Nursing Informatics Part 2 Paper
Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperPart 2. In the Discussion for this module, you considered
the interaction of nurse informaticists with other specialists to ensure successful care. How
is that success determined? Patient outcomes and the fulfillment of care goals is one of the
major ways that healthcare success is measured. Measuring patient outcomes results in the
generation of data that can be used to improve results. Nursing informatics can have a
significant part in this process and can help to improve outcomes by improving processes,
identifying at-risk patients, and enhancing efficiency. To Prepare: • Review the concepts of
technology application as presented in the Resources. • Reflect on how emerging
technologies such as artificial intelligence may help fortify nursing informatics as a specialty
by leading to increased impact on patient outcomes or patient care efficiencies. The
Assignment: (4-5 pages) In a 4- to 5-page project proposal written to the leadership of your
healthcare organization, propose a nursing informatics project for your organization that
you advocate to improve patient outcomes or patient-care efficiency. Your project proposal
should include the following: • Describe the project you propose. • Identify the stakeholders
impacted by this project. • Explain the patient outcome(s) or patient-care efficiencies this
project is aimed at improving and explain how this improvement would occur. Be specific
and provide examples. • Identify the technologies required to implement this project and
explain why. • Identify the project team (by roles) and explain how you would incorporate
the nurse informaticist in the project team. Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperORDER A
PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREProposal of a Nursing Informatics Project for Improved
Patient OutcomesNurse informatics is an important part of today’s healthcare delivery
landscape. Because of that, the nurse informaticist has become a constant presence when
any matter involving patient data is discussed. This can range from capturing patient details
and treatment notes, to issues about interoperability between collaborating provider
systems. It is the nurse informaticist who is trained to be the custodian of patient
information stored in an electronic format in the healthcare organization’s electronic health
record (EHR) system. This paper is a narration of a proposal for the implementation of such
an EHR system in a healthcare organization that had not yet acquired one.Description of the
ProjectThis will be a project about the acquisition of a suitable EHR system from one of the
many vendors available in the market. This is a system that will replace the traditional
paper records that have been used in the medical profession since ancient times when
papyrus reeds were used as paper. The software of the system will be designed in such a
manner that the physician or clinician/ advanced practice registered nurse/ physician
assistant who sees the patient first can enter his or her notes, observations, and treatment
electronically into the system. These notes then become visible to the unit nurses where the
patient is admitted and the pharmacist. The system will also automatically send the
patient’s details to the housekeeping department and the catering department so that they
can prepare the patient’s accommodation and meals respectively. The nurses in the unit can
then use the patient’s details to order for any specific supplies from the pharmacy and
stores such as intravenous (i.v) lines, cannulae, infusions, and spirometer; just to mention a
few. In the pharmacy, the pharmacist can also refer to the clinician’s notes from their side
and dispense required medications. They can also use the same system to post queries to
the clinician concerning the patient’s treatment if they need clarification. This clarification
can be about dosages, duration of treatment, and drug interactions amongst others. This
way, there will be no need to physically move paper records and details of the patient from
one department to another. This quickens care and eliminates loss of paper records. Also,
misunderstandings and medical errors caused by poor clinician handwriting are avoided.
Nurses in the unit can clearly read what the clinician has typed, and the pharmacist can also
clearly understand what the clinician has written. The net result is that patient care will be
substantially improved, and hence the quality of care.Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperThe
Stakeholders Impacted by this ProjectThe stakeholders who will be impacted by this project
include the patients, the healthcare workers, the management, suppliers, visitors, creditors,
and the public at large (Wang et al., 2018). Patients will be impacted in that the healthcare
services that they will be receiving will be faster (timely), safer, and more reliable. This will
save them both time and money because their stay at the healthcare facility will not be
unnecessarily prolonged making them pay more for a situation that they have not caused.
Most importantly, the probability that they will be victims of medical and nursing errors
will have been greatly reduced by the improved efficiency brought about by the EHR.
Healthcare workers will be impacted in that their work will be made easier by the system.
They will be able to accomplish their tasks by simply using their keyboards and mouse. The
rest of the stakeholders will be impacted by the trickle-down effect of the efficiency brought
about by the EHR. For instance, creditors will receive prompt payment as the turnaround
time and patient turnover will increase through improved efficiency. A high patent turnover
means more revenue and greater cash flows. The Patient Outcomes and Efficiencies that this
Project Will ImproveThe Institute of Medicine (IOM) advanced six dimensions that define
quality healthcare. Any healthcare service delivered by any organization or institution must
meet these six dimensions to qualify as quality care. The significance of this is that
according to the Affordable Care Act 2010, reimbursement is currently done on a pay-for-
performance basis (James, 2012). The dimensions are safety, efficiency, effectiveness,
timeliness, patient-centeredness, and equitability (Beattie et al., 2013). Thus the patient
care outcomes that this project aims to improve include that (i) the patients will spend less
time waiting to be attended to as their details will be disseminated efficiently through
electronic means, (ii) there will be no more unnecessary readmissions as a result of errors
and mistakes committed by the healthcare team members as a result of lost paper notes and
misunderstandings caused by poor handwriting, and (iii) there will be reduced costs of
healthcare access because of the increased efficiency and the money saved will be beneficial
in meeting other healthcare needs. For the provider, the most important patient care
efficiency will be the prevention of medical and nursing errors caused by misunderstanding
among the healthcare workers. This efficiency occurs as all entries are predetermined and
the person entering patient details in the system only needs to select from pre-existing
drop-down menus and lists. This removes ambiguity since all the staff will be trained on the
system, its terminologies, and how to make the best out of it (McGonigle & Mastrian,
2017).Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperTechnologies Required Implementing this
ProjectThis EHR system will have its tailor-made functionality hinged on the software that
will be installed to run it. This is what will give it its uniqueness with regard to the
organization that will use it. At present, each organization uses its own unique system that
in most cases cannot interface with the system of another organization. The advantage of
this is security and privacy but the downside is lack of interoperability causing hitches in
referrals. The most important technology that will be required will therefore be computer
software technology. This will also include the operating system which will have to be user-
friendly to facilitate ease of use and adoption by the staff. The other technology that will be
used will be hardware technology. This is the platform on which the system will be
mounted. These will hold the software and enable its expression as well as facilitate the
input of data. The software technology is required because it is the actual system that will
be used, engineered to suit the specific needs of the healthcare organization. The hardware
technology will be needed because the software must have a platform on which to be
expressed. The last technology needed will be artificial intelligence technology. This is what
will enable the system to recognize errors, repetitions, unauthorized user access, and fraud.
This is needed for safety and security.ORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREThe Project
Team Members by RolesThe team members to this EHR project will include the project
manager who will make sure the project is completed within the allocated budget and the
set timeline. This person has to have a medical background and competency in informatics.
This is where the nurse informaticist is incorporated as she is the one who fits this
description. She will be the project manager for this EHR implementation project. The
others in the team will be (i) the application analyst who will piece together all the
suggestions and put them in a technical form, (ii) the application developer who will do the
actual design of the software and incorporate the individual needs of each department into
the design, and (iii) the quality assurance test engineer who will test the functionality of the
EHR system after its installation. He should also preferably have a clinical background to
make it easy for him to identify clinical flaws in the application (Vant, 2017). Nursing
Informatics Part 2 PaperConclusionA proposal for the implementation of an electronic
health record or EHR system is a noble one, considering that the world is currently virtually
run on digital platforms. The nurse informaticist is an important wheel in this EHR
implementation cog and must be involved from the start to the finish of the project. The
benefits in terms of efficiency and improved patient outcomes are
manifold.ReferencesBeattie, M., Shepherd, A., & Howieson, B. (2013). Do the Institute of

Nursing Informatics Part 2 Paper.docx

  • 1. Nursing Informatics Part 2 Paper Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperPart 2. In the Discussion for this module, you considered the interaction of nurse informaticists with other specialists to ensure successful care. How is that success determined? Patient outcomes and the fulfillment of care goals is one of the major ways that healthcare success is measured. Measuring patient outcomes results in the generation of data that can be used to improve results. Nursing informatics can have a significant part in this process and can help to improve outcomes by improving processes, identifying at-risk patients, and enhancing efficiency. To Prepare: • Review the concepts of technology application as presented in the Resources. • Reflect on how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence may help fortify nursing informatics as a specialty by leading to increased impact on patient outcomes or patient care efficiencies. The Assignment: (4-5 pages) In a 4- to 5-page project proposal written to the leadership of your healthcare organization, propose a nursing informatics project for your organization that you advocate to improve patient outcomes or patient-care efficiency. Your project proposal should include the following: • Describe the project you propose. • Identify the stakeholders impacted by this project. • Explain the patient outcome(s) or patient-care efficiencies this project is aimed at improving and explain how this improvement would occur. Be specific and provide examples. • Identify the technologies required to implement this project and explain why. • Identify the project team (by roles) and explain how you would incorporate the nurse informaticist in the project team. Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREProposal of a Nursing Informatics Project for Improved Patient OutcomesNurse informatics is an important part of today’s healthcare delivery landscape. Because of that, the nurse informaticist has become a constant presence when any matter involving patient data is discussed. This can range from capturing patient details and treatment notes, to issues about interoperability between collaborating provider systems. It is the nurse informaticist who is trained to be the custodian of patient information stored in an electronic format in the healthcare organization’s electronic health record (EHR) system. This paper is a narration of a proposal for the implementation of such an EHR system in a healthcare organization that had not yet acquired one.Description of the ProjectThis will be a project about the acquisition of a suitable EHR system from one of the many vendors available in the market. This is a system that will replace the traditional paper records that have been used in the medical profession since ancient times when papyrus reeds were used as paper. The software of the system will be designed in such a manner that the physician or clinician/ advanced practice registered nurse/ physician
  • 2. assistant who sees the patient first can enter his or her notes, observations, and treatment electronically into the system. These notes then become visible to the unit nurses where the patient is admitted and the pharmacist. The system will also automatically send the patient’s details to the housekeeping department and the catering department so that they can prepare the patient’s accommodation and meals respectively. The nurses in the unit can then use the patient’s details to order for any specific supplies from the pharmacy and stores such as intravenous (i.v) lines, cannulae, infusions, and spirometer; just to mention a few. In the pharmacy, the pharmacist can also refer to the clinician’s notes from their side and dispense required medications. They can also use the same system to post queries to the clinician concerning the patient’s treatment if they need clarification. This clarification can be about dosages, duration of treatment, and drug interactions amongst others. This way, there will be no need to physically move paper records and details of the patient from one department to another. This quickens care and eliminates loss of paper records. Also, misunderstandings and medical errors caused by poor clinician handwriting are avoided. Nurses in the unit can clearly read what the clinician has typed, and the pharmacist can also clearly understand what the clinician has written. The net result is that patient care will be substantially improved, and hence the quality of care.Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperThe Stakeholders Impacted by this ProjectThe stakeholders who will be impacted by this project include the patients, the healthcare workers, the management, suppliers, visitors, creditors, and the public at large (Wang et al., 2018). Patients will be impacted in that the healthcare services that they will be receiving will be faster (timely), safer, and more reliable. This will save them both time and money because their stay at the healthcare facility will not be unnecessarily prolonged making them pay more for a situation that they have not caused. Most importantly, the probability that they will be victims of medical and nursing errors will have been greatly reduced by the improved efficiency brought about by the EHR. Healthcare workers will be impacted in that their work will be made easier by the system. They will be able to accomplish their tasks by simply using their keyboards and mouse. The rest of the stakeholders will be impacted by the trickle-down effect of the efficiency brought about by the EHR. For instance, creditors will receive prompt payment as the turnaround time and patient turnover will increase through improved efficiency. A high patent turnover means more revenue and greater cash flows. The Patient Outcomes and Efficiencies that this Project Will ImproveThe Institute of Medicine (IOM) advanced six dimensions that define quality healthcare. Any healthcare service delivered by any organization or institution must meet these six dimensions to qualify as quality care. The significance of this is that according to the Affordable Care Act 2010, reimbursement is currently done on a pay-for- performance basis (James, 2012). The dimensions are safety, efficiency, effectiveness, timeliness, patient-centeredness, and equitability (Beattie et al., 2013). Thus the patient care outcomes that this project aims to improve include that (i) the patients will spend less time waiting to be attended to as their details will be disseminated efficiently through electronic means, (ii) there will be no more unnecessary readmissions as a result of errors and mistakes committed by the healthcare team members as a result of lost paper notes and misunderstandings caused by poor handwriting, and (iii) there will be reduced costs of healthcare access because of the increased efficiency and the money saved will be beneficial
  • 3. in meeting other healthcare needs. For the provider, the most important patient care efficiency will be the prevention of medical and nursing errors caused by misunderstanding among the healthcare workers. This efficiency occurs as all entries are predetermined and the person entering patient details in the system only needs to select from pre-existing drop-down menus and lists. This removes ambiguity since all the staff will be trained on the system, its terminologies, and how to make the best out of it (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017).Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperTechnologies Required Implementing this ProjectThis EHR system will have its tailor-made functionality hinged on the software that will be installed to run it. This is what will give it its uniqueness with regard to the organization that will use it. At present, each organization uses its own unique system that in most cases cannot interface with the system of another organization. The advantage of this is security and privacy but the downside is lack of interoperability causing hitches in referrals. The most important technology that will be required will therefore be computer software technology. This will also include the operating system which will have to be user- friendly to facilitate ease of use and adoption by the staff. The other technology that will be used will be hardware technology. This is the platform on which the system will be mounted. These will hold the software and enable its expression as well as facilitate the input of data. The software technology is required because it is the actual system that will be used, engineered to suit the specific needs of the healthcare organization. The hardware technology will be needed because the software must have a platform on which to be expressed. The last technology needed will be artificial intelligence technology. This is what will enable the system to recognize errors, repetitions, unauthorized user access, and fraud. This is needed for safety and security.ORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREThe Project Team Members by RolesThe team members to this EHR project will include the project manager who will make sure the project is completed within the allocated budget and the set timeline. This person has to have a medical background and competency in informatics. This is where the nurse informaticist is incorporated as she is the one who fits this description. She will be the project manager for this EHR implementation project. The others in the team will be (i) the application analyst who will piece together all the suggestions and put them in a technical form, (ii) the application developer who will do the actual design of the software and incorporate the individual needs of each department into the design, and (iii) the quality assurance test engineer who will test the functionality of the EHR system after its installation. He should also preferably have a clinical background to make it easy for him to identify clinical flaws in the application (Vant, 2017). Nursing Informatics Part 2 PaperConclusionA proposal for the implementation of an electronic health record or EHR system is a noble one, considering that the world is currently virtually run on digital platforms. The nurse informaticist is an important wheel in this EHR implementation cog and must be involved from the start to the finish of the project. The benefits in terms of efficiency and improved patient outcomes are manifold.ReferencesBeattie, M., Shepherd, A., & Howieson, B. (2013).
