A 2004 survey showed that whiplash injuries have significant long-term effects for many victims, with 10% becoming totally disabled and 60% needing long-term treatment. Currently, treatment consists of only one weekly physiotherapy session and home exercise programs that can sometimes do more harm than good. The proposed whiplash rehabilitation device aims to address this issue by providing a low-cost portable device that patients can use at home in different positions and while doing other activities, encouraging regular exercise to aid recovery.
