Appnovation Accelerate Conference - November 18, 2015
Presenter: Andy Parkins
In this fast-paced world of ever-changing technology, the transactional cost in making IT choices to get things done competitively creates technical debt. This debt left unchecked will grow like interest on a loan that is never quite repaid. Join Andy as he walks you through the journey of how the team at Appnovation helped him provide a repeatable practice to continually measure its technology debt score and the plans that's were executed to address the in-balances.
Business Assurance: The Quality Implications of Digital TransformationCognizant
To advance the digital business agenda, QA organizations must break loose from their traditional bug testing shackles and embrace frictionless, full lifecycle automation and a continuous delivery approach.
Using DevOps' Intelligent Insights to Deliver Greater Business ValueCognizant
By applying DevOps - with its real-time analytics - to the software development lifecycle, IT can deliver greater business value in velocity, quality and many other measures.
Have you tried to lean your IT Service Management? by Daniel BrestonInstitut Lean France
Workshop: IT going slow, reputation poor, service partners not delivering? Your budget is 30% Development and the rest keeping things running with a mix of internal and external IT teams. Your Service Desk does not add value as no one is paid to call them but you do get a lot of calls for help to fix or make a request. You are struggling to maintain compliance or introduce robust disaster continuity. Your PMO and Dev teams struggle to work with the Operations teams. Your SLAs are worthless.
Any of this sound familiar?
ITIL® or COBIT ® are the standard frameworks IT introduces but these seem to add burden and waste. What I did was lean my ITSM processes but first I leaned my IT people (within IT, partners and business stakeholders). A presentation by Daniel Breston at the Lean IT Summit 2015.

Read how Synoptek has proven to be an excellent partner for companies looking to streamline their IT infrastructure, efficiently manage operations globally and reduce operating costs.
The modern IT stack has become diverse and distributed, and it’s increasingly challenging to manage heterogeneous platforms and multi-vendor devices. Customers are looking to the cloud and APM to help address these hurdles, as well as accelerate IT transformation.
But migrating to the cloud will take time, it won’t make infrastructure ‘just disappear’, and legacy workloads are going to remain part of the enterprise reality for many. In addition, while APM will continue to be increasingly important, all applications are not the same and an application is still not equal to a digital business service.
Watch this webinar as John Worthington, a service management expert and Director of Product Marketing for eG Innovations, continues our Shift-Left series. You can learn:
• Why domain expertise is important when defining monitoring requirements
• What analytics are useful from a monitoring and observability context
• How end-to-end monitoring with converged application and infrastructure performance can drive ITSM and DevOps integration

Hurry Up and Wait! Leveraging Open Source to Fuel Sutter’s HIT Innovation Ple...Appnovation Technologies
Appnovation Accelerate Conference - November 18, 2015
Presenters: Kristen Wilson-Jones & Gil Flamino
Hurry up and Wait! Has anyone heard that before? The healthcare industry is an ever-evolving, dynamic and highly regulated one. The ability to respond to the new “new thing” along with balancing
to a longer-view strategy is critical. To make it more challenging, healthcare is highly fragmented and what appears to be a “healthcare system” is in reality 1000’s of small businesses. This presents barriers everywhere you turn: data, organizational, workflow, time, applications, etc. In this session we will discuss how Sutter R&D is approaching these challenges utilizing open source to build their HIT Innovation Plecosystem, coined Maestro. We will also be conducting a live build-an-app-on-the-fly
that demonstrates the promise of open source and how we’ve put into practice.

Open source web development shops can do amazing things for your company … if you let them. Traditional methods of sourcing outside talent, like the RFP, are outdated and do not serve either client or vendor well. Borrowing principles from agile development and design thinking, I have established a new model based on openness and collaboration ... and it’s working. If you are still using RFP to source outside web development talent, you are conceding an advantage to your competition that is employing newer methods. In this session you will come away with a roadmap for better relationships and projects with your vendors.

Drupal + HTML5 + CSS3 + JS = Rich Internet Application, an expression that bridges the gaps between content management and interactive UI, thus delivering, as a package to users, a Rich Internet Application experience. A fancy and responsive UI equals happy users; accessible and organized contents equal happy managers. Moreover, days where web applications only live on servers are gone, and most importantly, they can operate across multiple platforms: smartphones, tablets, and desktops. Running intertwined between online and offline mode becomes a possibility as well.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

In today's fast-changing business world, Companies that adapt and embrace new ideas often need help to keep up with the competition. However, fostering a culture of innovation takes much work. It takes vision, leadership and willingness to take risks in the right proportion. Sachin Dev Duggal, co-founder of Builder.ai, has perfected the art of this balance, creating a company culture where creativity and growth are nurtured at each stage.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

TRANSITION PLAN
22. Keeping our debt under control
1. Accountable Sponsors must communicate “why” a change is needed
2. Stakeholder’s involvement and alignment on changes is now mandatory
3. We make trade-off decisions explicit with ALL stakeholder buy-in
4. We highlight areas of complexity needing implementation clean-up
5. We govern solution changes against outcomes not just ‘make it work’
6. We now focus on business qualities not just the solution functions
(Agility, Flexibility, Interoperability, Maintainability, Performance, Reliability, Security, Usability etc.)
23. What to do next – take the first steps
1. Identify the business problem most being caused by weak IT
2. Get ‘Accountable’ business parties to draft key user scenarios
3. Discuss how a shift to outcome-driven thinking will improve your IT
4. Dry run calculating your technical debt scores based on qualities
5. Evolve your IT roadmap based on known system quality debt scores
6. Walk, talk & share your IT roadmap to gain stakeholder buy in
