IBM Research presented an overview of the 9P network file system protocol. 9P was developed for the Plan 9 distributed operating system and allows files and resources to be accessed over a network similarly to how they are accessed locally. It uses a simple request-response model and supports operations like opening, reading, writing and stat'ing files. The 9P protocol has been implemented for several platforms and extended to support UNIX semantics.
VirtFS is a paravirtual file system that allows passing file systems between the KVM hypervisor and guest virtual machines. It uses the Plan 9 protocol for communication and has a server implemented in QEMU and a client in the guest kernel. VirtFS aims to provide better performance than virtual disks or network-based file systems by avoiding layers of indirection and enabling features like sharing files between guests.
This document discusses analyzing light virtualization mechanisms for deploying network functions in data centers. It motivates scaling to support thousands of virtual environments on a single server. Containers offer less overhead than virtual machines. Docker containers were analyzed for running network functions, which required modifying Docker's isolation of IPC and networking. Performance tests showed Docker containers had negligible overhead compared to normal virtual network functions. Memory was also correctly limited by Docker. The conclusion is Linux containers via Docker can vertically scale to thousands of isolated environments on one machine for network functions.
Madhu Rangarajan will provide an overview of Networking trends they are seeing in Cloud, various network topologies and tradeoffs, and trends in the acceleration of packet processing workloads. They will also talk about some of the work going on in Intel to address these trends, including FPGAs in the datacenter.

This document discusses the benefits of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) for reducing latency. It states that 10GE allows for lower CPU utilization and reduced latency within servers compared to Gigabit Ethernet. It also discusses that while Infiniband promised low latency, it required application rewrites and added complexity due to needing translation to Ethernet outside local networks. The document explores 10GE cabling options like SFP+ which provide the lowest latency, and network interface cards that support technologies like RDMA for further reducing latency within servers. With the right hardware and software, organizations can see over an 80% reduction in overall end-to-end latency by moving from Gigabit Ethernet to 10GE.

Enea Linux and Light-weight Threading
Enea Linux is a customized Linux distribution powered by Yocto that is tailored for telecom and networking applications. It includes over 150 curated packages and supports hardware from various vendors. Enea also introduces Light-weight Runtime Threading (LWRT), which partitions the system into real-time and non-real-time domains to improve performance. LWRT runs most processes in user-space with an optimized scheduler for lower latency compared to standard pthreads. LWRT provides benefits like determinism without depending on the PREEMPT_RT patch and allows both POSIX and real-time APIs.

NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) is an ETSI industry specification that involves virtualizing network functions like firewalls and load balancers that traditionally run on proprietary hardware appliances. NFV aims to reduce network operators' capital and operating expenses by consolidating network equipment on commodity servers and switching hardware in data centers, while also decreasing the time it takes to deploy new services. NFV complements but is distinct from network virtualization and SDN efforts.

What is NFV? How does it relate to SDN, what does it mean for the telecommunications industry, and why should anyone outside of that industry care?
Presentation delivered at CloudOpen Europe, Düsseldorf, October 2014
This presentation discusses the design and evaluation of two open-source implementations of the LTE EPC, one based on SDN principles and the other based on NFV, and presents a performance comparison of the two approaches. Speaker: Mythili Vutukuru
The document discusses how deep learning requires a large amount of computing power and how its requirements are driving the convergence of high performance computing and hyperscale data centers. It notes that deep neural networks require orders of magnitude more computations per data byte than traditional algorithms. This large computational need, coupled with the growth of data centers and data volumes, means deep learning workloads will require specialized hardware designs across multiple levels, from silicon design to data center architecture. Heterogeneous computing resources optimized for deep learning will be needed both within and across servers and data centers to efficiently process large neural networks on big data.

Modern CPUs have many cores and advanced instruction sets like AVX that allow performing multiple operations simultaneously. To handle 100 million packets per second, a platform needs network interfaces with speeds of at least 10 Gbps and a PCIe bus and memory fast enough to keep up. The Linux networking stack is not optimized for these speeds, so achieving line rate requires implementing the network processing in userspace using techniques like DPDK that avoid kernel overhead.

SYRIA CRISIS - (USA) CHEMICAL WEAPONS ATTACK (telugu)VogelDenise
During the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1971, the United States sprayed defoliants like Agent Orange to remove trees and vegetation that provided cover for enemy forces. These chemical weapons are estimated to have maimed or killed between 400,000 to 500,000 people, including many civilians. While the U.S. has renounced chemical weapons, questions remain about whether the U.S. continues chemical weapons research and what policy it will take regarding allegations of current uses by Syria and other nations.

The document discusses coaching training companies and the move towards distance learning. Noble Manhattan Coaching is one of the largest coaching companies, having trained over 7,800 coaches across 26 countries since being established in 1993. The top six coaching companies are evaluated based on factors like time in business, number of students trained, and annual revenue. Current standards for coach training require at least 200 hours of training and 50 hours of coaching experience. There is a trend towards more distance learning opportunities in coaching, using methods like webinars and video conferencing, which provide greater flexibility while maintaining educational quality.
For the past 5 years, Canonical has engaged with dozens of communications service providers to design, build and operate virtualization infrastructure for network functions -- for the acronym lovers, delivering NFVI for VNFs. This presentation goes over the approach, challenges and learnings from multiple NFVI projects supporting multiple telco use cases.

White Paper Why Use 16Gb Fibre Channel with Windows Server 2012 DeploymentsTũi Wichets
This white paper discusses the benefits of using 16Gb Fibre Channel (FC) with Windows Server 2012 deployments. Key points:
- Windows Server 2012 supports much greater scalability for virtualization than previous versions, enabling over 1 million IOPS from a single VM. 16Gb FC provides the high-performance storage networking needed to take advantage of these capabilities.
- FC remains the dominant block storage architecture in large enterprises due to benefits like shared storage across servers, rapid VM migration, and elastic capacity. 16Gb FC HBAs certified for Windows Server 2012 can deliver high storage I/O.
- N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) allows a single FC HBA port to provide multiple

Cloud providers are constantly addressing the technology limitations on their infrastructures, which must be overcome to meet customer needs. On this presentation, we will demonstrate how technological agnosticism and management flexibility of OpenNebula has allowed Todoencloud to provide the most efficient open source solution to the needs of its customers, choosing the most appropriate virtualization technology (Xen and KVM), storage approach (ZFS vs CEPH), Cloud Bursting solutions (Azure, Amazon) and customized networking topologies.
This document provides an introduction to network functions virtualization (NFV) and discusses its potential benefits and challenges. Some key points:
- NFV involves separating network functions from proprietary hardware appliances and implementing them as software virtual network functions (VNFs) that can run on standard server hardware.
- This allows network functions to be deployed flexibly on commodity hardware and moved easily between data centers. It also aims to reduce costs and simplify network operations.
- Integration with legacy systems and ensuring interoperability between VNFs are seen as main challenges. Data plane performance is also critical for the most demanding use cases.
- Software defined networking (SDN) helps control and interconnect VNFs by
Production high-performance networking with Snabb and LuaJIT (Linux.conf.au 2...Igalia
By Andy Wingo.
It used to be that to set up a serious network, you needed to stock racks and racks with specialized proprietary single-purpose boxes. This was because only specialized hardware could handle the hundreds of gigabits per second that might flow through any given box.
Things have changed. With the rise of cheap commodity Xeon-based servers and widespread availability of 10 gigabit network cards, an off-the-shelf server with a few NICs can now handle the workload. The age of open source software-driven routers is fully here -- but it doesn't look like what we thought it would, 10 years ago.
We thought it would be Linux everywhere, but it turns out that Linux's networking stack is just too slow. To get around this problem, modern high-speed software switches bypass the kernel entirely, instead booting network cards and handling traffic entirely from user-space. The up-side of this is that now we have the possibility of using pleasant, hackable, open source, standalone software stacks to deliver network applications that are tailored to specific needs.
This talk presents Snabb, a toolkit for building user-space network functions. Snabb is entirely written in the expressive Lua language, minimizing the amount of code that you have to write to get stuff done. Snabb specifically uses the LuaJIT implementation of Lua, giving us excellent code generation as
well as efficient access to low-level binary data and AVX2 assembly generation.
Snabb's goal is to be "rewritable software": software that's so simple that you could explain it to someone and they could write their own. By the end of the presentation, you too should have this feeling.
We will also describe how Snabb is used in practice in major telecoms and ISPs to provide IPv6 transition technologies to entire countries. Using Snabb allowed a small team of open-source hackers to ship a product that competed favorably
against offerings from traditional network vendors.

CloudOpen 2013: Developing cloud infrastructure: from scratch: the tale of an...Andrey Korolyov
The document summarizes the development of cloud infrastructure from scratch by an ISP. Key points include:
- Ceph was chosen for storage due to its feature set, but initial versions were unstable and had I/O freezes.
- Early versions of libvirt, KVM, and monitoring tools like collectd were used due to their rich feature sets, but had bugs and leaks that caused instability.
- An orchestrator was launched to manage VMs, but performance tuning like NUMA and various features proved unnecessary or unstable for production use.
- Underlying components like XFS and Ceph remained unstable under load. Ongoing work was needed to improve stability and performance.
Synnefo @ LinuxCon/CloudOpen North America 2014Vangelis Koukis
Synnefo is an open source cloud platform written from scratch in Python. It provides Compute, Network, Image, Volume, Object Storage, Identity, and Quota services, exposing the corresponding OpenStack APIs. To do so, Synnefo manages multiple Ganeti clusters in the backend, and uses Archipelago to unify cloud storage.
Synnefo has been used to power GRNET's large-scale "~okeanos" public cloud service, currently hosting over 10,000 VMs, with over 350,000 VMs launched in the last three years.
In this presentation, Vangelis Koukis focuses on why Synnefo chose to go the Google way, and why targeting enterprise-like, persistent VMs in a cloud stack matters. After presenting the general Synnefo architecture and components used (Python, Django, Ganeti, KVM, Archipelago, Ceph/RADOS), the talk reviews how Synnefo provides a unified view of cloud storage resources over Archipelago.

Neil Trevett, President of the Khronos Group and Vice President at NVIDIA, presents the "APIs for Accelerating Vision and Inferencing: An Industry Overview of Options and Trade-offs" tutorial at the May 2019 Embedded Vision Summit.
The landscape of SDKs, APIs and file formats for accelerating inferencing and vision applications continues to evolve rapidly. Low-level compute APIs, such as OpenCL, Vulkan and CUDA are being used to accelerate inferencing engines such as OpenVX, CoreML, NNAPI and TensorRT, being fed by neural network file formats such as NNEF and ONNX.
Some of these APIs, like OpenCV, are vision-specific, while others, like OpenCL, are general-purpose. Some engines, like CoreML and TensorRT, are supplier-specific, while others such as OpenVX, are open standards that any supplier can adopt. Which ones should you use for your project? Trevett answers these and other questions in this presentation.
The document summarizes Novell's roadmap for Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES2), including upcoming support pack 3 (SP3). SP3 will include enhancements to Domain Services for Windows, CIFS, QuickFinder, and iFolder. It also discusses the "Remote Office Appliance" which will help centrally manage remote sites. Long term, Novell is focusing on simplification, interoperability, and the "Ponderosa" vision of decoupling workloads and deploying appliances for the cloud or on-premise.

LCNA14: Why Use Xen for Large Scale Enterprise Deployments? - Konrad Rzeszute...The Linux Foundation
For many years, the Xen community has been delivering a solid virtualization platform for the enterprise. In support of the Xen community innovation effort, Oracle has been translating our enterprise experience with mission-critical workloads and large-scale infrastructure deployments into upstream contributions for the Linux and Xen efforts. In this session, you'll hear from a key Oracle expert, and community member, about Oracle contributions that focus on large-scale Xen deployments, networking, PV drivers, new PVH architecture, performance enhancements, dynamic memory usage with ‘tmem', and much more. This is your chance to get an under the hood view and see why the Xen architecture is the ideal choice for the enterprise.
Mpls conference 2016-data center virtualisation-11-marchAricent
Aricent’s presentation on “Micro VNFs and Micro service environment” on next generation Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) is heating up. In debate on micro services, carriers has requested communities to step up research on micro service deployments.
Aricent believes that existing VNFs, which comes directly from the physical appliances software are not rightly designed and are less suited for cloud operations. These first generation VNFs are replication of physical appliances, monolithic architecture and need more computational power. These are heavy with physical appliance platform features i.e. HA, ISSU, Nonstop Routing/Switching and they have lots of redundant code which may not be necessary on cloud. As cloud platform provides these feature through its inherent platform capabilities.
