to do. Pictures of low and high tech AT tools available for memory support across areas function in the home, in the community, at school, and in employment situations will be shown. This webinar is not targeted to a specific type of memory loss or target disability area. Information presented will include tools that will be useful for people of all ages who may be struggling with memory loss that affects their function in life activities.

Let’s take a quick trip across the sea to the halls of Black Hat. What made the training network tick? How was it created, who was attacking the network, and how was it defended? How do you keep the wired training network up and reliable when you have nearly two thousand people hammering on it? What tricks kept the wireless running for all those tweets?

Computer Access Tools for People with DisabiltiesATLA
Computers have become an integral tool in all of our lives, making things easier, faster, and more convenient. If we didn’t have our computers, we might be inconvenienced, but we would have alternatives. We’d go back to handwriting or typing, using the library, phonebook, maps, writing letters and talking on the phone, etc. But for people with a disability, the ability to access a computer may be their only way to learn new skills, participate in classroom activities, demonstrate their knowledge, work, and interact with other people. Use of the computer is essential for people with disabilities, and finding a reliable access method is the key to opening many doors - sometimes literally!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
