Here's a Visual Merchandising booklet from Visplay for both the young student and the "old pro".
Excellent guide to either refresh your knowledge or to spark your creativity.
Enjoy.
In this project, I worked with a group to create a buying plan for the shoes department of Zara. We analyzed up and coming trends for footwear and looked to see how those trends could further expand the ZARA shoe market.

I didn't get much time to prepare this assignment. I prepared it in 30 mins time. I was traveling most of last week and didn't have internet access. I plan to work harder for next assingments. Thanks
1. Bath and Body Works
This store draws you in with its mix of fragrances. It is also very well lit. The doors are open and you
feel welcome. The colour scheme is neutral and homey. It’s not too loud; the music that is played is
very quiet and subtle. The store is warm. I think it’s the burning candles that give it that distinctive
smell.
The register is located at the back so you have to pass through the last section that has a lot of cheaper
travel size items. Security is nonexistent. I think the products are too cheap to steal.
The staff is very helpful. They are all wearing smocks so it’s easy to tell that they are employed there.
Sales items are dispersed throughout the store. The prices are easy to find and there are lots of impulse
items at the cash. They have lots of promo sizes of various products.
The products are mostly appeal to women. They do have items for men though. Most people shop with
a friend to get their opinion.
Sampling is encouraged. There is a tester for every single product they have. You always leave the store
with more than you intended to by buy.
2. American Eagle
They are selling a lifestyle as demonstrated by their store window. They appeal to a younger athletic
crowd.
The store is bright and the products are hung neatly on racks or they are folded on display tables.
The register is in the middle of the store and the sale items are in the back. The doors are open and
there are signs in the front window. There was music playing, not too loud. There wasn’t visible security
presence. It wasn’t busy so people just took a quick look around and then left.
The fixtures are plain so the store doesn’t look too expensive and you feel as if anyone can afford to
shop there.
Clothing is arranged by gender and then by type. Sale items are in the back.
Most customers are with their parents.
3. Nine West
The doors are open and there is a theme to the front window display. The shoes are grouped by type;
high heels to flats. The shoes are arranged by colour and style. The purses are on the top shelf so you
have to look up for those.
I don’t like that they had a huge sale sign gave you the idea that the whole store was 25% off. If you
read the fine print you will see it’s only the purses. But it does get you in the store.
All the shoes are priced at over a hundred dollars and there is no security to speak of. You don’t really
need it because they only display one shoe. There are no impulse items at the register. But they do try
to sell you products to protect your boots if you are buying boots.
All Nine west stores look alike and carry basically the same merchandise. They don’t generally cater to
the area like some stores. Most people shop alone at this location. You have to touch all the things you
are interested in because the price is usually at the bottom.
4. The Gap
All the stores look the same. They are white and blue with hardwood floors. It’s their branding. They
appeal to a young and athletic crowd. I didn’t’ see any plus size merchandise. If you’re fat, you’re out
of luck. The staffs mills around and are very helpful. They prefer to get you the folded products because
they have to refold everything you destroyed trying to get the pair at the bottom.
The sales people wear gap clothing. The sale items are at the back and are generally a mess. I try to
stay away from that rack. The disorder makes me crazy. There really hasn’t been a way found yet to put
together disparate merchandise and make it look neat. The new merchandise is well folded and grouped
by coulour. There is pop music playing but not too loud. No visible security.
Most of the customers are with someone. Touching the products is encouraged
5. Reitmans
This store is located in a really great spot. You can walk through store to get to the other side of the
building. Most people will stop to have a look and that increases the chances of impulse purchases. The
store is well organized. Petits, Regular and Plus sizes are easily identifiable. The staff usually fixing
merchandise and it’s a pretty busy location.
There are tables at the front and the back of the store that have pictures of the outfit with the pieces
there on the table. The store has dark tones but is well lit the overhead lighting. The merchandise is
well ordered. It’s not a high end store so the merchandise is not the best t quality but the styles are
modern. The store looks more expensive because the fixes are neat and modern.
The register is located in the middle of the store and easy to find. They have accessories beside the
register to dress up your outfit. The staff is wearing the merchandise.
Most customers are with their friends because they are on their way somewhere else. S o they
generally don’t stay long.
6. H&M
They always have great display windows. The merchandise is well displayed. The doors are open and
there is always a table full of merchandise at the front entrance. The store is packed with merchandise
everywhere.
The prices are reasonable and appeal to teenagers. The change rooms are always busy. I’m not sure
why because they have a great return policy. The customers were mainly teenage girls shopping with
their friends.
The colour scheme was black and white. The registers are near the back and there are lots of bins with
different types of accessories at the register. The line has ropes around it and thay put the bins within
reach so you can grab stuff before you get to the front of the line.
The sale items are dispersed throughout the store. There are big signs with the prices hanging from the
ceiling. The place is a crowed mess in my opinion. But with teenagers pulling the things apart it’s pretty
hard to keep up the mess. They also put way too much merchandise in each area.
