Kathleen Ludewig Omollo from the University of Michigan presented to the University of Nairobi School of Public Health on open education. Millions of open educational resources are available online and can be adapted for new contexts and delivery methods. Openly licensing one's own work allows others to build upon it and increases the visibility and impact of that work. Connecting with open education networks and communities helps share knowledge and enables collaboration.
On March 25, 2010 eighteen members of the U-M community from the School of Information, Medical School, and School of Public Policy gathered to address the question, "Can we build a shared social network platform that addresses global health education needs and increases the sharing of health education resources?" This document discusses open educational resources (OER) and the African Health OER Network. It defines OER as educational materials that are freely available online for anyone to use and adapt under an open license. The network aims to advance health education in Africa by developing and sharing OER that are relevant to African contexts to address issues like lack of faculty capacity and outdated curricula. It outlines the network's activities, platforms for sharing OER, and early impacts in increasing collaboration between universities and engagement of students.
Capacity Building through a Collaborative Health Network: The African Health ...Kathleen Ludewig Omollo
On October 7, 2011, Kathleen Ludewig Omollo (University of Michigan) and Nadia Tagoe (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology) presented to the University of Michigan students in the SI 575 Community Informatics Seminar.
The mission of the African Health OER Network is to advance health education in Africa by using open educational resources (OER) developed by and targeted toward Africans in order to share knowledge, address curriculum gaps, and support communities around health education. The project began in 2008 with five institutions in Ghana and South Africa but we continue to draw in more African participants with the goal of building a continent-wide Network. This presentation will explore the rationale for harnessing OER in the health sector, the motivations for forming the Network, the services and activities of the Network, and the initial outcomes and lessons learned. Guest Nadia Tagoe will speak about the health OER project at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, one of the founding institutional partners.
This presentation includes example openly licensed learning materials for health education. The presentation was shared for a workshop "Open Education for Collaboration, Flexibility, and Global Visibility", which I gave at University of Nairobi on August 27, 2013. All of the materials for the workshop are available at http://openmi.ch/uon-aug2013.
Everything I Ever Needed to Know About Social Media I Learnt From Spider-ManSven Larsen
The document outlines 7 lessons about social media that the author claims to have learned from Spider-Man comics and Stan Lee. The lessons include listening to audiences first, being real, engaging audiences through dialogue, using audience feedback to improve products, building communities, communicating across all platforms, and having a sense of responsibility when using social media influence. The document promotes the author's social media expertise and provides contact information.
The document summarizes the African Health OER Network, which aims to improve health education in Africa by enabling institutions to share open educational resources (OER). The network includes several African and international universities and organizations. It is building an online infrastructure to allow participants to collaborate on developing and sharing OER materials, with the goal of addressing gaps in health education curricula across institutions. Initial activities included creating 150 new OER materials and case studies on integrating OER into health education programs. Next steps include growing the OER collection and engaging other organizations to introduce OER into existing health projects.

AFRICA Atlas of Our Changing EnvironmentAndy Dabydeen
The document discusses the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) efforts to raise awareness about environmental issues through effective communication. UNEP aims to get its message across through compelling visual presentations that tell stories of environmental changes over time using satellite imagery, photos, and narratives. The document provides details on UNEP's Atlas projects in Africa which compile environmental data, images, and facts about each country to track issues like deforestation, population growth, and progress on sustainability goals. The goal is to make policymakers and the public aware of important environmental challenges and opportunities through engaging visual content.

Versatile Wireless Networks for Offline Sharing and Tracking of Open Educatio...Kathleen Ludewig Omollo
This demonstration will showcase two low-cost wireless network configurations using Raspberry Pi and TP-Link routers that allow sharing and accessing open educational resources offline. The devices cost under $50 each, create WiFi access points from USB drives, and can be powered by batteries, addressing barriers to internet and electricity access in African universities. The demo will feature initial performance test results and user feedback from devices deployed in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Liberia.

YOER Pi - An Open Design for Adaptable, Portable, Offline Wireless SharingKathleen Ludewig Omollo
YOER Pi is an open source, portable wireless device that allows users to access and share digital content without internet access. It functions as a wireless router, web server, and file server to allow Wi-Fi enabled devices to browse and search content within range. The content and software are openly licensed to allow for customization to local needs and contexts. Twenty devices were deployed in Africa between 2013-2014, with plans for more deployments in 2015. Testing showed the Raspberry Pi 2 configuration provided the best performance and cost-efficiency. Surveys and focus groups are planned to understand device usage.

Portable Local Area Network Empowers Sharing of Medical Education Materials in Settings with Restricted Internet & Electricity
The document discusses two models - the TP-Link MR3020 ("Library Box") and the Raspberry Pi - for creating portable wireless networks to share digital learning materials in settings with limited electricity and internet access. Both devices cost $40-$200, are small and portable, and can be powered by USB. They have been deployed in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Liberia to allow individuals to access files through a web browser. The Raspberry Pi offers more customization but materials can be easily updated on the TP-Link via a flash drive. Initial results suggest these may enable increased sharing of educational resources
Crowdsourcing Video Translations for a Global Network for Health EducationKathleen Ludewig Omollo
The University of Michigan launched a campaign in 2013 to translate some of its open educational health videos into multiple languages to make them more accessible globally. Over 50 volunteers translated over 140 caption tracks for 31 videos, covering 12 languages. Crowdsourcing translations from volunteer translators proved to be an effective way to disseminate the materials to a wider audience at a low cost. Proper coordination of volunteers and use of translation software helped streamline the process and produce high-quality translations.

Integrating Public, Dynamic Metrics Into an Open Educational Resources PlatformKathleen Ludewig Omollo
The document presents a framework for integrating public, dynamic metrics into an open educational resources (OER) platform. Interviews with faculty, librarians, and specialists revealed that readily available metrics can strengthen relationships with content authors by demonstrating impact over time. Metrics also provide justification for the effort and costs associated with content development. The framework utilizes APIs from content hosting sites like YouTube and SlideShare to aggregate usage data and integrate metrics into customizable dashboards down to the individual resource level. This allows for detection of patterns and deeper analysis of OER usage over time.
