In this lesson we examine Jesus, the Master teacher, the mind of those who opposed His teaching and what they were motivated by. In the second lesson we will examine how the motive led to the method of His death. Both slides and audio can be found together at www.cmcoc.org

The master, the mind, the motive, the method
1. The Master, the mind, the motive, the
method
Sermon text: Mark 15
Sermon by: Brian Birdow
2. Objective of Lesson
1. To better understand the Master
2. To understand the mind of those who opposed
Him.
3. To understand the motive behind killing Jesus
4. To better understand the method to destroy
Jesus character and kill him.
3. The Master Teacher
• John 7:14-16 But when it was now the midst of the
feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to
teach. The Jews then were astonished, saying,
“How has this man become learned, having never been
educated?” So Jesus answered them and said, “My
teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
• John 7:45-46 The officers then came to the chief
priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did
you not bring Him?” The officers answered, “Never has
a man spoken the way this man speaks.”
4. The Master Teacher
✦John 11:28 And when she had so said, she
went her way, and called Mary her sister
secretly, saying, The Master is come, and
calleth for thee.
✦John 13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and
ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord
and Master, have washed your feet; ye also
ought to wash one another’s feet.
5. The Master Teacher
• Jesus the Master Teacher taught us that His kingdom is
not of this world and that our battle is not a physical one!
• John 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this
world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants
would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to
the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not from here.”
• 2 Corinthians 10:1-5 …turn with me please…
• Ephesians 6:9-18 …turn with me please…
7. Mark 14:1-2
• The Passover was supposed to remind the Israelites that God
had punished the wicked (Egpytians) and rewarded the innocent.
The Feast of Unleavened Bread reminded them of the month
they came out.
• Exodus 12:26-27 And when your children say to you, ‘What does
this rite mean to you?’ you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to
the Lord who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in
Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but spared our homes.’ ”
And the people bowed low and worshiped.

8. Mark 14:1-2
• The so called “religious elite” were not focused on
the Feast of Unleavened Bread or Passover
memorial. Rather they focused on how to arrest
Jesus (by stealth or crafty) and kill Him! … But not
during the feast, because of a possible uproar.
• Matthew 23:1-12 …turn with me please….
9. Application
• We too can have the wrong motive for coming to worship!
1. All my friends go and I want to be around them.
2. I get to show everyone how great of a voice I have.
3. I get to wear my new blazer or hills. I get show off how much I
know in bible class.
4. It’s just what we have always done and I get to see my family
and we go and eat afterwards.
5. When everyone see’s what I have done then they will praise me.
11. Envy defined
• A feeling of discontented or resentful longing
aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities
or so called luck (Ref. 1 Timothy 6:6-12)
• A feeling of grudging admiration for someone else’s
talent, integrity, personality, looks, money, car(s),
popularity or happiness.
• Envy may lead one to avoid, to dislike or to
insinuate the so called “superior person” is bad to
make others think badly of them.
12. Envy
• Proverbs 27:4 Wrath is cruel and anger is outrageous, but
who can stand before envy?
• 1 Samuel 18:8-9 Then Saul became very angry, for this
saying displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to
David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed
thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?”
Saul looked at David with suspicion (or outright hostility
B.B) from that day on.
13. They accused the Master
• Mark 15:3-5 And the chief priests accused him of many
things: but he answered nothing. 4 And Pilate asked him
again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many
things they witness against thee. 5 But Jesus yet answered
nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.
• Forbidding to pay the tribute tax to Caesar (Luke 23:2).
False—Reference: Luke 20:20-26
• Claiming to be the Christ, a king (Luke 23:2). True—
Reference: John 4:25-26
14. The master had no fault!
• Luke 23:14-15 Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers
and the people, and said to them, “You brought this man to me
as one who incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having
examined Him before you, I have found no guilt in this man
regarding the charges which you make against Him. “No, nor
has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing
deserving death has been done by Him.
• 1 Peter 2:21-25 …turn with me please
