The new circuits incorporate a number of NoSQL technologies which avoid the mapping overhead of breaking down the benchmark object model into relational tables and demonstrate substantial differences in performance and resource consumption. For the right kind of data models, the NoSQL technologies demonstrate order(s) of magnitude improvements in performance with demonstrateable reductions in CPU utilization and storage footprint for the RAW data.
This presentation will review those findings and draw a point of reference for when model complexity and system concurrency should impact your technology selection process in favor of NoSQL solutions capable of dealing specifically with complex information models.

Efficient Parallel Set-Similarity Joins Using MapReduce - Posterrvernica
In this paper we study how to efficiently perform set-similarity joins in parallel using the popular MapReduce framework. We propose a 3-stage approach for end-to-end set-similarity joins. We take as input a set of records and output a set of joined records based on a set-similarity condition. We efficiently partition the data across nodes in order to balance the workload and minimize the need for replication. We study both self-join and R-S join cases, and show how to carefully control the amount of data kept in main memory on each node. We also propose solutions for the case where, even if we use the most fine-grained partitioning, the data still does not fit in the main memory of a node. We report results from extensive experiments on real datasets, synthetically increased in size, to evaluate the speedup and scaleup properties of the proposed algorithms using Hadoop.

Java, fin dalle sue prime versioni, ha avuto a disposizione la libreria JDBC per accedere a tale tipo di database. In questa presentazione si mostrerà come utilizzare la libreria JDBC, mostrandone pregi e limiti. In seguito si mostrerà l’utilizzo tradizionale di Hibernate, forse il più famoso e diffuso degli Object/Relational Mapper (ORM), che permettono di trattare i dati relazionali inserendoli all’interno di oggetti. Infine si introdurrà la Java Persistence API (JPA), la libreria di persistenza ORM introdotta con la Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) 5.

Abstract:
Legacy enterprise architectures still rely on relational data warehouse and require moving and syncing with the so-called "Data Lake" where raw data is stored and periodically ingested into a distributed file system such as HDFS.
Moreover, there are a number of use cases where you might want to avoid storing data on the development cluster disks, such as for regulations or reducing latency, in which case Alluxio (previously known as Tachyon) can make this data available in-memory and shared among multiple applications.
We propose an Agile workflow by combining Spark, Scala, DataFrame (and the recent DataSet API), JDBC, Parquet, Kryo and Alluxio to create a scalable, in-memory, reactive stack to explore data directly from source and develop high quality machine learning pipelines that can then be deployed straight into production.
In this talk we will:
* Present how to load raw data from an RDBMS and use Spark to make it available as a DataSet
* Explain the iterative exploratory process and advantages of adopting functional programming
* Make a crucial analysis on the issues faced with the existing methodology
* Show how to deploy Alluxio and how it greatly improved the existing workflow by providing the desired in-memory solution and by decreasing the loading time from hours to seconds
* Discuss some future improvements to the overall architecture

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
