5. Christians called him (Mahatma Gandhi) “an
unbaptized Christian” or “a Hindu who was deeply
christianized.”His non violent protests such as the
demonstration at the salt factory, were seen as the
concretization of evangelical preaching. And whoever
saw how far the Mahatma went in self- sacrifice also
tended to see him as an example for church and
Christianity. He was “the most Christian Christian” -

7. Watts’ Memorial, Postman’s Park (left), so called because it once
stood in the shadow of the city’s old General Post Office building.
8. On a stone wall, underneath a makeshift overhang, are a series of ceramic plaques,

the lives of others. One plaque reads:
9. Unlike many valiant memorials dedicated to those in the armed forces, this
was created entirely in honour of the everyday hero. It is a testament to the
incredible sacrifices we, as humans, can and do make on a daily basis.
10. On 5 September 1887, the painter and sculptor, Fredric Watts (pictured below), wrote to The Times, proposing
a tribute of a different sort for Queen Victoria’s upcoming Golden Jubilee. Watts believed that art could act as a
force for social change, and suggested a didactic monument celebrating ‘heroism in every-day life’. He wrote:
It must surely be a matter of regret when names worthy to be remembered and stories stimulating and
instructive are allowed to be forgotten. The material prosperity of a nation is not an abiding possession; the
deeds of its people are.

16. The magnificent temples of Egypt no longer impressed his mind with their
superstition and falsehood. In the solemn grandeur of the everlasting hills he
beheld the majesty of the Most High, and in contrast realized how powerless and
insignificant were the gods of Egypt.
Everywhere the Creator's name was written. Moses seemed to stand in His
presence and to be over-shadowed by His power. Here his pride and self-
sufficiency were swept away. In the stern simplicity of his wilderness life, the
results of the ease and luxury of Egypt disappeared. Moses became patient,
reverent, and humble, "very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of
the earth" (Numbers 12:3), yet strong in faith in the mighty God of Jacob

17. It was no light test that was thus brought upon Abraham, no small sacrifice
that was required of him. There were strong ties to bind him to his country, his
kindred, and his home. But he did not hesitate to obey the call.
The agony which he endured during the dark days of that fearful trial was
permitted that he might understand from his own experience something of the
greatness of the sacrifice made by the infinite God for man's redemption.

18. Jesus said of the poor widow, She "hath cast in more than they all." The rich had bestowed
from their abundance, many of them to be seen and honoured by men. Their large
donations had deprived them of no comfort, or even luxury; they had required no sacrifice,
and could not be compared in value with the widow's mite
. The "two mites which make a farthing" have brought to God's treasury an amount of
money far greater than the contributions of those rich Jews. The influence of that little gift
has been like a stream, small in its beginning, but widening and deepening as it flowed
down through the ages. In a thousand ways it has contributed to the relief of the poor and
the spread of the gospel. Her example of self-sacrifice has acted and reacted upon
thousands of hearts in every land and in every age. It has appealed to both the rich and the
poor, and their offerings have swelled the value of her gift. God's blessing upon the
widow's mite has made it the source of great results.

Because we are made in the image of God. And as we know, God is love! We are His

sacrifice life.

28. .
The Saviour said: "I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me." John 12:32. For
the joy of seeing souls redeemed, Christ endured the cross. He became the living sacrifice for a
fallen world. Into that act of self-sacrifice was put the heart of Christ, the love of God; and
through this sacrifice was given to the world the mighty influence of the Holy Spirit. It is
through sacrifice that God's work must be carried forward. Of every child of God self-sacrifice
is required. Christ said: "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself; and take up his
cross daily, and follow Me." Luke 9:23. To all who believe, Christ gives a new character. This
character, through His infinite sacrifice, is the reproduction of His own.

30. We pray for blessings, we pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
And all the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things
* 'Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know
You're near,
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love
As if every promise from Your word is not enough
And all the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we'd have faith to believe
Chorus*
When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not,
This is not our home
It's not our home
Chorus*
Editor's Notes
The Apostle Paul understood this when he said: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. The life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).
In baptism we receive our initiation into the Christian community in terms of death and resurrection: “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).
You should die to self, and live for God. The Apostle Paul teaches: “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:2-3).
For some disciples, this also involved following Jesus to physical death. Such should be the level of commitment…….
