Power BI is a cloud-based service that works with Excel to provide a complete self-service business intelligence (BI) solution. With both Excel and Power BI for Office 365, you can give everyone in your organization a powerful new way to work with data. In Excel, you can now discover, analyze, and visualize data like never before to find valuable business insights. With Power BI for Office 365 you can easily deploy a cloud-based BI environment for users to share insights, collaborate and access reports, from anywhere on any device.
The PowerBi site is a front end for your Excel Power View Spreadsheets. The BI frontend can be configured To show featured reports, you can tag reports as your favorite etc. The reports form here renders as either Silverlight apps or as HTML5 Power View. HTML5 Power view makes this available for devices such as iPad or Android tablets. This BI Portal is also where you, if you have the permissions to do so, can schedule a refresh for your spreadsheet.
The Power BI functionality is an addition to your existing Office 365 Plan. Prices vary based on your Office 365 plan.
The Data Management Gateway is a client agent that provides access to on-premises data sources in your organization. You must have at least one gateway installed in your corporate environment and register it with the Power BI for Office 365 Admin Center portal before creating data sources in the portal. Data Management Gateway Connects to corporate data sources and sends data to Microsoft cloud services through a secure channel (Service Bus). Secure Credential Store All credentials used by the gateway are stored on-premises. Encrypted backup of credentials can also be stored in the cloud to enable business continuity scenarios. Corporate Data Sources The Gateway can connect to a variety of data sources
