6. Hierarchy of goals
Using the tree-map:
• Incremental goals lead to the long term goal
• Combats perceived imbalance of skill & challenge
• Creating goals can be a mutual process
• initially: teacher suggests, and student develops
• Soon: student suggests, and ALL develop
• Regular feedback helps the student notice
• Achievement/progression +/- comments from ALL

8. Understanding through stories &
experience
• Musical expression is not concrete
• Children (and adults) can understand
and grasp abstraction
Stories, imagery, and metaphor are useful
teaching tools and help us connect
