Menopause role of isoflavones by dr alka mukherjee nagpur m.s.indiaalka mukherjee
Soy-based isoflavones are modestly effective in relieving menopausal symptoms; supplements providing higher proportions of genistein or increased in S(-)-equol may provide more benefits. Soy food consumption is associated with lower risk of breast and endometrial cancer in observational studies. The efficacy of isoflavones on bone has not been proven, and the clinical picture of whether soy has cardiovascular benefits is still evolving. Preliminary findings on cognitive benefit from isoflavone therapy support a "critical window" hypothesis wherein younger postmenopausal women derive more than older women
Several areas for further research have been identified on soy and midlife women. More clinical studies are needed that compare outcomes among women whose intestinal bacteria have the ability to convert daidzein to equol (equol producers) with those that lack that ability (equol nonproducers) in order to determine if equol producers derive greater benefits from soy supplementation. Larger studies are needed in younger postmenopausal women, and more research is needed to understand the modes of use of soy isoflavone supplements in women. The interrelations of other dietary components on soy isoflavones consumed as a part of diet or by supplement on equol production also require further study, as do potential interactions with prescription and over-the-counter medications. And finally, greater standardization and documentation of clinical trial data of soy are needed.
Soy products can take several weeks or more to reach their maximal benefit. For example, a 2015 review found that soy isoflavones take more than 13 weeks to reach just half of their maximum effect. Traditional hormone therapy, on the other hand, takes about three weeks to show the same benefit.
It’s packed with nutrition
Soy is low in saturated fat and calories. It’s also high in these beneficial nutrients:
• fiber
• protein
• omega-3 fatty acids
• antioxidants
It may help to reduce your risk of heart disease
Eating tofu and other soy-based foods a few times a week can help you cut back on some animal-based protein sources, such as steak or hamburger, that are high in saturated fat and cholesterol.
A thorough look at intermittent fasting and calorie restriction as a benefit ...Dr. Courtney Holmberg, ND
Many health trends come and go, but one dietary trend that has seemed to endure the craze is intermittent fasting.
The primary reason intermittent fasting (IF) has remained so popular is because it offers flexibility to fit a busy schedule, and (while I don't typically advise mindlessly eat as long as your fasting) it doesn't ultimately demand restricted eating.

§ Islamic fasting is similar to Alternate Day Fasting (ADF), since the feast and fast periods of Islamic fasting lasts 12 hours in average.
§ Though Islamic fasting is associated with some adverse effects, there was no detrimental effects on health attributed directly to them, in health individuals. And the adverse effects of fasting could be minimized very easily by following the preventive measures.
§ The chronic patients with Diabetes, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Cancer, Ulcer, Urolithiasis, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), etc. should consult the healthcare professionals before observing Fasting.
§ Moreover, Islam exempts the Sick, Travelers and Pregnant, Breast Feeding and Menstruating women from fasting.
§ Islamic Fasting can be good for health if it's done correctly.
Nutritional Neuroscience: Thinking Twice about the Foods that Feed your Brain. Rachel V. Gow, PhD
This talk discusses the latest neuroscientific findings on the links between nutrition and mental health, well-being and performance. It provides evidence that specific nutrients are “brain-selective” and can act in comparable ways to pharmaceutical drugs. It also outlines the implications of the change in food production as a result of the agricultural revolution in favor of mass food production and how common nutritional insufficiencies may lead to physical and mental ill-health. The presentation discusses which foods may help optimise brain function with a focus on omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids.

Wheatgrass resembles a thin blade of grass. However, this thin blade of grass is a powerhouse of many nutrients. About an ounce of wheatgrass contains about 8 gm of protein and dietary fiber. It is rich in vitamin A, C, and many minerals like iron. It is the best organic vegetable with a very low content of calories.
There are many reasons for wanting to eat a healthy diet and healthy
foods. The long-familiar ones are weight loss and all around general
wellness, but the benefits to consuming healthy foods go beyond that.

This is a question that people generally don’t care about today because everyone has gotten into fancy diets and fancy rules and regulations which in future they are not able to keep up with. A major reason why common people get into these fancy diets is because of the trends on social media and getting inspired by celebrities. There is nothing wrong with following professional diets but if you are thinking that it is the only way to do so then you are wrong.

Lung Cancer: Artificial Intelligence, Synergetics, Complex System Analysis, S...Oleg Kshivets
RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

19. • Zinc:
• Zinc supplements reduce the severity and
duration of illness caused by the common
cold, according to a systematic review
published in The Cochrane Library. The
common cold places a heavy burden on
society, accounting for approximately 40% of
the time taken off work and millions of days of
school missed by children each year.
• The idea that zinc might be effective against
the common cold came from a study carried
out in 1984, which showed that zinc lozenges
could reduce how long symptoms lasted.
20. • Probiotic digestive supplements:
• Probiotics frequently are recommended as dietary supplements to
improve digestive health," said NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D.
"This is one of the first studies to describe precisely how they may work to
provide health benefits.
• The possibility that oral Bacillus might be an effective alternative to
antibiotic treatment for some conditions is scientifically intriguing and
definitely worthy of further exploration." Staphylococcus infections cause
tens of thousands of deaths worldwide each year.
• Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is familiar to many
people as a cause of serious disease. Probiotics seem to offer prevention
for this serious type of infection.
21. • Alpha-lipoic acid:
• Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that naturally occurs in the
body and in many foods. The supplement is approved in
Germany to treat nerve-related symptoms of diabetes; it is
thought to help prevent certain types of cell damage and is
also used by consumers to treat degenerative eye and
cardiovascular diseases.
• New research also indicates that this amazing supplement
can prevent kidney stone formation in a mouse model of
cystinuria, a rare inherited disease that causes the recurrent
formation of painful and damaging kidney stones.
•

• A team of researchers led by Bruce N. Ames, professor of molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley,
Stated, "we fed older rats these two chemicals normally found in the body's cells and are available as
dietary supplements: acetyl-L-carnitine, and, alpha-lipoic acid.
• In three articles in the February 19 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Ames
and his colleagues report the surprising results. Not only did the older rats do better on memory tests,
but they also had more pep, and the energy-producing organelles in their cells worked better.
• "With the two supplements together, these old rats got up and did the Macarena," said Ames, also
a researcher at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI). "Their brains looked better,
they were full of energy - everything we looked at looked more like a young animal."
