Many Buildings suffer from overheating. This can result in a whole range of negative impacts on occupants - poor performance, lethargy, absenteeism etc. and the building itself - condensation, mould, slip hazards etc..
The first, fastest and most cost-effective way to resolve overheating in buildings is to address the movement and circulation of air. Low levels of air movement result in poor circulation and stuffy, uncomfortable, overheated environments.

NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER IN CONDENSING HEAT EXCHANGERS...ssuser7dcef0
Power plants release a large amount of water vapor into the
atmosphere through the stack. The flue gas can be a potential
source for obtaining much needed cooling water for a power
plant. If a power plant could recover and reuse a portion of this
moisture, it could reduce its total cooling water intake
requirement. One of the most practical way to recover water
from flue gas is to use a condensing heat exchanger. The power
plant could also recover latent heat due to condensation as well
as sensible heat due to lowering the flue gas exit temperature.
Additionally, harmful acids released from the stack can be
reduced in a condensing heat exchanger by acid condensation. reduced in a condensing heat exchanger by acid condensation.
Condensation of vapors in flue gas is a complicated
phenomenon since heat and mass transfer of water vapor and
various acids simultaneously occur in the presence of noncondensable
gases such as nitrogen and oxygen. Design of a
condenser depends on the knowledge and understanding of the
heat and mass transfer processes. A computer program for
numerical simulations of water (H2O) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
condensation in a flue gas condensing heat exchanger was
developed using MATLAB. Governing equations based on
mass and energy balances for the system were derived to
predict variables such as flue gas exit temperature, cooling
water outlet temperature, mole fraction and condensation rates
of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The equations were solved
using an iterative solution technique with calculations of heat
and mass transfer coefficients and physical properties.

“Building design is a critical tool in the promotion of societal health and well-being, yet there remains a
radical disconnect between the physical expectations placed on workers and the architectural response to
such demands.”
Mr. Anuj Bhagwati, Managing Director, A.T.E.

HMWC (1915-1917) observed:
• Working in insufficiently ventilated workshops predisposes to disease and gravely interferes with individual
energy and physical capacity …. Continuously working in a stagnant atmosphere is not trivial
• The air, even if fresh, may be too hot or too cold, too humid or too dry; either extreme should be avoided to
ensure reasonable bodily comfort and the most efficient work
• Some contemporary studies on comfort and productivity:
• 12% higher productivity possible by maintaining comfort conditions Sharma & Chandwani 2016 IIM Ahmedabad study

“Having worked in air-conditioned offices for
several years, I have experienced slight headaches
towards the end of the day around 4 pm. This does
not happen in the TeraSpin premises….. breathing
fresh air all day and being in natural light all
through the working hours”

Canteens and Rest Spaces
HMWC (1915-1917) observed:
• The Committee expresses the opinion that by far the most hopeful enterprise has been the establishment of
industrial canteens or workpeople's dining rooms in or near the factory
• It was not merely a question of supplying food, but of doing so under restful and comfortable conditions, in
rooms well-lighted, ventilated and properly warmed

• As the pace of technological innovation intensifies and human beings are asked to process more
information and perform increasingly complex tasks, it becomes increasingly important for
architectural design to respond to these needs
• A thoughtfully designed space can increase productivity, foster a sense of community, and
reduce environmental impact
