Teaching with WorldCat Local: What's Different?
At the LOEX 2011 conference, Meg Grotti and Karen Sobel presented a discussion on teaching with the WorldCat Local library catalog discovery layer. Their presentation focused on honestly laying out the benefits and challenges of teaching with WCL, and ideas for making teaching better.

Measuring Anonymity in Academic Virtual Reference
Kristin Grabarek Roper and I presented this information as a poster session at the American Library Association's Annual Conference 2012. We hope that other librarians, academic and otherwise, may choose to adapt our methods to measure anonymity and assess identity at their institutions.
Teaching with WorldCat Local: What's Different? (Slide captions)
The document summarizes a presentation about teaching with WorldCat Local (WCL). Some key findings from surveying librarians who teach with WCL include: (1) Skills taught focus on basic keyword searching and sorting/drilling down search results; (2) Most teach searching for books but avoid teaching article searches; (3) Teaching does not usually differ between undergraduate and graduate students. The presentation suggests additional practices for teaching higher-level information literacy skills using WCL.
Autotutor scotty adjustments
This document outlines the steps to create an assessment item using the AutoTutor Lite system. It walks the user through selecting a question type (e.g. fill in the blank, matching, multiple choice, essay), providing prompts and answers, and adding feedback or hints. The user can create items with multiple parts and receive guidance at each step to build out their assessment interaction or tutorial. Upon completion, the user can upload and preview their created item within the AutoTutor Lite system.

Observation report power point
The school serves a small, rural community with about 470 students in grades 7-12. About 1/3 of students receive free or reduced lunch. The principal wants to see more academic growth each year on the school report card. The middle school uses RTI to help students in reading and math and assesses them every 3 months. The school has a good special education program with 2 full-time teachers and 2 part-time aides to support inclusion classes. Students are meeting annual measurable goals and participation rates under NCLB.

Cultural Audit of CCSD
This document summarizes information from a cultural audit of schools in the Moapa Valley community. It provides demographic data on students and goals for the Clark County School District and schools in Moapa Valley. The findings note that the CCSD goals do not specifically address the needs of minority student groups while the Moapa Valley schools' missions do. It also finds that the demographics of Moapa Valley schools differ from CCSD and there is limited diversity among staff. The schools are working to improve cultural proficiency and relationships with the Native American population.

The State of Low-Income Students in Polk County

NKYEC Attendance Matters Presentation 11-8-2013
The Northern Kentucky Education Council works to align education initiatives across six counties in Northern Kentucky. It aims to ensure successful transitions for students from birth through career. One of its key regional strategies is to address chronic absenteeism, which is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year. Over 2,300 elementary students in the region missed this threshold in the 2011-2012 school year. The document discusses convening local schools to review attendance data and strategies, and having an Action Team collaborate with pilot schools to track data, analyze root causes, and share effective approaches to reduce chronic absenteeism in the region.

3 Solutions to Support Greater Educational Equity Right Now
Investing more money, dedicating more people, and doing more to improve schools and support teachers is needed for educational equity, but here are 3 things you can do to support greater educational equity right now.
Attendance and student performance arp (1)
The document presents research on the relationship between student attendance and academic performance. It finds that students with higher absenteeism, defined as missing 18 or more days of school, performed at lower levels on standardized tests than students who missed 7 or fewer days. Specifically, higher percentages of chronically absent students scored at the novice level in science and social studies assessments compared to their regularly attending peers. The author concludes that attendance impacts student achievement and that the school needs to implement strategies to improve attendance in order to help more students succeed academically.

- Spending per pupil in the district is 22% less than the state average and net school spending is approaching the state minimum. Based on current trends, the district's standing compared to peers and the state average will deteriorate further.
- The number of teachers has declined from a high of 517 to a low of 399 in recent years due to budget cuts, though some positions were retained last year through stimulus funds and grants.
- The district is proposing increases in class sizes, shortening the school day, doubling fees for clubs/activities, implementing a tiered system for higher athletic fees, and eliminating 3 buses to address budget shortfalls in the coming year.

Haskin Elementary School in Colorado saw significant gains in reading proficiency among 3rd graders after implementing a turnaround plan with Lindamood-Bell that included comprehensive teacher professional development. The percentage of 3rd graders scoring proficient or advanced increased from 41% in 2011 to 76% in 2012, outpacing the state average of 74%. The school serves a high-poverty and minority student population. Principal Kathy Kulp credited Lindamood-Bell's training for impacting instruction across all subjects and increasing achievement.
School of Choice Letter- WES
Westfall Elementary School received an "Effective" rating for the 2010-2011 school year, meeting 7 of 8 performance indicators and earning a performance index of 94.5. However, the school did not meet federal Adequate Yearly Progress targets and is in "School Improvement Status - Year 1" due to students with disabilities not meeting goals. The school is implementing programs like Title 1 support, literacy intervention, and teacher collaboration to improve achievement for all students. Parents are notified of their option to choose another school due to the school improvement status.
My action reserach plan
This document outlines an action research plan to improve school attendance rates at a high school. It discusses establishing an attendance team to identify students with high unexcused absence rates and intervene early through parent contact and education about attendance policies. The goal is to improve learning and graduation rates by reducing truancy. - 1. Observation Report: Raceland-Worthington Middle and High School Warren Kelly EDUC 673
- 2. Demographics Small, rural community of about 2,500 Median family income is $31,500; per capita income is just short of $16,000 School enrollment is 470 for grades 7-12. Mix of male to female students is apx. 50/50. Apx. 1/3 of students are on free or reduced lunch.
- 3. Interview Results Met with Larry Coldiron, principal at Raceland. The school is working toward showing more growth in their annual school report card. They perform consistently with the rest of the state, but improvement is too gradual, and some subjects are still not improving. Implemented RTI in the middle school setting, with many students receiving the help they need in both reading and math. Students are assessed three times per year while in the RTI program to determine if they are benefitting from it or need further assistance.
- 4. The school has a good special ed program given the size of the school. 2 dedicated full-time special ed teachers work with students outside of their inclusion classes, and there are currently 2 part-time instructional aides who work with students in general education classes. Outside of a foreign exchange student or two, there are no ELL students at the school.
- 5. NCLB Annual Progress Students are meeting annual measurable goals in reading and math. Students are meeting the participation rate. Other academic indicators are being met.
