As someone who feels constantly unhealthy, I closely follow popular diets in search of a healthier me. I have embarked several diets that left me feeling average at best. For four years I was a vegetarian, vegan for three months, paleo for two months and keto for two months. Each of these diets restricted me from the nutrients I needed, as well as added a layer of problems and complications. They also left me tired, and unable to process things later on when I ended each diet. When I decided to eat meat again after four years, I vividly recall many times where my life was consumed by hovering over a toilet after only a few bites of meat. It greatly impacted my social life, and my doctor warned me that these diets were dangerous to a young adult. After several blood tests, we found that these diets ended up giving more problems than benefits. They found that I was low in important nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, vitamins B12, D, became I became dangerously anemic (low in iron).
Topic Proposal:
My topic is focused on the short/long term effects fad diets and how the youth interprets diets displayed in popular media. Fad diets are diets popularized by the media that typically focus on the elimination of eating certain food groups to achieve weight-loss. However, this leads to a huge impact of nutrition given that restriction of entire food groups can erase one’s intake and even ability to process vital nutrients. The most common diets suggest limiting consumption of carbohydrates, fats or/and over-indulging in foods such as grapefruit. These diets, while promoting something considered positive, weight-loss, also can lead one into serious health problems.
Focus:
I am to focus on the common misconceptions on dieting and weight-loss. I want to uncover the great risks that come with the most popular dieting methods due to the restriction of vital nutrients as well as a solutions that nutritionists actually support. In hopes of finding a solution, I also want to take a look into positive diets promoted in the media, or if there is even a diet that is generally helpful and doable for the general public.

This is why the federal government has set up rules and regulations and governs to school lunches in the United States. The government introduces updated National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs (NSLP) in 2012 to cut down sugar, sodium and fat intake in the schools. The program included introduction of fruits, whole grains and vegetables every day. Statistics shows that nearly one third of children and adolescents in the country are obese and overweight. Poor nutrition in school lunches also increases chances of developing chronic diseases such as kidney stones, heart diseases and diabetes (Schuna, 2017). Healthy nutrition among children and adolescents enhances memory development, social skills and fine motor skills. Nutritionally sound diets in children and preadolescents plays very important roles in preparing them to (for) a healthier future. It is therefore the responsibility of the government to ensure school lunches are free of excess sugar, salt and fats.
There a strong relationship between nutrition and brain development. High intake of poor diet during the earlier years in children leads to anxiety and depression in later years. It also increases emotional and behavioral problems. However, healthy diets such as vegetables, whole grains and fruits prevent children’s risk to for depression in later years. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA, 2018), whole grains contains vitamins B, fiber and minerals that helps kids in school to concentrate in class. Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. The theme for this presentations name was inspiration and that is why I chose it, I want my topic to be inspirational, to get men to eat better, I also thought black was a masculine setting and appropriate for my topic! I would start off saying, hello my name is Summer Johnson, I would like to focus on how to influence the diets of those stubborn, thinking their diets are okay, college, specifically men.
Since some might be thiking this is a sexest topic, I have my reasons for it. First, this topic came to me when I started dating my first college boyfriend. I came from California to focus on studying Nutrition, and fate makes me fall in love with a boy that doesn’t eat anything nutritious. His diet consists of fried food, and any type of meat, or fast food, no vegetables, hardly any fruits, and is picky about cheese, and pastas. So what do I do? Besides fall into his bad eating habits, I strive to secretly use him as an experimental study. Along the process of study, I discovered that men are stubborn, maybe because thats how they were raised, or they think what their eating is just fine for them, or they simply want to only eat the foods they like. The other reason I chose to focus on men, is because there are a lot of studies on women and their diets because of mothering, weight concerns, and willingness to change to have a certain goal appearance.
Both sexes will have that stereotype effect on their diets, with concepts such as “real men eat meat, and women eat salad” just like on a first date the girl orders a salad, for what reason besides she wants to look healthy and not “fat” when she really wants ribs. There are social aspects that affect all food choices, and are highly influencing womens ideas on their body image, whereas men don't have as high as a demand in the food aspect of a body image, even though they might have a pressure to work out for an ideal body image. With a mans output of energy, yes its true they need more amounts of protein, which unless they are in the health motivated body image or schedule they assume meat is their only choice for protein, which of course is not true. Then the main point that differs men and women, thats assuming a women is looking out for her future, her childrens health and their influential facts, which their are a lot of studies on.
This study shows an importance to focus on mothers and how much fruits and vegetables they consume and for what reasons. The study had 6 groups, a total of 48 mothers, and first developed their perspectives, then developed positioning concepts for brand, with a concern on graphics and emotional stance. correcting the misconception that there are no additional benefits to consuming more fruits and vegetables. Which is a hard concept to get a cross, but with a safety, health, and variety of foods being the connecting points, the study was successfully targeting mothers to stop being pressured by junk foods availability and increase trustworthiness of produce instead. Now how do we transfer this information to a different study group of college males instead of mothers?
Yes, both male and females have these reasons to purchase on their mind, the small difference is their thoughts for those reasons. First, a college student's budget for food is not that high, so the more affordable a food is the better, most likely cheap not inexpensive. Reliability is to make sure it will keep them full, no one likes a hungry boy. Though some people think boys aren’t picky, that boys will eat anything. thats not true, most of them will not eat something they dont like the taste of, which I personally have concluded a majority is based off texture
This Chart is an actual study I have been Tallying between my boyfriend(boy) and I(girl). The foods I chose where two fruits he actually eats, apples and oranges, as well as vegetables since that is what I want him to be consuming more of, and every time I asked what did you eat today? any vegetables? the pauses for response would get longer with thought on if he actually ate any vegetables, which I am not including his answer of, “french fries, because they are potatoes, right?” Than since his diet is many consumed of meat, on average he would eat meat twice a day, as I would be eating meat about once every other day. I continued this tally for two months and putting it into a chart shows a dramatic result.
So how do we influence and healthier diet, when we don't have the point of watching out for their children's healthy and safety as a good enough bribe, as we would for women. The first attempt is to make healthy foods more convenient, which when competing with fast food and the availability of junk food, the challenge becomes even harder. The fact that convenience works is remarkable though, start with organizing the pantry and rerigerator, put the healthy stuff in the front and make them work for the “good” stuff in the back! Don’t make a big deal out of it” simply means, don't let him know you're trying, if he sees a way he can irritate you, he will. he doesn't want food to become a choir, make food fun again, its like having a child around. Dont repeat yourself or kill yourself trying to get a concept across, he doesnt want to hear it from you! relax and let pamphlets, pictures, magazines, advertisement say it all, which means look for what you like, want, or want to try and surround, yourself and him around those things, they will catch on and rub off on him, eventually.
Just like kids, food has been served to us and taught to us in so many different ways, so its the influences that shape what we eat and continue to eat in college when we are off on our own, I just wanted to show you what kids around the world were served for lunch to get a perspective on how different people eat around the world, because there are so many factors that go into our food choices today, besides our sex, religion and location. first we have France, point out the variety and color and two fruits and two vegetalbes. then italy, though it has more carbohydrates, there is still two fruits, and two vegetables. then comes Spain who keeps variety in color and smaller portions.. then the most shocking and disgusting, USA with all processed food, with little to no colors besides a monochromatic tan color. Which all things my malnutritioned boyfriend would still eat today. May be cost effective, and easy, but which one would you rather eat or wish you had grown up eating?
To put things in perspective there is a chart to include things that most people look at such as calories and total fat of the USA meal we saw on the previous screen. With all the information, and influences of behavioral eating, I believe there is a way to influence any one, gender, shape, size, ethnisity, or stubbornness to eat healhtier or atleast want to. Taking the first step is to want to take the first step.
