Resistance!
Jesus, we are told, went back to his home town. But people there didn't buy his story, and said, essentially: who on earth do you think you are? We have known you forever. And he was amazed to see that he could do no deeds of power there, besides heal a few people (And, really who can't do that? (Joke, obvs.)) (This is my very brief precis of Mark 6:1-6 )
People rejected him because they though they knew what he had to say. That's kind of like our culture - it thinks it knows what Christianity is and who Jesus is, and think they have rejected him. But do they? What is going on here? To open up the discussion we spent a while thinking about different archetypes from our culture, and archetypes who represent more Kingdom values.
It was a good evening, and we had a good conversation, so I was enthused to blog about it (as part of his current Charles Taylor obsession.)

The community is and has always been a core part of how we cut through the noise so our message gets heard. Understanding the relationship of the community to the message is the key to what I call “shareability.” In this session, explore the keys to what makes a message resonate, take root and change hearts, lives and communities.

Paul and Barnabas had a sharp disagreement over whether to take John Mark on their missionary journey again after he had deserted them previously. As a result, they parted ways, with Barnabas taking John Mark and sailing for Cyprus while Paul chose Silas and left for Syria and Cilicia. Even heroic partnerships like Paul and Barnabas' can fall apart, though Paul later reconciled with both men. It's important to be open to reconciliation and forgive as people and relationships are imperfect.

The story of Joseph Barnabas from the Bible illustrates how he encouraged the apostles, brought Mark to the apostles, and exhorted a church to remain faithful to God. Short mission trips, like when Jesus sent his disciples to towns to spread the gospel, can open our eyes to God's heart for all people. Participating in missions can change our hearts and give us a bigger vision for God's work. Missions help some people receive a clear call to pastoral or missionary work, serve God more passionately in their home church, see God's work in new places and people, and better understand God's plan and purposes for the world. God's heart is for missions as salvation for all people, as Jesus was the first missionary who came from heaven, and missions is about God and his kingdom, not ourselves.
