The nymph replies that she would not live with or love the shepherd even if the world was young and truth existed. While spring and flowers are fleeting, the rest of nature complains of coming cares and winter. Fancy in spring leads to sorrow in fall, as gowns, shoes and flowers wither and are soon forgotten. Only if youth and love could last forever without age or need would the nymph consider living with and loving the shepherd.
