Dive into the world of Occupational and Health Management Safety Systems (OHMS) with a special focus on ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) compliance in this informative presentation.
The new standard is designed to help organisations around the world ensure the health and safety of the people who make their business possible.
This standard is set to replace the popular OHSAS 18001 standard, with the overall purpose remaining the improvement of occupational health and safety performance. ISO 45001 will more easily integrate with other ISO Management Systems standards including ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
ISO 45001 will require an organization to look beyond its immediate health and safety issues and take into account what the wider society expects of it. Organisations will have to think about their contractors and suppliers, as well as the effects their activities have on neighbouring communities.
As globalisation and global trade continue to escalate, organisations’ stakeholders are expecting organisations to be ethical in every aspect of their business, especially in the way they treat employees. ISO 45001 will give organisations an internationally recognised occupational health and safety standard to follow. This standard provides the specification for formal, systematic analysis and management of risk, management of regulatory compliance, promotion of safer work practices, and evaluation of occupational health and safety performance. This systematic approach facilitates a decrease in the number of incidents and ultimately less disruption to business.
In order to comply with international needs and requirements, more than 50 countries and organisations including the International Labour Organization (ILO) have been involved in the creation of ISO 45001. The aim is to provide a tool that can be used by any organisation, in any industry, anywhere in the world.
Organisations currently certified to OHSAS 18001, can remain so through the transition period offered after the publication of the ISO 45001 standard.
ISO 45001 is the world’s international standard for occupational health and safety, issued to protect employees and visitors from work-related accidents and diseases. ISO 45001 certification was developed to mitigate any factors that can cause employees and businesses irreparable harm.
Its standards are the result of great effort by a committee of health and safety management experts who looked closely at a number of other approaches to system management — including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. In addition, ISO 45001 was designed to take other existing occupational health and safety standards, such as OHSAS 18001, into account — as well as the ILO’s labor standards, conventions and safety guidelines.
This implementation guide will help you run through the benefits, PDCA Cycle, Annex SL structure in detail for implementing ISO 45001.

IQ Academy Lunch & Learn Webinar | ISO 45001 - Our Implementation Experience ...IQ_UK
Over 7,600 people die each day from work-related accidents or diseases - that’s over 2.78 million every year. The burden of occupational injuries and diseases is significant, both for employers and the wider economy, resulting in losses from early retirements, staff absence and rising insurance premiums.
To combat the problem, ISO has developed a new standard, ISO 45001, occupational health and safety management systems, that will help organisations reduce this burden by providing a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions, all over the world.
Our IQ Academy webinar for March welcomed Wayne Darwin of Tarmac, Senior HSE Manager responsible for assurance and governance to provide an insight into the implementation experience of ISO 45001. Wayne has previously held operational and SHEQ roles with Hanson and Babcock and is currently involved in a project team implementing ISO 45001 across the Tarmac business.
During the bitesize lunch & learn session Wayne takes us through what ISO 45001 is, its benefits and purpose, his experience and approach to implementing the standard along with the opportunities and learning outcomes that have arisen from this.

Lifting the Corporate Veil. Power Point Presentationseri bangash
"Lifting the Corporate Veil" is a legal concept that refers to the judicial act of disregarding the separate legal personality of a corporation or limited liability company (LLC). Normally, a corporation is considered a legal entity separate from its shareholders or members, meaning that the personal assets of shareholders or members are protected from the liabilities of the corporation. However, there are certain situations where courts may decide to "pierce" or "lift" the corporate veil, holding shareholders or members personally liable for the debts or actions of the corporation.
Here are some common scenarios in which courts might lift the corporate veil:
Fraud or Illegality: If shareholders or members use the corporate structure to perpetrate fraud, evade legal obligations, or engage in illegal activities, courts may disregard the corporate entity and hold those individuals personally liable.
Undercapitalization: If a corporation is formed with insufficient capital to conduct its intended business and meet its foreseeable liabilities, and this lack of capitalization results in harm to creditors or other parties, courts may lift the corporate veil to hold shareholders or members liable.
Failure to Observe Corporate Formalities: Corporations and LLCs are required to observe certain formalities, such as holding regular meetings, maintaining separate financial records, and avoiding commingling of personal and corporate assets. If these formalities are not observed and the corporate structure is used as a mere façade, courts may disregard the corporate entity.
Alter Ego: If there is such a unity of interest and ownership between the corporation and its shareholders or members that the separate personalities of the corporation and the individuals no longer exist, courts may treat the corporation as the alter ego of its owners and hold them personally liable.
Group Enterprises: In some cases, where multiple corporations are closely related or form part of a single economic unit, courts may pierce the corporate veil to achieve equity, particularly if one corporation's actions harm creditors or other stakeholders and the corporate structure is being used to shield culpable parties from liability.

3. What is safety ?
Safety
Safety refers
to the state of
being
protected
from harm,
danger, or
risk.
4. Why we need safety ?
Bhopal Gas Tragedy, :
one of the most devastating industrial
accidents in history. It occurred on the night
of December 2-3, 1984, in Bhopal, Madhya
Pradesh, India. The disaster was caused by
the release of a highly toxic gas, methyl
isocyanate (MIC), from a pesticide plant
owned by Union Carbide India Limited
(UCIL)
it is estimated that at least 15,000 to 20,000
people died as a direct result of the gas leak.
5. The Chernobyl disaster :
one of the most catastrophic nuclear accidents
in history. It occurred on April 26, 1986, at the
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Pripyat, in
what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist
Republic, part of the Soviet Union. The
accident is considered the worst nuclear power
plant disaster to date in terms of its immediate
impact on human life and the long-term
environmental consequences.
it was estimated that the total number of
deaths directly attributed to the Chernobyl
disaster could reach up to 4,000.
6. OHSMS - Occupational Health and Safety
Management System
• An Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) is
a fundamental part of an organization's risk management strategy.
Implementing an OHSMS enables an organization to:
• Protect its workforce and others under its control
• Compliance with legal requirements
• Facilitate continual improvement
7. • Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS)
• Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS)
OHSAS 18001 - Occupational Health and Safety
Assessment Series
8. OHSAS 18001
OHSAS 18001 certification is the "Occupational/commercial Health and Safety"
standard published via British Standards Institute.
• The BSI published the OHSAS 18000 Series in 1999.
• The Series consisted of two specifications : 18001 provided requirements for an OHS
management system and 18002 gave implementation guidelines.
• Intended to help an organizations to control occupational health and safety risks.
• It was developed in response to widespread demand for a recognized standard
against which to be certified and assessed.
9. OHSAS 18001
It is a set of factors and conditions that impress the soundness and protection of all
people (employees, temporary workers, subcontractor employees, visitors,
customers, and anyone in the workplace) who are affected by the activities of an
organization.
• BSI (British Standards Institution) cancelled OHSAS 18001 to adopt ISO 45001.
• ISO 45001 was published in March 2018 by the International Organization for
Standardization. Organizations that are certified to OHSAS 18001 were able to
migrate to ISO 45001 by March 2021 to retain a recognized certification.
10. Principle of OHSAS
• The OHSAS 18001 is based on the principle of steady improvement and plans the
introduction of work safety and health protection management system.
• The principle of steady improvement is based on the PDCA cycle, also known as the
Deming wheel or the Shewhart cycle. PDCA/PDSA cycle is a continuous loop of
planning, doing, checking (or studying), and acting.
• provides a simple and effective approach for solving problems and managing change.
• The model is useful for testing improvement measures on a small scale before updating
procedures and working practices.
13. PDCA IN OH&S MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
*Plan ; Assess risk, identify applicable regulations
* Do ; Identify responsibility and accountability, training, communicate, control and
prepare for emergencies.
* Check; Monitor, Record, Audit (Check, Examination, Review, Assessment)
* Act to improve
14. Requirement and certification process of OHSAS 18001
The OHSAS 18001 certification is an international standard certification that provides a framework
to control, identify, and decrease the risks associated with health and safety within the workplace.
The certification process involves the following steps;
1.OH&S Policy: Creation of an OH&S policy.
2.Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Determining Controls: Identification of hazards
and risks associated with the workplace, assessment of the risks, and determining the controls to
mitigate the risks.
3.Legal and Other Requirements: Identification of legal and other requirements related to OH&S
and ensuring compliance with them.
15. Requirement and certification process of OHSAS 18001 contd…
5. Objectives and Programs: Establishment of OH&S objectives and programs to
achieve them.
6.Resources, Roles, Responsibility, Accountability, and Authority: Identification of
resources, roles, responsibility, accountability, and authority for OH&S management.
7.Competence, Training, and Awareness: Identification of competence requirements,
provision of training, and awareness programs for OH&S management.
8.Communication, Participation, and Consultation: Establishment of communication,
participation, and consultation processes for OH&S management
16. 9. Documentation and Record Control: Establishment of documentation and
record control procedures to meet OHSAS 18001 requirements.
10. Operational Control: Establishment of operational control procedures to
manage OH&S risks.
11. Emergency Preparedness and Response: Establishment of emergency
preparedness and response procedures to manage emergency situations related to
OH&S.
17. Benefits of OSHAS
The advantages of implementing OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health
and Safety Management Standard are:
• Reduction of work incidents
• Compliance with work safety regulations
• Prevention of ill health or work injuries
• Improvement of business credibility and brand image
• Improved feed-back from national and international market
• Increased access to public tenders
18. Benefits of OSHAS
• Improved relationships with national and local institutions
• Reduction of controls and facilities in obtaining administrative authorizations
• Demonstration of a reasonable awareness
• Meeting investor requirements by facilitating access to capital
• Attainment of more competitive insurance policies
• Improved staff relationships
19. ISO
• ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an independent, non-
governmental international organization with a membership of 168 national
standards bodies.
• ISO 9000 – Quality Management
• ISO 22000 – Food Safety Management
• ISO/IEC 27000 – Information Security Management Systems
• ISO 31000 – Risk Management
• ISO 45001-Occupational health
20. ISO 45001
• ISO 45001 is a global standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management
Systems that provides a practical solution to improve the safety and health of
both employees and other personnel. This ISO 45001 standard has been
designed to apply to any company regardless of its size, type and nature.
The ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
(OHSMS) training enables the organisation to improve its occupational health
and safety performance to prevent injury and ill-health.
21. ISO 45001 was developed to replace OHSAS 18001 and become the new
global standard for OSH management systems.
It is designed to improve the way organizations manage health and safety
risks, and provides practical solutions for worker safety,
The standard puts a greater emphasis on risk management, requiring
organizations to take a risk-based approach to proactively identify sources or
situations that have the potential to cause harm,
By implementing ISO 45001, organizations may be able to demonstrate
compliance with health and safety law.
22. Objectives
• The main objective of this standard is to help companies to adopt good practices
and encourage care aimed at the health and quality of life of workers. The
standard defines that organizations are fully responsible for the health of
their professionals, and must offer good working conditions to everyone.
23. Requirement and Certification process of ISO 45001
Obtaining ISO 45001 certification involves several steps,
including ;
learning about the standard,
performing a gap analysis and initial OH&S review and risk
analysis,
planning, educating the organization, designing and
documenting the OH&S management system,
developing an internal audit system,
developing a management review system,
and developing a procedure for reporting, investigating, and
taking action to determine and manage incidents and
nonconformities and corrective action
24. Requirement continue
Once the OH&S management system is in place, an organization can
schedule an audit with an accredited third-party certification body.
The certification body will review the organization's processes and
documentation to ensure compliance with the ISO 45001 standard.
If the organization meets the requirements, it will receive ISO 45001
certification.
The certification is valid for three years, and organizations must undergo
annual surveillance audits to maintain certification.
25. Benefits
Improve employee safety: The most obvious benefit of ISO 45001 is the
potential to reduce workplace illnesses and injuries. It gives your
organization the tools to save lives and prevent injuries.
Boost stakeholder confidence: ISO 45001 certification can increase
stakeholder confidence in your organization's ability to manage OHS risks
and hazards.
Increase productivity: By reducing the number of accidents and illnesses,
ISO 45001 can help increase productivity and reduce downtime.
Lower insurance costs: Implementing ISO 45001 can provide a platform
to attract lower insurance premiums as it proves the organization is
performing strong due diligence in managing and protecting their
employees.
26. Contd..
Foster management involvement & accountability: ISO 45001 requires top
management to be actively involved in the OHS management system, which can
help foster a culture of safety and accountability
Reduce risk: ISO 45001 can help organizations identify and manage OHS risks
and hazards, reducing the likelihood of accidents and illnesses
Identify opportunities: By identifying and managing OHS risks and hazards, ISO
45001 can help organizations identify opportunities for improvement and
innovation
Stand out as an industry leader: ISO 45001 certification can help your
organization stand out as a leader in OHS management, demonstrating your
commitment to employee safety and well-being
27.
28. Comparision of OHSAS 18001:2007 & ISO 45001:2018
The OHSAS 18001 certification primarily focuses on the occupational risk of any
organisation while the ISO 45001 focuses on both the risk and opportunities. By doing
so, it not only eliminates the chance of future hazards and also finds opportunities to
improve the overall safety standard.
